We got caught in the rain today
and it ruined my new shoes,
but I didn’t care
because I saw your face
in the way that the leather crinkled.

The words “I love you” got caught in the raindrops,
dribbled down my face,
and were lost in the sewer.

I wish you would’ve known
the way your smile kept me warm
in the pouring rain.
I wish I could’ve told you
how your laugh sheltered me
from the cold.

I wish the raindrops could come out
of the sewer.
This was the last time I saw him.
