The Seesaw
Matt Gottlieb Oct 2015
There’s a seesaw that goes up and down,
It can take you to the moon, and also make you drown.
You try to hang on, stay up in the air,
But the seesaw has its rules, it doesn’t seem fair.

So you sit with your feet on the ground, praying for it to pass,
And just as you begin to lose hope, the seesaw moves at last.
And once again you are up in the air, flying higher and higher,
Believing He has finally listened, and delivered your heart’s desire.

And in your happiness you forget, you were never meant to fly,
That’s when the seesaw drops, pulling you down from the sky.
And as you lie on the ground, wishing for the days when you were flying high,
You look up to the heavens, one last time, before you say goodbye.

Love Kills
Matt Gottlieb Oct 2015
Love – The most wonderful thing in the world.
For the young and beautiful.
A cause for pain and misery for the rest of us.
But what do you do when you fall?
You didn’t know that love could be so painful. You didn’t know that it belonged only to them.
And she is one of them. And all the love in the world could not make her feel the same about you.
Because love belongs to the young and beautiful. And she is one of them. And you are not.

All That is Left
Matt Gottlieb Oct 2015
You ran and ran and ran, lied to yourself time and time again,
Until it happened, as you knew it would, turning all your dreams and lies into pain.

And he’s pretty and she’s lovely and they’re happy together,
While you’re sitting by yourself, writing poems and waiting to feel better.
It’s over now, you lost the love of your life, she lost a friend,
And you’re at a loss, wishing you were him and praying for the end.

And now there’s so much time, to lie awake at night and watch the days turn into years,
Going through the motions, imagining the worst, then getting struck by fear.
But that’s all that is left, endless thoughts and a void that no pal can heal,
Only a miracle, which only He can provide, but He is not even real.

The love of a parent, solid as a rock,
The light in the eyes of a child, engraved into memory,
The bond with a brother flesh and blood, unbreakable

The love of a parent, gone forever,
The light in the eyes of a lover, thrown away,
The bond with a friend closer than a brother, never been had

A life gone by unnoticed until turned upside down,
A sight gone by unappreciated until blurred by tears,
Company taken for granted until replaced by loneliness.

Life has given you its best shot, but something went wrong,
You were supposed to stay down, but are still going strong
Or maybe not, maybe you’re angry and in pain and you’re scarred forever,
The thing about hitting rock bottom though? It can only get better.

As She Is (You Love Her)
Matt Gottlieb Oct 2015
You Love Her

Even if she doesn't love you back
Even if she doesn't want you in her life
Even if she loves someone else

You Love Her

Not because you choose to love her
Not because you need to love someone
Not because you expect something in return

You Love Her

As she is
For who she is
Like you’ve never loved anyone before

It Will Never be You
Matt Gottlieb Oct 2015
She loves you? No, no no.
Not like you love her, not like she loves him,
This is a different kind of poem.

You lost your heart to her the moment you first saw her,
And for a minute there you thought she felt the same,
But you should’ve known better, happiness doesn’t last,
Now you’re done playing this game.

Still, you wonder, about those times you kissed,
All the texts and the calls,
If you can only find a reason,
Why it happened at all.

But there is no reason, to her you were just another dude,
So what if she’s the love of your life? Now you are totally *******.
She loves someone else, it will never be you,
You really thought you were handsome? You don’t have a clue!

And everyone will tell you, it’s not about the face,
Only empty people judge a book by its cover,
But they are lying to themselves,
That’s how they, too, choose their lover.

So now you wait, not for her, or a miracle,
Just for the pain to go away,
In a month, or a year, or never,
He doesn’t answer when you pray.

The Movie that Never Ends
Matt Gottlieb Jun 2016
It’s the same old movie, you’ve seen it a thousand times,
About a guy and a girl, and a love song that rhymes.
It used to be just a tale, something to do on a Friday night,
Then just like that it changed, and you began to see it in a whole new light.

All of a sudden it became your obsession, now you had to find out
How you too can join in on the fun, because that’s what your life is about.
Your family, your friends, even the mirror on the wall,
They all tried to warn you, get you to pick a different goal.

But you didn’t listen, you had to see it through,
You’re not like the rest of them, they don’t have a clue.
So you pressed the remote and knocked on the screen,
But the movie just kept playing, no one let you in!

It just got louder and louder, until you couldn’t take it anymore,
If only you could turn it off, or at least go back to before.
But they’re all still there, the guy and the girl and the song,
And all you can do is watch them, while waiting for sleep to come along.

Waiting
Matt Gottlieb Oct 2015
First you waited for her. To come back. To forget about that guy. To fall in love with you again
Then you waited for Him. To help you out. To create a miracle. To make the pain go away.
Then you waited for you. To stop caring. To feel nothing. To move on with your life.
Now you are done waiting. You feel the pain. Take a deep breath. And embrace who you are.
