My thanks to the store clerk working the midnight shift
God bless the dishwashers at local restaurants laboring for minuscule pay
To the forklift operators moving freight for hours on end ,
to cleaning crews preparing offices for another day
For the plumber protecting health in the wee hours of
the morn
For sanitation workers hard at work well before dawn

the hands of time will lift you up
higher than you've ever been
when they go back around
they might let you down again

the hands of time will let you live
while counting down your dying day
they are only meant to give
the time that they will take away

the hands of time will let you fall
six feet under coldest ground
they only answer to their call
to lift you up and bring you down
been pecking the pole since the forties

we think,

how delightful.

yet it must be changed and moved

in case it falls down, what would we

do then?  he asked.

i decided not to think about that, and

rejoice in the creosote

of the new thing.

may be the woodpecker will

too?

My secret life, my dark iniquity
Is best kept caged behind a gentle smile.
For though endowed with suave propinquity,
My heart lurks in the weeds, a crocodile.
NaPoWriMo day 24 - a "mix-n-match" poem.

Any similarities to any poet, living or dead, is hardly coincidental.  ;)
