  Jul 2014 Invocation
Edward Coles
I take a walk into the parkour graveyard,
looking for Polish dealers and cellphone halos.
I heard Thoth resides in sobriety,
but words fail me
whenever you are near.

I let my tongue run in endless stutters,
disguising 'I love you' as some off-hand request.
I could take you to dinner,
I could show you a longing
without the need for ***.

This late-night food has lost its flavour.
This ******* never picked up.
All that is left is to dial these numbers,
and wait by the window
for any car but yours.

Let's take a walk to the railway bridge.
We'll smoke a joint by the open forest.
You'll push your breath into mine,
make me high,
and forget why I ever
felt so low.

Song I love

I wrote a poem last week
I had to lie about street names
I didn't even check beforehand
To see if there is a "main st." here
Call the cops, I don't care
i lied about writing that poem last week. i wrote it months ago.
once again, call the cops, i don't care.

Prep me for surgery.
I don’t know what’s happening.
This is an emergency.
A medical mystery.
Here’s my consent in writing.
My heart is gone, picked up and left.
Find me a new one.
Then sew it in my chest.

I am the Tin Man.
Colored hearts on my sleeve.
Drinking from an oil can.
Empty as can be.
With a map of misguided direction.
And the burning of my isolation.
I am the Tin Man.
Broken like you see.

I no longer have the heart to love.
Of course you refused and denied.
Wanting the things I couldn’t give.
You kicked me to the curbside.
How sad it must be.
Being the name no one will miss.
But I’ll mark you down on my list.
Even if it hurts to reminisce.

My joints are rusted through.
The hinges scream and grind.
Damage was all we really knew.
Tearing through body and mind.
The things that were stolen.
We now must replace.
At the bottom of the stairs.
And in the lines we erased.

Put me back together.
Give me back my skin.
I’d rather die from a broken heart.
Than live as a piece of tin.
Send a pulse to the vein.
Tune the drum at my core.
I am not an empty frame.
The Tin Man is no more.
This is the rest of Tin Man. In light of recent events it seemed fitting to post the rest of what I wrote years ago.

In the spring
I saw you liked a pretty girl
with a pretty smile
a pretty laugh
and a great body

So over the summer I made myself pretty too
changed my hair
changed my makeup
and ate healthy

When I came back to school in the fall
I got double takes from boys
and jealous eyes from girls
but not a single look came from you.

I think I've washed away and all that's left of me is residue
A slippery silver lining
Of what my sadness felt like between your toes
Crunching under your steps

There are 5 steps to recovery
Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in
Don't breathe anymore
All the stepping has stopped

And it's quiet on the ocean
The waves aren't crashing into the stars
The stars aren't bleeding into each other
Not as long as the winds don't move

There's a film on tips of wave tops
Thin and disappearing
All that's left is residue
