The Bargain

The Bargain

I met darkness in a quiet place
It sought to bless me with its grace

With a voice so low so sweet and small
I was almost tempted when it called

It offered wealth beyond compare
My every wish if I should dare

To take a chance and perhaps stay
But lose myself along the way

Stifling power with mindless rage
My foes before me crushed and slain

A vengeful promise mine to keep
To let darkness reign all while I sleep

But at what cost I failed to ask
What devil hid in that dark mask?

The reward for vengeance wealth and fame
A soul surrendered …no one to blame

I met  darkness in a quiet place
It sought to trick me with its grace

With a voice so low so sweet and small
I felt temptation when it called

Lie

Lie
Lie to me. Whisper untruths in the darkness, and spin the tallest of tales when the veracity would serve just as well.

Lie to me. Keep me as far away from certainty as day is from the night and as love is from disinterest.

Lie to me with silence, mystery and the  inconvenience of absence where truthful glances may find sanctuary.

Lie to me, that my heart may remain unbroken and your conscience unsullied for as long as fantasy remains a potent salve for life's bothers

Lie to me until lies are the only truths I can digest and reality is a world where I can no longer dwell.

Lie to me until those threadbare contrivances will no longer contain the light and my foolishness is revealed.

Lie to me until I believe and joy once more finds fertile soil in my being

Lie to me until  the truth is all I hope for,  all I will hear and all I will accept.

Why I Write
Ron Armstead Feb 2021
Words can inspire and encourage. They can enlighten and reveal. In the proper order they can move us to tears of quiet joy or unlock the mournful sorrow that sometimes burdens our spirits. In times of weakness they can give us strength, in times of arrogance they can show us our weaknesses. The right words can remind of of loves lost, love found and all the love that remains.I pray these words will reach your heart, open new pathways in your mind and free your spirit to find its way.
