“ The Other Side of Town “

Is the sunrise just as striking
does the snow come floating down
does the wind blow through the treetops
on the other side of town

Do the leaves turn orange in autumn
do the blackbirds make that sound
is the sunset just like magic
on the other side of town

Do the old men still play checkers
does the ice cream truck come ‘round
do the kids still walk ‘round barefoot
on the other side of town

And
though I’ve never caught the train
that takes you ‘cross the tracks
I’ve often said that if I go
  I’m never comin’ back
I’ll sell the memories I’ve earned
  I’ll take the mailbox down
I’ll find a place to lay my head
on the other side of town

Do they sit out on their porches
do they wave when you come down
can you walk downtown at midnight
on the other side of town

Can you take your *******
  moonlight walks
do you hear those baying hounds
do the crickets tell the stories
from the other side of town

Am I
  just a fool for dreamin’
I can turn the clock around
Can I find what I still long for
on the other side of town

And
though I never caught the train
that takes you ‘cross the tracks
I’ve often said that if I go
  I’m never comin’ back

I’ll sell the memories I’ve earned
  I’ll take the mailbox down
I’ll find some peace beside the trees
on the other side of town

  I’ll find that dream
   inside my heart
on the other side of town
And I know
a boy
with brown hair
and sad eyes
whose heart
was so heavy
and his speech
full of lies
he said he was
happy, but how
could that be?
When honestly,
he was only
just as "happy"
as me.

I know I haven’t been the best daughter
Running from the high water
Dancing when it’s hell
Letting you burn as well

We’re just issues with addictions
Putting aside our convictions
Sitting under bare trees in autumn
As we both hit rock bottom

At least is was something steady
Standing in the mirror getting ready
Laughing in car with spare change in the ashtray
Sitting a cafe sipping a single decaf latte

The problem was that every second was fake
A figment of my imagination created to stop the ache
I knew I could never please you
I guess I wasn’t that see through
You couldn’t tell I needed someone to turn to
But you couldn’t help anyways, not the way that words do.

Everything has changed
You are my every thought
My reason
My Whole World.

I didn't realize
How close we would be
But you are
My Whole World.

You are the most beautiful
The smartest
The most kind
My Whole World.
I love you
It doesn’t matter
who others want you to be
We love you
for your beautiful smile
for your happiest laugh
for your most endearing quirks

It doesn’t matter
what box you were put in.
We love you
for the joy you impart
for the comfort you give
for the caring you receive

It doesn’t matter to us
what’s between your legs
We love you
for how you think
for how you touch our lives
for how you change the world

All that matters
is that you be yourself
Your place can be found
only by looking in your heart
