We are
two lonely stars
shrouded in the veil
of obstinate distance
glancing at each other
every so often

Together yet far apart

Sometimes I wonder
how long would it be
before we break and fall
into the abyss of oblivion
never to see each other
alight once again
I was the Goddess and you were a mortal
yet I was the one who followed you
like a supplicant

night after night
I left my bedchamber
& the demiGod in deep slumber on my bed

swathed in the shrouds of darkness
I kept coming to worship you
quotidianly

but it wasn't enough
for you were never satiated
even after reaping all that I possessed

and trying to make an immortal out of you
is now obliterating the light
within my heart's eyes

thence go back to your realm
you can't dwell in mine no longer
& my knees can't kiss the hassock anymore
I see a stone a leaf and a door. I knock.
It opens and I float into clouds that make
me step gently. I want to kiss everyone I
have ever known. Yoko lives for my sake
in my mind beckoning. I go to her and die
inside her womb hear ticking of her clock.
The statues are eyeless in Iveagh,
ruins under leafed eaves,

effaced, pitted, blotted,
benighted green and wet:

they have heard far more love
than mine and hers, witnessed

others filled with beer, wine,
& whiskey. Forbidden fruit

rots on the branch. Magpies gather
by blue knees, curious and hopeful.

Crimes of the heart were committed
on that night. The sound of the river

sinewed through the cracked window.
The past was father of the present,

the sheets were stained sails.
Coffee was brewing in the evening,

corks rolled into corners,
whiskey emptied the memory.

Now it's years, years later:
I just walked on water,

the river would not collapse beneath me.
A friend sent me neon letters,

rain is due tomorrow,
and the kittens are restless.

I open a bottle. My lovely neighbor
is building a mirror before dinner,

she borrows a screwdriver.
I am guilty of everything you said.

I am guilty: but there is no jury
who would ever convict.
and so I search
again
it is still there
fading
unnoticed
into the otherwise glowing abyss
this incredibly beautiful
incredibly lonely universe
this dying star
from eons past
a silent twinkle of light
if we happen to be looking
but the cries go unheard
