Dad spoke of his father today.
I listened with Friday
Beer breath and keen
Ears, as he said:

I hope to God your brother
And you won't remember
Me as a ****
Fool when I'm gone,

Then coughed that gurgle-rasp
That promises significant
Changes in a son's
Life within

Not too distant a
Future.
Those **** cigarettes.
Half a lung gone, surgery

Scar a part of that back
That I remember I thought
Would carry me
Forever.

We never spoke too emotionally.
He does it more and
More, and all I can do is
Prepare,

And to speak such truths as:
Dad. You've impressed our
Friends, charmed our women,
Driven us through snow storms

And late nights
To get us to -or home from- either.
Fed us, chopped wood through
Summers to keep us warm through

Winters.
Taught us languages and carpentry,
History and poetry,
Classical wrestling and chivalry.

You've made us laugh since
Before we knew how to.
I think of you whenever I smell
Sawdust, new guitar strings, and smoke

(Only minutes old, his cough
Was the first sound I reacted to...)
Your memory is safe.
Whenever your time comes

To leave us to the strength of our
Own arms and souls,
Trust that your rest is well earned.

He laughed a little,

Eyes wet from coughing
And whatever.
I could die content tomorrow,
Having told him.

Some giants don't fall.
They just lie down.
Not to wither away and die.
But to retire,

The way oak trees,
Mountains, revolutionary ideas
And gods
Retire.

Rings made of copper and gold run circles around your eyes as if beauty actually is in the eye of the beholder but truth is, all parts of you have the same splendour.
- You're tired like watery flames and you're the water to a thirsty fire but you never extinguish anyone out; you love and love and love so they build and build and build for the brighter shine of a galaxy in its turn
- Gliding around broken ice you never made the shards smaller and sharper but got your paintbrushes and smoothly stroked the glittering colour back into the fading atmosphere, did you use acrylics or oils?
- You are white construction in its best light and everyone wants to hold the bricks that you put next to gleaming cement for those who need help climbing, even if you’re scared of heights (but you’re not scared of falling)

Smiles that drip with gold sadness and
Run from estranged places go hand in hand with
Blue perspectives and unheard words,
But I’d escape to anywhere with you
By my side if it meant
Danger and orange sunsets
Stale coated eyes and huge skies
Because you taught me that happiness
Is not viable if its not laconic
And the fewest of beating clocks were
Enough to last both a night and 7
Dollars in mere coins

Sometimes while looking in the mirror, I think to myself
I'm okay being me
I look alright
I am alright
And this is all I need
(It's not all that I want)
(but this is all that I need)
You deserve to be happy (I hope you do whatever it is that will make you happy)

wait until your eyes hurt
you keep running your tongue over your teeth
you think 'everything is fine, or at least it will be'
and even though you still daydream
no one wants to hear about it, molly.
daydream to yourself-
go talk with someone else
(she closed the door between us and smiled at her dog,
I was mid-sentence, but I stopped)

the last blue summer i dripped
               sulfur from a bottom lip
               you found an eyelash
                in your cheerios
and we danced
all winter
                into the next blue summer
then it was rhubarb and honey
The First Man came to stab
           his tongue in my mouth
             i,
the very silk sheet of femininity
let him puncture inside with the chewed
            embittered nails
this is a girl in holy conversion
she convulses at the right times
           for dramatic effect
the blood on the bed is as christ
                      a symbol of sacrifice
         back when men played gods
and i let them

The Second Men
            are numerous skin lesions
diseases from stepping in the wrong
                 swamplands
         they smell always of
            peppercorn or gin&tonic;
their ***** sense a tenderness inside
like dogs they sniff it out
to bury it with the one large hand
that wraps around the throat every
       time
       that same ******* line
you like it rough you little **** like it rough
i am on my back on the bed
that rocks from him ******* into
           my girlhood
i think of what my mother said when she found
the box of condoms i keep with me
"i would just hope these men care about you."
she doesn't understand
these delicate men look for women to care
           about them
in the lily morning
          they want to get breakfast
                             text me their problems
i'm the man on the sidewalk
curling my lips into each other at their texts
"what are you doing tonight?"
"hey haven't heard from you for a while"
   "hi :)"

I am on my back in bed
wondering if I can hail a cab from delancey St
while he licks and ***** at my **** and I feel nothing
               but I play the parts
I know my lines
and the Second Men could have done well in the spotlight
only they wanted a girl and by then I was decidely
       not human

The Men
                     can smell it
                      when you've been taken before
a goodbye kiss on the cheek i grant
             in a moment of kindness
and it becomes his tongue in my mouth
i am paralyzed in honesty
in the remaining threads of the docile sweetness
mom says it is feminine to be kind
that it is not a weakness
I think of this again when I am on all fours
hair pulled back by his hands
I think of it when the door closes and the other he
wouldn't take no for an answer
how many times did I tell myself
I wanted this?
                              every time

The Dream Men
                   take me in my bed
in the house with grapevines and white shutters
they stuff their hands down my throat
they **** me from all sides
I spend the dream trying to scream
and when I wake it is always sunny outside so I never feel
                 good about crying

Moms at the foot of my sadness
                              brush my hair braid it
we are in flower fields with magnets
             painted lilac and baby pink
im stomping around in the garden they hush me
              quiet
we are born into these love traps
                     these delicate sentiments
tricked to think we are heiress to sloppy emotion
but the women ring the rags
pluck the tomatos off the plants
the men see ghosts and weep
                          into their coffee
weep on the shoulders of their women
who lie on their backs in bed
wait for it to be over

It hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts
I don't like it I don't like this
Did you come? Yes I came
Yes it's all taken care of
Is that blood? Are you okay?
Sorry I forgot I'm on the last day
You sure? Yeah It was great
I want to go again
Ok Baby

The Women
                 taste different
                   feel safer
their histories and mine are reflective
they know what it means to be taken
         but their hands
                       do not hurt enough
                        don't leave behind blisters
i begin to come into someone else
                 never satisfied enough
                  to settle
                  to build a home

Men and their history of abusing women
Me and my history of being abused
We'll never understand each other
We'll never love each other either

The Men have taken
                everything from my Women
                my Grandmother barren
my Mother so close to death
I was born into the locked
             door
The history of Women who stayed
                   tender and delicate

it’s interesting to think about all the right people who might’ve come into your life at the wrong time.
but then again,
i often wonder if time could’ve saved or wrecked us at all.
maybe from the start, we were destined to be nothing more than strangers.
even if i had been weighed down, glued to one spot,
nomadic tensions silenced,
it seems likely that, still, our friendly smiles and cordial jokes would’ve been
limited, somehow,
by unseen barriers,
by the cruel overseer that is fate.

i think i meant something to you, once.
not a lot, but something.
and now,
now i’m just there.
a solid. something that takes up space.
you still sit close to me,
but not as close as you did when we first met.

and i wonder, sometimes, if i did something wrong,
if there was something i could’ve done, or not done, to change things,
to make things better,
to stop us from drifting silently onto the end of the growing list of tragedies my life’s friendships have been.

but maybe there was nothing i could do.
that thought, while terrifying, is perhaps the most comforting one.
after all, it is better to be left helpless from the start than to be burdened with the knowledge that the stones you threw became part of the landslide.

i hope, maybe, that we can salvage what’s left,
perhaps even grow it into something better.
but somewhere inside, i know that’s fool’s talk.
i doubt i ever meant much to you, anyway.
i always was, and always will be, just another shadow,
another stranger,
another change of season.
i suppose i was your winter —
a barrage of snow and ice that danced in clumsily,
not bothering to think about what would happen once spring came.

i hope you’ll remember me when i’m gone.
even now, it’s nice to think that i cross your mind as much as you cross mine.
but my hopes seldom match my reality.

so, still, i am just another.
watching.
waiting.
being.
i am nothing, and in being nothing i suppose that i, too, am everything.

but i will never be your everything.

and i could say that i regret that,
but perhaps i’m still holding onto that last bit of hope.

always the optimist,
and yet even more so the pessimist.

i thought you might be both, too.
i thought we might find a way to complete one another,
much like how the land completes the sea.

but i suppose i am left the earth without its ocean,
the ground without its rain.

it’s a horrible thing, detachment.
my roots never quite find what they’re looking for in the soil.

i had just hoped you would be different.
