In the evening I like to walk
through the streets, looking
at the people in their houses
and then I wonder who
I would like to swap with

and what kind of swap that would be
What do I give and what do I get?
A soul for a soul, maybe
not to keep forever
but, who would want mine

with all its consequences?
Of course I don't get an answer
A bird on a street-lamp
is looking at me, it's night
so it doesn't sing

whether it's free or captive
it doesn't sing, because it's night
But we're not alone now
and I'd like to swap with it
Yes, I did

I knew this couple once. Larry and May. They were quite normal. Nothing unique. Then one day, they did something mad. I don't know if it was spontaneous or what. They met up with another couple. Lisa and Don.
I'm not sure if anything ***** went on. Maybe it did. What happened after that was of note. The ordinary couple ceased being that. They swapped partners! Not in bed. No, in real life.
They made two new couples. Larry and Lisa and May and Don! Was it a joke or drunken prank? Whatever it was, it was forever now. They all moved into the same house.
And they planned a double wedding. I want an invite. What would the neighbours say? Curtains everywhere would be twitching.

Take my light,
I don't want it without you.
Leave me without hope,
carry it into the blue.
Tie down your future
with the penny I'll throw.
Teach me how to play dead,
and I will let you go.

Put me in your shoes,
and tell me something is missing.
Tell me, from now on,
my life is simply existing.
Take my smile and my eyes
and I will take on yours.
I will resent you for your joy,
but never tell, of course.

I'll let you leave,
I'll stop obsessing,
If you do this for me.
All I ask is that you strip me of my optimism,
and leave me simply to be.

And you'll walk away with purpose.
Walk with hope of something.
Live in the light of promise.
And I will aspire to nothing.
I don't care if it's not a fair trade.
