Fashion and beauty retailers from across Hull are uniting to celebrate the region's independent shops.

The sixth annual Hull Business Improvement District (BID) Fashion Week is in full swing, with more than 70 retailers taking part. During the festival, business owners will showcase their best products and offer prospective shopkeepers an insight into how they have made their companies successful. Organiser Adam Clark said the celebration offered a platform for Hull's retail sector to demonstrate its strengths.
He said: "Hull Fashion Week celebrates and promotes independent retailers in Hull city centre.

"They are one of the driving forces to what makes our retail offer unique, along with our three city centre shopping centres and department stores."
Gillian Long opened her bespoke tailoring service, **** Of The Walk, in Hull two years ago.

The Savile Row-trained tailor will be opening up her studio to give prospective customers and fellow retailers a look behind the scenes.

She said: "I enjoyed Hull Fashion Week last year, but I did think there weren't that many men's fashion retailers or designers taking part, so I wanted to get more involved to show people what is out there.

"I think the event is a great thing to raise awareness about all the different independent shops out there.

"People might not realise we are here, but if you scratch under the service you will see there are actually lots of us who are doing really well."

Family-run jewellery firm Hugh Rice is another Hull company getting involved, with a meeting at its branch in St Stephen's shopping centre today.

Sales and marketing director James Rice said it would give fellow shopkeepers a chance to learn about the latest jewellery trends and let customers try on the latest pieces.

He said: "For us, it's just great to be involved in an event on this scale.

"We are a Hull company and we want to be as involved as possible in events like this, which promote the city and promote Hull businesses."
Mr Rice said it was an exciting time to be a city centre retailer in Hull.

"Around the marina in particular, there are lots of young, trendy shops emerging in an area that has probably been a bit neglected in the past year or so," he said.

"As we move towards the UK City of Culture in 2017, it's great to see more businesses thriving and I think it has given the rest of us something to aim for."

The week will culminate with a grand finale on Saturday, hosted by BBC Look North weather presenter Keeley Donovan.

Up the gods rock,
To the top of the island
I climb – a lucky guest.
I’m crowned in laurel

And bigger than the sea.
Round and round
The sparkly heavens shove me;
The pitch black

Catches me.
I’m a microbe, a quasar;
A pillow, a kife!
I’m ready, I’m hazy

Your nightmare, your prize.
Have I yet the courage
For the dive –
The big dip.

I’m still green and weary
I shall dry up or slip,
Into death
and oblivion and dread.

Newton is dead.
Why are we still clinging to a flat Earth?
Observe the atoms,
Ride the waves.

It is me I see
In every crook and corner.
It is me who sees,
It is me I see.

I am your Frankenstein
You mighty organiser
You puzzle maker
You forgot to flip the light switch in my eyes.

You stuck me, colourful
to a monochromatic Earth.
Unrelentingly chasing
Hidden meanings,

Fireflies.

I  did no wrong
I was just an honest jobbing man like millions of others
but in senseless red mist
screaming ' The Trial. the trial' they came for me
Kafka turned in his grave
its Clockwork Orange time
Pray! what was my crime
I was the wrong colour and I dared to aspire
and I had absolutely nothing in common
with **** Bobby
who under the guise of being a Youth Organiser
of the local Socialist Movement
was organising his **** in fifteen year old girls
and making movements before moving on to another
Bobby called me a yuppie and hated my guts with a passion
I am everything he could never be and my tan made it worse
Eirst I was burgled
Then
“Somebody must have slandered Joseph K.,
for one morning, without having done anything wrong,
he was arrested.”
The Trial.... had begun
They said Robin Hood was in Town.....

P erfect for this group, and its artistic take

A lso to Tara, a special thank you
O riginator, and organiser, of this group so true
P romoting this wonderful project, woo hoo!

So get out your pencils, and get out your pens
Put on your dancing shoes, start singing again
And paint, and brushes, and paper, and all
When done, you'll find, you can again, start to walk tall

As tall as a chimney, as tall as a house
As tall, as a mountain, or a very tall mouse!

Thought i'd throw in some nonsense rhyme!)

They were those post 2nd WW Estates
Blocks of flats now with sealed coal chutes by the front doors
we were on the third floor. the last flat to the right
A large quadrangle of grass laid at the back of our block
we would walk down with the dogs and watch them run and play
They seem to love each-other as much as they love us
happy times, happy days
sometimes we let them out on their own, its like letting them out
on the back garden
they knew their way home, for twenty minutes later you hear them
back at the door to be let in, wagging their tails, running to their
water bowl, then jumping on you like to say, we had fun

The Mrs opened the door and let out a quiet scream
I heard the door shut and she run into the sitting room
I was half-way up, the broadsheet I was reading falling off me
she had a look on her face, one I'd not seen before
outside I heard the Tara and Dorwan barking
" oh no, oh no " she said now tears were falling from her eyes
darling, whats wrong, what's the matter, I said, alarmed
now hold her
"oh no, oh how dreadful, how so ****** dreadful, someone
has smear **** all over the dogs, why, why, they are lovely friendly dogs"
I was aghast, then incensed, then aghast, then calm
Its OK darling, I got the Dog Shampoo and a large bucket of warm
water, its alright, please stop crying
I'll take them back downstairs and clean them out.

******* left outside our door, racist litter strewn on the landing
our car scratched, car wheels let down, banging at night
Stormy clouds had started looming
Bobby the Socialist youths Organiser and pals
were no longer hanging by the landing or stair well
but something heavy and dark hung in the air
War had began, but we did not know
We do not fight wars..........
The war had begun
