" Please, Highest-Ranking Lord of Lords we do beg of You, don't You shove
our beloved opera singer into the cold, cold ground, ****** "....

...And, the ancient, blue moon that mystically lives high above the bar is slightly less intoxicated
than ourselves, but, we will not turn off the lights,
until it gets light again, or maybe not at all,
because such an artificial light
in our o, so befuddled eyes has something
quite beautiful about it we think,
especially if you are close friends who're a bit totally drunk
as an almost comic or- believe it or not-  a completely absurd duo of displaced persons like you and I,
or as a collection of very old, dusty barrel organs even,
that turn out to be way more toneless than
the almost dead opera singer at the end of the bar,
who was so called apprenticed to none other than
the great Caruso himself, although we still do realize that an unrealistic amount of vile lies can be sown everywhere in this country
(even by us, drinkers)

And, coincidence or not, the music
in our favorite local bar comes out of
an old scratchy vinyl record by the very same Caruso,
as it would drive out any culture barbarian,
just like we ourselves are eager to chase out
all of those witnesses of Jeovah with a big broom whenever they show up at our front doors,
although, we may be dumb
but not barbarians of culture, because listen,
that Caruso, well, that man, he does de facto sing better than a caged nightingale, when you hear him spread
his colorful wings in every note, in all those well- formed octaves,
in every masterfully perfomed song even,
although, his opera art can sometimes make us
so sleep drunk and that might be a nice feeling at times, but, it is at the same time one of those cliches
that you shouldn't try at home, kids!

Leave that to mature lordships like ourselves,
whom you tend to call scornfully, old men,
and, meanwhile please, let us have our love for music, and, if you would be so good, don't make
those painful jokes about our heartfelt weakness
for good old opera tunes...

Yes, we are the ones who truly do believe Caruso
was here....and if you don't believe this true story
then, come back tomorrow same time
when we'll be a little sober again
as well as ready to tell you a next white lie
as that's at least what you disrespectful people
from Mars think about it,
but, I say, just you read our drunken lips :

"******, to hell, because you are all a bunch
of ******* liars", as our beloved Caruso
is still alive ( and, we just bought him
a very special Italian beer) after which he probably will start singing vividly
as a classy and uttermost captivating nightingale......because the alleged, so called apprentice of the Master in our local bar
turned out to be none other than
the divine (Grand)Master Caruso himself...

Led down from the tower
Head high and hands bound
Blindfold declined against the wall
Black square pinned to his heart
Eyes afire and shining proud
He sang...

He sang of Caruso, Townes Van Zandt
Pavarotti, Bocelli, Mercury,
Carreras, he sang of Antoine,
Of Sinatra, Lennon, Morrison, Redding
He sang and songbirds paused in flight
He sang like them all

He sang a song of himself
Of leaves of grass, of second comings
Of Byron, and Bharti, and Cummings
He sang of Neruda, and Plath, Tagore
Dickinson, Kamala Das and Naidu
Oh, he sang of them all

He sang of art and beauty
Of Mona Lisa and starry nights
Girls in green dresses and pearls
He sang of Van Gogh, of Picasso
Of Rembrandt, da Vinci
He sang of Michelangelo

He sang of sadness, pain
He sang of My Lai, Sand Creek
Of Guernica and Krystallnacht
He cried and sang of Wounded Knee
Of Katyn Forest, Sabra and Shatila
Oh, he wept as he sang

He sang of history and wonders
He sang of Olduvai and pyramids
Machu Picchu, Tikal, and Angkor Wat
He sang of a great wall, the Taj Mahal
Stonehenge, Easter Isle, Mesa Verde
His song took us to them all

He sang of courage
A song of Bunker Hill, Gettysburg
Of the Alamo, Normandy, Stalingrad
Of Lincoln, Guevara and Dr. King
He sang of Bolivar, Bhutto, Ghandi
He shamed us with their song

He sang his song...
As women sighed and peasants cried
He  sang until the rifles fired, he died
Songbirds fell from the sky
Soldiers broke their guns on stones
And marched into the deep blue sea.

"M'APPARI TUTT' AMOR..."

Here in the church
of my father's carpentry

the incense is
of pine

sunlight genuflects
through the window

wood curls
in religious ecstasy

a blue bottle
preaches an  iridescent  sermon

a choir of dust motes
make this a heaven

as my father hums
"M'appari tutt' amor.."

this my epiphany
of the ordinary

this the everyday
prayer

I bow my head to
the saw as it sings

"....bella si che il mio cor ..."

*

"M'APPARI TUTT' AMOR..."Lionel's aria from from Flotow's Martha

You can see this sung as a charming serenade in the film BREAKING AWAY ! and in the soapuds episode from ***** WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and used here and there in Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW.

There are also two swing versions.

My Da didn't know any of this and it was just a passing air on the radio that got stuck in his head and he would hum or la la la it every now and then as he hammered or sawed without knowing anything about it! It was only years later when he was 90 that I was able to tell him what it was and get him a recording of Domingo singing it.

Of course it features highly in a certain Mr. Joyce book as well. Caruso had made it popular and Joyce always a big Caruso fan( he had hoped to do an interview with the great man when he came to Dublin but that came to nothing.)

‘Singing. Waiting she sang. I turned her music. Full voice of perfume of what perfume does your lilactrees. ***** I saw, both full, throat warbling. First I saw. She thanked me. Why did she me? Fate. Spanishy eyes. Under a peartree alone patio this hour in old Madrid one side in shadow Delores shedolores. At me. Luring. Ah, alluring.

—Martha! Ah, Martha!
Quitting all languor Lionel cried in grief, in cry of passion dominant to love to return with deepening yet with rising chords of harmony. In cry of lionel loneliness that she should know, must martha feel. For only her he waited. Where? Here there try there here all try where. Somewhere.
—Co-ome, thous lost one!
Co-ome, thou dear one!
Alone. One love. One hope. One comfort me. Martha, chestnote, return!
—Come …!
It soared, a bird, it held its flight, a swift pure cry, soar silver orb it leaped serene, speeding, sustained, to come, don’t spin it out too long long breath he breath long life, soaring high, high resplendent, aflame, crowned high in the effulgence symbolistic, high, of the etherial *****, high, of the high vast irradiation everywhere all soaring all around about the all, the endlessnessnessness …….
—To me!
Siopold!
Consumed.’

The Last Rose of Summer was inserted into the opera as well. Caruso made both popular. I only came across it by my Da whistling it with nails clasped in his teeth. Took me about 30 years to find out what it was. Just the opening bars would get to me always. Then it started turning up in Joyce and everywhere. Strange the ways of the world.

Guidance.
Hm. Sounds like a fried trance,
Given bounds no reason why I can't,
Its your funeral, what if everything I say is a lie,
So cruel, ever stop to ask ' who's helpin' this guy '
When the truth is,
Some slackers sound so stupid,
Thinkin' David Caruso is Cupid,
How you say you speak intelligent,
When all my rhymes flow so elegant,
Then its time for you to know,
This lifestyle you'll outgrow,
Walk a mile in my shoes then we'll go toe-to-toe,
I'm the captain learn your position. Row.
So trapped in and era of transition so,
I'll pass you this, a lyrical miracle ,
Drop to your knees, its hysterical,
Those with soft hearts I'm sure your tears are full,
"Things are rough all over, Ponyboy."
So ill give you a little guidance, a ploy,
Along with a brittle and snide dance to annoy,
"Never settle without trust"
Followed to the letter you'll never bust,
Take heed only if listening is a must,
Oh so blistering to the touch,
And I know it wasn't much,
So take it with a grain of salt,
Else keep on the brain assault,
Crack a bottle of my main malt,
Down it before fighting this insane cult

as Pavarotti

once said, he

trusted life so he

could sing.

so he knew Caruso was

his master.
Here
at ground level
there are several challenges
the least not being
living
which is a dying art

I lived with Crusoe
or was it Caruso?
they both sang when the morning
came idling along.

That was a story of which I was a part of
which was a part of my living that
I'm dying not to think of,

here
at sub zero
in every chapter a hero is born.

It feels like a Sunday and
I'm not sure why,
the sky looks like a bible
blackened with age

I suppose that's one more stage
in the dying to live or the living to die
and I'm not sure why it should be,

it was definitely Caruso
I know
because
he spoke Italian so well.

I feel better now,
sometimes things ****** away
all day and give me no peace
until I find the answer.

have you ever grappled with despair
not in imagery, symbolism or portrayal.

I mean, have you ever felt the elevator drop
the watery weakness that extenuates breath
a depth of fatigue that makes lying on the floor a burden
an aching pounding in your chest,
the broken-glass dryness in your throat
the gritty ache in your eyes
that makes you want to close them forever?

Struggle no more, leaden limbs,
free the weary weight.
Eyes that struggle, release the light.
The body begs to no more fight.
In a blur of sluggish thought,
I whisper sleep's sweet name.
The will has dropped.
The yearning stopped.
I’ll rest on that distant shore.

It was the dawn’s first song
sung  upon a dormer sill:
that euphoric  sound
from orange beak
trilling  his sweet
notes all around.

Along
with others
soon joining in,
all thought of work
was forgotten with a smile
Caruso entertained me for a while.

Not the singer of former age
in concert hall on global stage:
to mention Enrico by name and fame.
Only an urban  blackbird among a throng
of birds in carefree chorus of morning song.

TOBIAS
There's always YouTube or some tunes on iPhones and Soundcloud,
not one for being pompous or too proud to take a handout
I put my hand up for more,

MORE?

righteous indignation from the Beadle,
'remember your station my boy'

Dickens is never available at the library where they lend books,
the books are but Dickens is far too busy or dead.

and thinking Caruso's first name was Robinson was my biggest mistake.

But
it takes all sorts and I like Allsorts especially the liquorice ones.

FALLING INTO THE PAST

the tick tick of the bike
a dog barks
letter on a Welcome mat

the midnight tick of time
the house sighs
Dad's whistle

ambushed by the smell
of honeysuckle
I fall into the Past

red barn
blue sky
a summer to last forever

Caruso 78
I listen to the scratches
like Time trying to sing along

I kiss the whorl
of a fingertip then
the all of you

your body
drifting away from me
on a tide of hurt

'I don't like the way
your eyes
touch me! '

starlings fly up
I walk upon close bitten grass
a sheep laughs

a car rusts on the beach
the roofless house
looks out to sea

the sea is sleeping
I watch it breathing
wonder what it's dreaming

the house hunkers down
its window eyes
gaze upon the coming storm

crouching under a cloud
a mountain
frightened by the storm

walking upon
the meniscus of sleep
unable to dive in

I was going on with the details she told me about...the break up with her husband and all the things she saw when it was happening and burned themselves into her mind. Then years years later I discover the photograph of her then and the photograph contains some of those details. She is out of focus because she doesn't want to be in the photo and moves away just as the shutter is clicked. So we too step out of the poem and her life. All the details mean something to me as I can still hear them all in her voice....the little details that she observed through her tears. Now when she has died and the photo turns up I can tie together all she told me and all what the photo contains and marry them together to tell more of her story. He had cheated on her and she was heartbroken and couldn't stand his presence. Meanwhile the ordinary world still goes on despite her heartbreak and her life about to change. She was kissing his fingertips and then kissing him more and more when he suddenly blurted out that he had had an affair but that it was all over now and it didn't mean anything. But she couldn't live with that. When I came to write it I mostly remembered all the details she told me about rather than the complete whole story and that is what my mind latched onto. If I wrote it today I would probably come in on a different trajectory and it would be a completely different poem and made entirely different choices. But I like what I have captured here and it is more closer to her perception of how it all panned out. It was her voice and I only shaped it into the poem trying to retain her sense of it all. The last verse is my discovering the photograph and all the grief I experienced on seeing what was once only a voice talking to me in the night and crying and crying as she went over all the details again and again.

red barn
blue sky
a summer to last forever

Caruso 78
I listen to the scratches
like Time trying to sing along

I kiss the whorl
of a fingertip then
the all of you

your body
drifting away from me
on a tide of hurt

'I don't like the way
your eyes
touch me! '

starlings fly up
I walk upon close bitten grass
a sheep laughs

a car rusts on the beach
the roofless house
looks out to sea

the sea is sleeping
I watch it breathing
wonder what it's dreaming

the house hunkers down
its window eyes
gaze upon the coming storm

crouching under a cloud
a mountain
frightened by the storm

walking upon
the meniscus of sleep
unable to dive in

& here you are
years later looking like
an out-of-focus-photo of your self
A CLOCK TICKS

A clock
...ticks.

A vase
reflects upon itself

in an enormous ornate
gilt mirror

admires
her own flowers

& how they are
arranged.

A fire
spits sparks

sending shadows
scuttling up walls.

A coal scuttle
is either half empty/half full.

A clock
strikes nine
&... chimes

slightly ahead of
the real time.

.A picture
quaint & antique

hangs slightly askew
against the horrid

wall paper
& its unattractive roses.

A record
(an old shellac 78)

has found a scratch
&  keeps returning to it

picking at the musical phrase
like a scab.

Caruso’s... got...  got... hiccups.

One mirror
gazes into the face
of another mirror.

Both enamoured
of the other

seeing only
themselves.

An un-drunk cup of tea
cools steadily

leaving a thin skin
on top.

A sugar lump
has come to rest

on a small
Turkish carpet

depicting
the delights of Paradise.

A moth falls madly in love
with an old flame

but it soon fizzles
out.

The only thing living
in this room

is an old tattered tortoiseshell
cat asleep

by her master’s
stockinged feet

so deep
she hasn’t even heard

Death
enter
&
leave.

A clock
...ticks.
