They are watching you

A dilapidated billboard sign
From a time, unable to rewind
Large blue eyes behind a pair of glasses
Overlooking the valley of ashes
( F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby.)

They are watching you

The haunting waste of the past nothing lasts
Which linger through its irreversible varnish
The eyes, dimmed vacant, eternally blind tarnished
Forgotten , too many days under the scorching sun
A solemn dumping ground can be found for no one

They are watching you

What’s left of the world is unrecognizable
A waste land, It’s a small world after all
Wake up Rise up Here God’s call
Echoes of the past voiced by the small

They are watching you

A Draconian government grew
All communist too
People didn’t realize what’s in store
Reminiscent of the Book 1984
(George Orwell‘s dystopian novel 1948)

They are watching you

Limited words concept control
Government’s grip won’t let go
People stifled language remove
No praise stand above or to prove

They are watching you

No freedom to think or speak
A slave No better life to seek
Obey don’t ask don’t say
If you try, they’ll take you away

They are watching you

The Past rewritten History gone
A citizen’s job all day long
Dumb society down
Shopping malls in town
Closed burned to the ground

They are watching you

Issued items from the government store
Refused a new razor blade on the knees implore
Yet expected to be clean shaven evermore
The week seek Black market contraband
If caught you lose your hand

They are watching you

Reeducation they proclaim
They know your name
A cog in the wheel, food you sought to steal
The government knows what’s best they maintain
Stay docile. This is not a game.
Driven MAD your mind breaks plan insane

They are watching you

Food scarce people emaciated
Every race creed color Martyrs created
The rich people are getting fat
They retort nothing wrong that

They are watching you

Death of the poor that’s what’s in store
For the good the betterment of mankind?
The best of humanity can no longer find
Too many mouths to feed if they have worth
they are spared beyond that no one cared

They are always watching you

Footnotes
While attending university a minor in literature two books that stayed with me throughout my life are the great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald, and George Orwell‘s 1984. Gatsby, the billboard always watching and the symbolism throughout the book that permanently in my mind that billboard and its significance. George Orwell‘s 1984 was laughed at for so many years , there’s no way it could be a possibility. But today many things in that book are coming to pass. It’s as if “they” use that book for a roadmap to where we are today. Yet people live in a bubble they don’t think an out anything outside their bubble, they stay out of trouble while man’s freedoms are slipping away.
BLT Webster’s Word of the day challenge
3-3-25 draconian
Draconian describes something often a law, policy, restriction that is very severe or cruel.
We don't live
to give
away ourselves
to life
rather
it should
give way
to our uniqueness
individuality
our expression
and freedom
as long as
we still see
the light
of every day-

it shall not
silence our voice
nor stay
in our way

we're the larger
on this score-
life has no say!
Journey to our self
Collectively united
Salvation of man

Title
We are Larger than life
This is my first tribute
3-2-25
"In the end of days, elderly women will see visions,
young men will prophecy."
— You foresaw the storm, the whispers in the wind,
writing warnings in fire, in ink, in truth.

"Man should not fear death,
Fear ability to live."
— And so, you lived, not as a shadow passing through,
but as a flame, burning bright in defiance.

"They ask for truth, yet love the lie,
So I ask you—why?"
— You dared to expose the quiet part,
to say aloud what the world tried to hush,
to hold a mirror to the blind.

"Man flaunts eye candy,
lavish garnish, trophy wife."
— Yet you saw beyond the glitter,
beyond the painted masks of power,
choosing substance over shine.

"All that glitters is not gold."
— You walked away from illusion,
from being someone’s prize,
choosing freedom over chains,
knowing your worth beyond the price of a ring.

"Separate church, state,
People’s civil liberties—
Love, love, freed from tyranny."
— Your words rise against silence,
a voice against the tide,
a poet with conviction,
unwilling to let history be rewritten in dust.

And so, I thank you,
for your fire, your truth,
your defiance, your ink.
Your words are not just written—
they are etched into time,
screamed into existence,
refused to be erased.

The road to the middle is paved with good intentions—
but you never walked to the middle,
you walked beyond.

A gallant man
Donned his Top Hat
Tipped the brim
Smiled ceremoniously

As the young ladies passed by
A glint, a gleam
In the corner of the eye
A gentleman by and bye

At the close of the day
The foyer was the place
An unspoken ceremony
Of  Style and Grace

He Doffed
His outer wrap
Dress Coat Top Hat
Cleaned and pressed

Kept preserved
For the well dressed
At the ready
Of the gentleman‘s leisure

Until the next day
For the well deserved
Sanctimonious
Ceremonial
Continually observed

A prominent display
Of pomp and circumstance
(Pompenstanse)

An elegant dance
Of the well to do
In the year of our Lord 1882

Songs
send simple
profound messages
Even when all
seems lost
There is
always
Music

That’s how
Musicians
find their
Niche
into Fame

Movement
Expression
Key note
Ripple
Effects

Speaks
to the
Power
Music has
In bringing
People
Together

Creating
Hope
when
we have
nothing
else,

Music
will always
be there to
bring about
change
Peace

Yet
profoundly
powerful
effects
can also
Change Society
clear examples are;

John Lennon’s
imagine 1971
invites us to
Question our Values
in the world
we live in and
Imagine one
that is simpler
Where all live in peace

In doing so
Society must
give up their
Beliefs in God

Music
can be
Hypnotic
a snappy beat
a catchy tune
Singing lyrics
without realizing
What the words
Represent

Lyrics such as;
AC/DC 1979
“I’m on a highway to hell “
Eagles 1972
“Witchy women see how high she flies “
John Lennon 1971
“Imagine there’s no heaven it’s easy if you try “

Each of these
Rhythmic
song beats
Keep us
Hypnotized to
what we’re
Singing

I used to laugh
when my parents insisted
Rock music was
Satan’s bandwagon
The Pied Piper
The devils playpen

Blurring
differences between
wrong and right

Teens
Rationalized
it’s just a song
Get real
Give me a Break

We were
a BeatNick
Generation
of ignoramus

You don’t know
what you don’t know
until you know it

Footnote
My heyday was the 1970s Living in Southern California, rock ‘n’ roll and every type of bands from easy listening, country, and everything in between. My youth church group in an. attempt to open dialogue between the teenagers and parents asked each person to bring in their favorite album. And we were going to have Music appreciation and talk about that particular album. So that meant somebody who brought in John Denver got equal respect as somebody who brought in the Doors or Led Zeppelin, Simon & Garfunkel.
In comparison, Simon & Garfunkel is mellow by rock ‘n’ roll standards but back then it was on the blacklist of evil music.
To see the underbelly of music
search on bands that sold their soul to the devil. Or search devil music. You won’t believe the singers and their interviews. John Lennon on that list
who would’ve thought
