In my youth and when mum was still alive everything came easy for us,
We managed to pass our exams,
Have some of our important dreams come true,
Successful in life,
A loving husband and a happy home,
Most problems solved,
Sometimes there was pain and sadness,
Without which life is not complete.
One day I sat with mum as she was reciting Quaran,
Duas and tasbeeh,
She looked angelic and calm,
and peaceful.
Out of curiosity I asked her if she did not find it boring just reciting Quaran verses the whole day,
The answer she gave me solved my question to why I and my siblings were so blessed and lucky,
"I am asking Allah to keep safe my children from calamities of life,
To forgive their sins,
So they taste success in life,
Be happy, prosperous and healthy.
I have already lived my life,
Allah has been kind to me,
And I beg him to give you a joyful,peaceful and successful life,
Strength to overcome your burdens and anxieties.
Here was my mum sacrificing her time in the name of Allah,
"Giving Him all her best,
So he would give us the rest."

Everybody refused to baby sit for me.

At eight months I had front teeth.
I could draw,sing and write at two,
But,I could never decide what I wanted to do.

My ego burst during lockdown,
My wife is a housewife,
I bring home a fat salary,
The breadwinner.
I felt my wife did little at home,
And I complained all the time demanding attention.
All that changed when I stayed at home during lockdown,
I realised being a homemaker is a multitask,
A 24/7 job with no leave or bonuses,
Why my children are so close to their mother than me,
Her gifts their hugs and laughter and sometimes praise from me,
I respect my wife's  career and am glad for lockdown.

Sit in my comfortable sofa in front of the T.V. ,
And watch all my favourite series,
With jars of mix nuts, chocolates and sweets on a side table,
Sit idly reminiscing sweet memories,
Chat for hours with my friends on WhatsApp  and mobile ,
Enjoy and bond with my grandchildren.
I want time for myself,
Which I never had bringing up my children, running the house and working and travelling.

A fisherman's boat buoyed up and down, alone,

Tempting, I went into the ocean,
At first with caution,
The wind in my face,
A wave knocks me down in a haze.
I swim underneath it and onto the boat ,
It is hot,
I dive , swim , and play,
I taste the sea's salty spray,
Run back to the golden sand,
Dig holes, build sand castles with my hands,
I am free, free as a bird,
Without a care in the world.
