The Distance of Longing
Spencer Thomas Aug 2014
For one moment
One small moment
I felt like I could taste the salt of her forehead
With the kiss that closed her eyes goodnight
The city, door-by-door, curtain-by-curtain
Shut
Just as the eyelids that followed
But only hers did I long to see the beauty behind them
And if I were given that chance, not a shimmer of tears
Would I find on this night
Only fulfillment
Only peace of mind

My fingers envy the rays of sun that find her back to gently awaken her
As they spill through her window
My words wish to take on the ways of the wind and carry
To her door just as it opens
My heart’s only offering is to protect hers
With the strength of her own bones

And the body that spurs them
Will hold hers endlessly
When there is no more space between them
No distance left for longing
I wrote this in love and for one person, and now out of love it's for everyone.

Generation Y?
Spencer Thomas Aug 2014
Make a change they say
Do is different but change must come
The beauty of the world still alive
And the human race still kind
But it has its devious twists

Where are we on the map?
Next to the bombing, the shooting,
And the suicide
That’s how we’ll find each other
Tragedy scatters on a map of the world
Like a shotgun blast delivered from the moon

Make a change they say
Do is different but change must come
At our fingertips; endlessness
More information than benefits
And we spread our wings to explore
For hours without knowing another’s face

Is there more power in a blog
Than a marching army of belief?
Oh, the inspiration we stir while
It’s easier to share than to be
The change we want to see
Is this the future?
Or is it digression?

Days
Spencer Thomas May 2015
Oftentimes I wake confused
in a rut, hurt, bruised
sick of stagnant living
Day in day out
clock in clock out
selling all of my time
to a slow ticking clock
until it eventually defines me

These days have the same story
and they all just "go"
Sure the weather changes
what a great conversation starter
But don't you want to change
with the day and be gone the next?
I think more hearts belong on the road
than we let ourselves realize

I know mine does
Missing the road. Tours are fun.

twenty-two
Spencer Thomas Aug 2014
twenty-two years

I should be mad as hell
I should be opening another door
I should have seen more of the world
I should have made my name known
I should take on the world
I should make a change

It is a daily battle between young and grown

I shouldn't be so naive
I should leave the world alone
I won't try to my name known
I have seen the borders of my world
I will let the door stay shut
I am content

twenty-two more
A friend of mine and I talked about how we should be at the peak of our lives at our age, and we feel like we're still not there. This is the battle in the mind of someone my age.

Just a Fling
Spencer Thomas Aug 2014
Shame came to me
she said don't leave me for another
I can't believe I lost my head

If you'll make believe
that this all never happened
I swear I'll never ever lose my way again

Oh maybe love won't be a ring on your finger
just a fling that happens now and then
but for the life of me I just can't remember
if I took the road or if I took your hand

Blame came to me
she said you ruined all my plans
the guilt started tumbling in

words don't come close to the sorrow that I held
but naturally I'll find a way to hold up my chin

Oh maybe love won't be a ring on your finger
just a fling that happens now and then
for the life of me I just can't remember
if I took the road or if I took your hand
