returning back to yourself
can be disconcerting

the cacophany of mind
eating the silence
we had no plan
we had no plan to HAVE a plan
we played in a band
typing and waitressing for rent and beer
and now look
real jobs, house, a few bucks in the bank
kids, grandkids, cats
home gym, basement music bar--
we still have the band

So much resentment has gathered—
Like a letterbox left unopened for years.
May all your unspoken grievances thicken like clouds,
Waiting for the rain to descend.
I know—once the rain begins,
Your bitterness will fall with it.

I love you not in the rain,
But in the freshness that follows—
When the quiet, cool wind drifts through the soul.
In the blurred horizons beyond the rain,
I see neither portraits of the past nor visions of the future,
Only the serene beauty of endless blue.
And yet, you hold on to your anger, your silent sorrows.
I know—when the rain falls, they will all wash away.

You believe your tear-filled eyes escape my gaze.
As you look at me, you imagine
That like a roaring cloud, you’ll envelop me
With all your pain, all your silent storms.
At times, I embrace a quiet wildness—
Perhaps you’ve mastered the art
Of pretending not to understand.
I know—when the rain falls, even sorrow will slip away.

One day, all busyness will cease.
The noise will fade into stillness.
Even needless stubbornness will be forgotten.
And on that day too, the rain will come.
In the glowing darkness, memories will reach out, searching.
Perhaps you won’t recognize me in that light—
And that’s all right.
For I know—when the rain falls,
All your grievances will fall with it.
