Poems

Mary-Eliz Mar 2018
cannot be bought
cannot be found in stores
cannot be touched
or held in your hands

the gifts I want to give you

are the gifts I meant to give you all along
but did not know how
the gifts I tried to give you but could not,
not enough

the gifts I want to give you

won't warm you body
like a woolen sweater
but will warm your spirit

the gifts I want to give you

won't satisfy your hunger
like a box of chocolates
but will soothe a craving
in your soul

the gifts I want to give you

won't be music
played on a machine
but will stir music
deep in your heart

the gifts I want to give you

won't be a book of words
already written
but will be your own
fresh book for you to fill
with your life

the gifts I want to give you

won't be gadgets or tools
won't fit into a box wrapped
in shiny paper
won't have bright colored
bows or tags

the gifts I want to give you
love
 strength
   self-worth
    acceptance
     a free spirit

are all this and more...

I don't want to give you the sun
I want to give you its light
to warm you
and help you find your way

I don't want to give you the moon
I want to give you the eyes
to see its beauty,
the soul to feel its power

I don't want to give you the stars
I want to give you the desire
to reach for them
yourself

the gifts I want to give you
are all this and more

It's seems easy enough to embrace the tradition and hype of the holidays; particularly the  pursuit of perfect gifts for others, in exchange for love and gratitude.

These seemingly  personalized gifts; the new, unique  and packaged, are only tokens. They demand too much of someone so broke and burdened with the world. I am overwhelmed and too exhausted for such quests.  I cannot buy into such craziness without losing my balance and risking emptiness.

This holiday, I need something more:
Courage and strength to face the heaviness of the past, a deeper faith to forgive and heal, a clearer vision and full heart to know I have enough. In rest and prayer I am finding brighter and lighter gifts.  Gifts that satisfy and heal because they too are enough; gifts of time, love, and faith that flow freely from my humbled heart.

These gifts emerge as small seeds of compassion. They take root from my soul, and grow strong through deep gratitude and honest sustenance. I give what strengthens me, gifts that reflect my own wants and needs. I will wrap these gifts in hugs and hand-holding, time spent in reflection and community. I deliver these with loving presence.

This holiday when we unwrap our priceless gifts I want it to be enough. I want them to fill us with healthy peace, and shared happiness. I want us to rise above the hype and face the new year with energy and confidence knowing that we are gifts, and we are enough.

These little Gifts i gift to you

A warm loving smile
A soft handhold
A light touch upon your chest
A few loving words, letting you know your the best.

These little Gifts i gift to you
To hold and cherish within your heart
To keep with you, to call upon if ever we are apart

Recall these little Gifts
If ever you are enveloped in a red mist
Recall these little Gifts and i will come to you, bring you calm
These little Gifts are given to bring you peace not harm

If ever you are lonely or feeling down
Remember these little Gifts, can save you and change a smile from a frown

These little Gifts i gift to you
To hold and cherish within your heart
To keep with you, to call upon if ever we are apart

These little Gifts are priceless and in constant supply
You have no need to order them, to purchase or buy
They are yours to bring to mind freely, just relax and close your eyes.

These little Gifts i gift to you
To hold and cherish within your heart
To keep with you, to call upon if ever we are apart

Remember me as your strength, your guide, your light
Remember me as your weakness too
Remember me in all the things that you do

These little Gifts i gift to you
To hold and cherish within your heart
To keep with you, to call upon if ever we are apart
