They say "love
like you've never been hurt"
but Hurt is the mud
I shaped into walls;
the fallout shelter that
I called home,
while my rivers ran dry
and the dustfall slowed.
In hurt I'm an expert.

They say "love
like you've never been hurt"
but we've made a pact,
Hurt and I:
He will be held close,
a piece of me,
not passed along
to the next boy I find
playing in dirt.

They say "love
like you've never been hurt"
but I promise to love you
like I have.
