The Eternal Hipster
Neville Johnson Sep 2016
The eternal hipster surveys the scene
Puts on his bright, usual smile
Saunters in, knows he is seen
Small talk is his forte
He's skilled at witty repartee
There's a nice looker in that blue dress
He walks her way
He's been a loner way too long
He knows he's gotta stay
In the game, in the world, in life
Or else he'll fade into the twilight
Into the murals, forever lost in play

Scarred, scared and worried
He's been at this too long
He liked it better when he was with the ex
But that's an old sad song
He misses his lover
Why does love have to die?
She's gone which is why he's here
Giving it the college try

The blue dress is worn by Amy
He says, "Rick's the name.
Do you live here in Malibu,
Or on the fruited plain?"
She laughs demurely, then looks away
Explains that she's a widow and a local
It's her night to brave the great indoors
It's her date with fate

Indeed it is, the time is now, the evening is still young
There's a restaurant named Geoffrey's,
Would she care to come along?
She would, and she does, so off they go
The aging hipster with the bright smile
This could be a go
Thank God he left the house tonight
He didn't mope around
This has the possibility
Of something very rare and sound

The Tears Have Dried
Neville Johnson Sep 2016
The tears dried long ago
We've both moved on
Isn't that so?
Lives intertwined
Together but apart
The love never could
Or would leave the heart

No good looking back
What can never be
You just go on
Struggling to see
What's over the rainbow
Thankful for the past
You just go on
Much of it chance

There is no end
No permanent goodbye
You do your best
Maybe tremble and sigh
We both have moved on
The tears have dried

Where Do I Go?
Neville Johnson Sep 2016
It's not about what could have been
But what used to be
I don't look back in anger
Rather misery
What were the good old days
Were not meant to be
Not something you shrug off
You're never free of the memory
Of what we used to do
When it was good for me
But apparently not for her
Wish I could let it be

Where to I go to get back my heart?
I'm now now so alone
Mystified at my misfortune
Alone at home
Nursing this invisible scar
That taunts and haunts me

I liked everything about her
That's what did me in
Gave it all I had
I was in it to win
I've got mementos
To remind me of my love so sure
They need to disappear
Like me into other arms
In a love that's pure

The Trip
Neville Johnson Aug 2016
We met and connected, then she went away
I didn't like texting or skyping, she felt the same way
Romantic letters didn't do it either
I thought the most romantic message would be myself
So there I was, what a surprise for her
All the way there for her
Oh, she was amazed and what a thrill
When she walked up a kissed me, then said
"I'm still your girl."

I said I had something to tell her
She said, "What?," and I said "I love you."
She made it clear she felt the same,
Now we are two

I'm lucky because she loves me more than most people ever get loved
As for that trip I did take
It paid off, does so every day
That was no mistake

In Our Quiet Place
Neville Johnson Aug 2016
In our quiet place together we have shared our love
This is the perfect idyll, enough of
All we need and want, filled with warm memories
Have some hot chocolate, dear, it's a bit of a breeze
Hold me, hold me, hold me boldly
The way you always do
Hold me forever, it's just me and you
Together, so we have been and so we will be
The future is ours and merrily we shall venture
Into the great unknown of time
With the thought that you are forever mine
As you have locked into me
As now, as it will always be
In our quiet place together
Where we share this love
As you have locked into me
As now, as it will always be
In our quiet place together
Where we share this love

Romance Is a Language
Neville Johnson Aug 2016
Romance is a language
You don't learn on your own
Takes two to tango
It ain't on loan
A education on love is what you get
When you find yourself falling
And without a net

Romance is a feeling
Nothing else like it
A gust, a rush, a must have
The perfect stuff
A validation, now you're in the zone
You can't help yourself
No more will you roam

Romance is what comes between
Two who unafraid
Explore the limits of the human heart
This is it, be brave
It is where it's at
What it is all about
Don't you turn away
Use all your resolve

Romance is the objective
The solution to each life
Where two come together
Their spirits unite
You won't forget the feeling
You want it it for your own
Oh, it is wonderful
Get into the zone.
