It's wonderful outside
It's wonderful inside
The trees are changing colour
and it's warm where where I abide
Keith Wilson Feb 2016
Went  a  walk  in  the  park  today.
The  grass  was  glistening  white
with  the  hard  frost.
Two  hardy  souls  were  having
lunch  on  a  bench.
Some  children  playing  livened
up  the  proceedings.
It  was  very  cold.
The  only  view  was  the  brooding
mountains  in  the  far  distance.
I  didn't  stay  long.

A  pheasant  is  strutting
around  my  garden  today.

He's  a  very  beautiful  bird
and  he  knows  it.

Strutting  around  as  if
he's  the  king.

Calling  out  now  and  again
disregarding  all  the  other  birds.

I  must  be  close  to  nature
with  him  in  the  garden.

It's  a  bleak  mid-winters  day.
The  harsh  winter  here  to  stay.

The  shepherd  trudging  in  deep  snow.
Surveying  all  he  sees  below.

He  finds  a  sheep  in  deep  distress.
His  faithful  dog  as  found  the  mess.

She's  been  wounded  on  a  fence.
She's  cold  and  hungry  and  very  tense.

The  shepherd   lifts  her  on  his  back.
And  sets  off  down  the  snowy  track.

The  sight  of  home  is  very  cheery.
As  man  and  beasts  get  very  weary.

Now  in  the  warmth  the  sheep  is  stable.
So  the  man  takes  food  thats  set  on  the  table.

I walked the almost
Deserted beach
Late afternoon
The sun was minting coins
On the placid waters
It was indeed a beautiful
Day awakening my
Poetic imagination
I sat for a while deep
In thought
How could such a place
Turn so hostile and frightening
Storms and thunderous waves
shipwrecks, men drowned
Hostile predators deep under
The lashing waves?
I walked quietly away
At least today the sea
Was behaving itself

I  love  to  walk  the  garden  long.
When  all  the  winter  storms  are  gone.

Yes,  snowdrops  are  the  first  to  show.
Majestic  heads  come  with  the  thaw.

Blankets  of  crocus  are  quite  a  sight.
Pushing  upwards  towards  the  light.

Colorful  daffodils  like  soldiers  stand.
The  finest  regiment  in  the  land.

In  June  the  roses  in  fancy  dress.
Reveal  their  splendor  for  the  sun  to  caress.

Dewdrops  form  as  summer  fades.
As  sharp  east  winds  sweep  up  the  glade.

The  flowers  then  close  their  weary  eyes.
And  sleep  once  more  till  spring  arrives.

The sharp blade
came spiralling down
towards the man's
distraught face
causing a spark
on the solid surface
as he fought
to get away.

(Every Tuesday the O'Bheal Poetry competition in Ireland suggests five unrelated words and the contest or challenge is to make a poem from those five words.  On July 9th the five words were:  spiral   blade   spark   distort   surface ).  One can google.....' O'Bheal Five-Word poetry'  competition and submit any poems for an annual contest where the winner travels to Ireland all expenses paid to read their poem at an event.

The squirrel was back
this morning
just as day was dawning
scrambling up a tree
fitter than you or me
looking out for nuts
There was no ifs or buts
Keith Wilson Mar 2019
I saw the squirrel this morning
swarming up the bird feeder
after the nuts
then he scampered across the lawn
into the bushes
out of sight
Then all the birds came back to the feeder

The storm was raging
Unsubtle changes!
The circumference of the area
was lit up by lightning
flashing down
in the blink of an eye.
All the birds were clustered together
It was quite scary

I walked along the mountain stream
Where dancing sunbeams shone and gleamed

It was such a peaceful place
The gentle breeze carressed my face

I came across a country stile
Where I could sit and think awhile

Far  away  from  this  dangerous  world
The  natural  beauty  just  unfurled.

There seemed no sense
in the tackle
which caused
a double-fracture of the right leg

He should have stayed at home
with his painting on the easel
and his beer fermenting
in the kitchen

When  you  are  young.
The  village  seems  only
one  field  away.
You  can  skip  it  in  no  time.

Middle  aged  it  feels
two  fields  away.
And  is  getting  a  bit

My  friend  Sean  is  fed  up  with  the  British  peoples.
Obsession  about  the  weather.

Is  it  wet.  Is  it  fine.  Is  it   windy.
Could  be  frosty  or  even  snow.
But  generally  its  heavy  rain.

I  don't  mind  to  much.
I  was  in  Egypt,  where  the  weather  is  always  the  same.

Its a cold dark May morning
Much cooler today
Blossoms
are quickly
disappearing
with the overnight rain
Pink petals blown into drifts
Bluebells are in their prime

Still a relatively mild winter
Wonder what's to come
February can be harsh
in this part of the world
Some night frosts though
Signs at the moment it may stay mild
though we'll be lucky to escape the snow
No snow on the mountain tops yet

The tree was eroding
a full length of wood
I had a cup of tea
and listened
to some lyrics
Keith Wilson Aug 2018
There's a large Canadian
Redwood tree
near our garden
The foliage down one side
has turned brown
They say it was caused
by 'The Beast from the East'
a storm we had
earlier in the year
Maybe it will pick up
in the winter

Trees

I am a peculiar tree
Growing half in rock
And half in the sea

The winter winds do bother me
I need the spring to set me free

I envy ivy trees
So full of green

I can't stop the gale
But I can change my sail

Trees  have  been  with  us
right  through  time.
Giving  us  shade,  shelter,
and  privacy.

Their  wood  builds  houses
and  boats.
They  are  the  air  cleaners,
  rain  bringers,  and  prevent  erosion.

We  must  speak  out
and  replace  trees.
Damage  as  already
been  done  to  our  soil.

Please  plant  a  tree
and  save  the  world.

All is well and comes to an end
The daylight into night transcends
The stars and moon replace the sun
Birds and animals cease to run
But rivers, babbling brooks and streams
Continue on as do men's dreams

About  a  long  lost  Uncle.

There is a truly magical valley
Up to the north part of the Lakes District
As you pass through
Each side seems to have individual mountains
As the sun filters and dazzles
With swirling mists
That move around in ghostly fashion
Perhaps we could call it
The  valley of a thousand Hills

Not  at  all  like  the  British

I  have  borrowed  a  fan

I found out
my football coupon was void

There was me
thinking I had won

and going out
in a blaze of glory

For a few minutes
I wanted to sing

My head was in a spin

Crowds gather in the waiting train
Kids fidgeting
Mothers panicking
Man with eyes of steel
glares at me from the opposite seat
Suddenly the train lurches forward
quickly gathering speed
All the tension seems to lift
Kids settle down
Mothers look out of the window
Man opposite puts his head back
and closes his eyes
Yes, the journey has now begun

After going to the store for some greens
I took a walk up Farlton Knot
I needed a guide
The sky was was  a bright red flame colour
Probably some rain on the way
I didn’t stay long
I came down
and made my way home

I got a brand new
ebony black
walking stick
I walked two miles with it
on Monday
It's good on dry land
or wet
The tapping sound
gives you confidence
and you don't think you will fall

Warm Afternoon

It was a really  warm  afternoon

Almost  like  summer
Stayed  out  for  quite  awhile
On  my  return
Shafts  of  sunlight
Were  beaming  through  my  window
An  endless  blue  sky
Across  the  heavens
The  only  sound  was  the  chiming
Of  a  nearby  church  clock

It was a warm and peaceful afternoon

It's ok to grow a beard
these days
It's all the fashion
I remember a chap in the army
put on a charge
for missing one whisker
while shaving
My how things have changed

How  do  the  tourist's

Quite a lot of snow this week
dressing the trees
in lovely fashion
like an old Christmas card
Birds seem to be struggling a bit

is hard

Is it a jumble of words
or a Haiku?
It could be a villanelle
or just plain verse
Perhaps it’s a ten-word poem
or a short short
It could be a short story
or the start of a novel
Does it have to rhyme?
Anyway
poetry seems very popular
for reader and writer

What's a cup of coffee?
'Nana' is it's name

Now I'm having a refill
I think it's coming now
So Sheila, take a bow

While I was asleep last night
Someone's painted the whole world white
They've turned the raindrops into ice
Like pretty jewels they look so nice

Pretty patterns on my windowpane
Perhaps the fairies have been again
Icy flowers and ferns are there
Fairy foliage everywhere

The dormant garden sprang to life
A pretty picture overnight
See the trees and bushes all
Decked as for a fairy ball

Daddy says it isn't so
Fairies disappeared years ago
If they were ever here at all
It's just the harsh winter weather, that's all

Mummy says “They may have been”
But I shouldn't delve into things unseen
I'll be watching out for them all right
They may return in dead of night
