Did you know
the average person
spends only five seconds at a piece of art?

A mere glimpse of Albright’s Dorian Gray
his phantasmal and grotesque visage
silently screaming horror

Only a look at Litchenstein’s pulp women
straw-yellow hair and ivory word bubbles abound
their comic book stories told within one panel

A sighting of Breton’s Lark
a dying sun sinking into the horizon behind her
her tired, shadowy eyes awaiting the next one’s arrival

All these fleeting moments betray art
for they do not deserve seconds
they have earned centuries
inspired by works housed in the Chicago Art Institute
When you wake, the sun rises
From each of your perfect eyes
When you smile, the stark white cliffs
Of your mouth erupt with daisies

When you laugh, a volcano erupts
Covering the world with happiness
When you shout, all those around you
Quake in fear and distress

when you mourn for a lover
You drown the nation in unbearable pain
The dams of anguish break
Leaving the ground seeping in a ****** stain
One tree composes the entire sassafras grove
Vegetative manifest destiny propels its growth

Even as the green leaves turn black

I searched for that sinful seed
That began this unchecked growth
Of endless reproducing replicates

Fatigue, distrust, remorse
Anticipation, heartache, shame
Every emotion I encountered
Claimed to be a person with that power

Yet feelings are false and can be fallen
The bark I’ve scratched, the leaves I’ve torn
Some I’ve even overcome
Still the forest only thickened more

Then I fell myself

Now my ambition, once unjustified and diffuse
Sprouts with the vigor of sassafras
Reclaiming land thought lost with a green
And very visible hand that holds onto mine

The forest continues to densen
Sweet sinful confusion still conceals the heart
Beating the path has only become harder
But in your eyes I see my pain
Irrelevant as the means to the end

We will find the root
And steep its very core
We will drink it
And we will see more
Background:

Info and pictures of sassafras: http://forestry.ohiodnr.gov/sassafras. Relevant is that sassafras trees can reproduce by vegetative propagation so an entire lot can actually be a single tree.

Sassafras tea has been said to have medicinal properties and used to be the flavoring used for “root” beer. However, laboratory tests have shown that safrole, a chemical found in sassafras and other plants, may be carcinogenic and has been connected to liver cancer in lab mice (although these tests were performed using rather high dosages).
Bluebird wings tucked against my side
Day old flowers losing their lust
The smell of books and stories of years ago
Secrets ramming into my teeth
Barefoot drunk on the sky
I have climbed some painful words
Fractured my eyes although I still see
We had days of perfection I have seen magic
Eating oceans of lovers
Abandoned words remain unheard
Your soul became my haven tied into poetic knots
Secrets on my chest became painless

You say I invited the ghost to come today
My skin eating rope
I provoked you
I begin to mentally hate
I will drink from your tears
The moon is streaking hollow kisses
We are beautiful together
But I can't live in the house of bones
You have been diagnosed with the punching bag disease
pimiento angeldust,
where have you been
all my life?

though I wish
I met you sooner
let's not bemoan
days gone by

but start now
in agape mouth
with a thorough intro
upon eggs and 'cado

and this tongue
that loves you so

My whole little world sat down on a blanket.
Cushion of grass below.

Happy gaze of their mother had not sank yet.
Feeling the breeze that blows.

Favorite snacks all packed, arrang'd just so.
Smiling eyes excitement.

Small hints of growth, faces are quite chang'd though.
My sweet enlightenment.

Heavy burdens and sorrow bravely carries
Good Mothers do.

Shelter this innocence as it tarries
Showing love true.

Heartstrings so delicate needing tender care
Never to abuse.

Forever I wish to stay there, as then their
Smiling muse
