Changing Winds
Amy Leigh Mar 2020
Beyond   the    field    and    over    rugged   terrain
I see a  woman.  She   stares   back   and   then   off
into  the   distance   where   the   tree   tops    move
and  the  flowers  grip  the  earth  trying to survive.

There  is  a  storm  closing in.  Furling, whirling
channeling    my     inner     tempest,   I   scream
warning about those who  wander on this  path
But  it  is  lost  and muted - overruled by  forces
stronger than I.

These  gusts  of  fury. They grit their teeth and teach
in  wicked ways.  And  for  a  moment,  I  look away.
I want to  harness  these  changing winds.  I  want to
capture their uncertainty and potential destructions.

I  look  ahead  for  damage,  but  the  woman is gone
and I am alone.

I Loved You Like Spring
Amy Leigh May 2019
I  loved  you  like  spring
blooming   and    full    of    flowers
sunshine   on   days  with   warmth
under  trees, cool  like  the evening
breeze, or rain sometimes for days
as  if  we  should  just   stay   inside

What Are The Good Of Words?

We  write  about  love  about
life about lust about  longing

These Heights
Amy Leigh Apr 2019
.        into love
sprung      and      newly    colored
like  young   birds — surprise  fall
        suddenly
once  and  all  in  or  none  leaving
here  now  we  go  down to  go  up
        head first
breaking barriers escape into new
territory  and  oh!  these   heights !
        just let go
as  if  they  told  us  how  to   forget
it's you — jump soar, fly! I'm ready
now   everything   always  and   all
         at once

The Riverbank

Feeling
fast, feet first
walk    in    slow
I wade water waiting
He  is  the  rocks   beneath
He  is  the   ice   cold   current
Swift,  I   am   swept  into   danger
Quickly,  I lash out  thrashing splashing
I gasp for air, respire; to keep inhaling - gulp!
it fills my lungs, gently, as if serene I begin to die.

Cold red roses like

fury — words   of   ice.   These
shattered  illusions  of   subtle

Simple Distractions
Amy Leigh Oct 2018
Simple    distractions.    The   ease
of subdued conversations.  We lie
to one  another  because we lie to
ourselves   first.
                               These   exchanges —
what  really  is   the  hidden   meaning
behind these  overzealous accusations
and   forthcoming   of   presumptuous
acts?
What  is  truth  in  subtle subjection's
and    altruistic   annexations?   We   cannot
sleep at night. The most evolutionary of  all
humanly cycles—broken.  Are you broken?

I am.

Like Them
Amy Leigh Oct 2018
He   inhaled   deep,  exhaled   slow.  We
were    alone,   alas!   The    sun   setting
the   way  it   does   every  night,  except
noticeably   slow  — calm;   palpitatious
patterns    of   sunset  hitting  fragments
of  dust  gliding, glistening through  the
air.  I  watched   them —  the  minuscule
molecules.  Oh! How tiny! — Otherwise
unseen!  Yet,  there,  circling  — evading
space around us, or perhaps us  around
them,  as  if   in  their  existence,  maybe,
not small after all.  And too, it is similar,
these  drawn   conclusions   like   drawn
curtains  to  light.  However, simple, yet
kind  of  comical, that  there I was in my
existence,  nestled cuddled  snuggled —
delightfully  cozy.  Evidently  small  too,
like them.

Thank you for all the love you gave.
Amy Leigh Oct 2018
These    aches  — I  feel  them  through
the      neck   and   shoulders,   tension
up    through    cracks   and     crevices,
like       the       way      you      left    an
impression. Fluid,  let's  move forward
swift     and     sound.     Poignant    like
oceanic      waves   —   propelling!     or,
neritic    waters — upwelling!  or   even,
tidal  sloughs or  currents— continuous.
I   will   feel  it  all — in like water to the
body, out   like   tears  from   the    eyes.
Admittedly,    the  horizon  does feel far
and    I  am   scared.   However,  maybe
I    am    not   lost  after  all,  maybe  the
journey is now  begging and  truthfully,
this   does  alleviate   some  of  the  pain.

Surely, It Was True
Amy Leigh Oct 2018
Misguided —  we    were    inseparable,   but   things
as  they  do,   always  with   certainty   like  life itself,
change.  These different directions on winding roads
upwards and  even  edged  to  cliffs —these  dangers
in solemn  yet  ostentatious  affirmations: the  I don't
knows   paired   with   the    I    am    sure's.    Which?
Between  the  I  love  you's  and  the   rarity  of  these
honest intentions - these naked  affections with tears diluted  between  breaths. Surely, it was true; true as
formations   upon   mouth   tongue   cheek   in   ***** patterns tracing  up  and  down  skin, hands to thigh
and  then  some — yet now.

In The Morning When —
Amy Leigh Sep 2018
It's   the    worst    in   the    morning
when   the  air   is   thick   and   cold
and   the    warm     beneath   covers
makes  it   difficult  to   get   up  and
start the day.

It's    the    worst   in   the    morning

me all at once.

Never fall in love with a poet.
They will break you apart
like stanzas.
You are a metaphor,
a simile, an oxy-
*****.
Never fall in love with a poet.
They will tear you apart
like a rough draft,
burn you, and then
call it art.

I've always put my lovers
into a pen

Fuel for fire
Ink for words.

But no,
Those were not love
Not like this

For this is love:
the fire itself
and it has burned away all my pages;
previous chapters, titles and cover
Stripped bare
As it should

So here I stand in this raw rarity,
Speechless
While it burns and
burns and
burns

And I have never been happier
To  watch flames
grow higher.
I have never been happier
To feel your warmth.

In Five More Days
Amy Leigh Jan 2015
Little toy car, why so
Blue? Is it because there's seven
hundred miles between me and
you? So pull me in then
let me out, my lonely
heart is on a round-about.

Little photo why so
faded? Is it because you and
I are separated? In five more days I
will be home, and then we can
truly be alone.

Sweet Sixteen
Amy Leigh Mar 2014
I  can't  promise  you  it  wasn't the
way the night went cold or
how their breaths began to swallow
                 syllables  rolling  off   freezing
tongues.  I  can't  promise  you  it wasn't
the   weariness   in   fractured  smiles  or
the slight movement of his  hand  across
innocent  skin, or  the way he whispered
sweet nothings crawling down the back of
her spine. But I can promise you this: the
cerulean gleam of  the  incandescent sky
hid the moon and stars she longed to see,
while the cold rocks cutting into her back
shattered what little love of the world
she had left inside her weary soul.

Dark Alleys
Amy Leigh Feb 2014
the dark is mysterious
I fell fast
the way the depth of his soul
danced in his eyes
like firelight
I was drawn to the shadows
doing tango on the walls
around my desperate, desolate heart

He was daring
I dabbled in the presence of
darkness
I liked being daunted
which was honestly, surprising
at first.

Moonchild

Last night I dreamt I dug
a tunnel through the moon
and as she spun around the earth
I used it as my room

I'd sit upon the edge
dangling my feet out over the stars
tossing pebble stones and such
in aim of hitting mars.

Map

Map
Three little deer in the headlights, on
a nice midnight stroll, grazing
the neighbors grasses while I
wait patiently in the mini-van
for you to come find me.

He stumbles drunk, I can smell the
liquor before it reaches my automatic window
rolling down to let some fresh air through
these anxious, aching bones.

The night passes, not with ease
or grace, but with melancholy as
I look upon a ghost of my past, lying
quiet on the khaki tiled bathroom
floor, help

There's yelling and screaming, and I cry
myself to sleep for hours, while his once
happy, now dull eyes sit and watch
quietly, while tears stain my broken
smile, broken heart.

I muffle the sounds of my weeps with
the cotton blanket covering me, and
although thoughts swim through
my skull, there is nothing to say.

The silence echoes, though,
not out loud, but inside, and I
can feel the numbness taking over
once again. And it scares me, not
because I've lost you, but
because I've lost myself.

State of Existence
Amy Leigh Jul 2013
What is our state of existence?
                                   ( This I'd like to know! )
For smiles fade, for seasons change
for people come and go.

Think about our universe.
                                  ( a wee pebble in a pond! )
There's an entire space out there
but in seconds it could be gone!

If the sun were to actually
explode within our sky,
it'd take us nearly seven minutes
before we'd know
                                   ( then die )                             .
