I am icarus, and you the sun.
I yearn for you, while you beg me to run.
Your touch burns, and I know I shall soon fall
You tell me it’s silly, and to heed father’s call

I am Orpheus, and you Eurydice
Once more, my downfall is the feelings in me
I longed to see, to feel, to embrace
But you faded the moment I turned my face

I am Pyramus, and you Thisbe.
Doomed to love, a mere wall in our way.
Taught to hate, thick blood turning green
Now apart, deep gashes agleam

You are Daphne, and I Apollo
From West to East, you’re all I follow
But now you’ve left, my love has no target
Now you’ve left, and I rue the day we met

Alone in a room filled with people
Deaf as voices blare like sirens
Blind to the colours attacking your eyes
Numb.

Taught to trust a dying system
Accepting subpar
Forced to swallow questions
Gullible.

A pawn in their world
A bee working mindlessly
A money making machine
Expendable.

Never truly stuck
Always able to break free
Free to block the world out
Pure potential.

Wasting what so few have
Clay looking for the right mould
Able to choose what you are
Free to choose.

You were hurt by those mutts.
We are all of silk, but not the same cuts.
You didn’t deserve what they did to you
You’re feeling what none should go through.

Many believe they deserve you.
Others taught it’s right to do.
Some think you wanted it.
Monsters do it for the thrill they get.

They are a separate breed.
A species driven by lustful greed
They steal innocence from the joyful
They sink society. Every theft, a hard pull

I was once a bright, young, unsullied gem
Then I became one of them
I have seen their dark abyss.
A whirlpool spurting evil, like ticking a list

I’m sorry for the demons that ravish our world.
I’m sorry that you are almost always the target.
I’m sorry that you couldn’t be saved in time.
I’m sorry that I am one of them.

She left and I was free
Free as a bird
Free as a wild herd
Free

She left and I was happy
Happy to chase better things
Happy to stretch my wings
Happy

She left and I was alone.
Alone to do what I please.
Alone to hear the silence at home.
Alone.

She left and I am free.
Free as a bird in a cage.
Free as a man living wage to wage.
Free.

Suffocating in the steam of the shower
Suffocating as minutes imitate hours
Suffocating as I use all my power
To try rekindle what once was ours

Inhaling the embers of our love
Inhaling what once was enough
Inhaling the end of what had begun
Just to realise nothing can be done

Breathing an unwanted gulp of air
Breathing as my pain is left bare
Breathing your imagined scent
Leaving me full of discontent

Realising my heart is no longer yours
Realising our love is a closed door
Realising how empty I am
Realising how love is a scam.

Father, another child has taken my toy.
Take it back, boy. Be a man.
Father, my work was ruined by a classmate.
Do the same to his, boy. Be a man.
Father, I’ve fallen, I need help.
Get up yourself, boy. Be a man
Father, I’m lost, the darkness encases.
Find a way back home, boy. Be a man
Father, the icy air bites.
Warm yourself up, boy. Be a man
Father, hungry eyes stalk me in the dark
Toughen up and face them, boy. Be a man
Father, a pack of wolves approach
Fight back, boy. Be a man
Father, they have caught me.

Help…

Son, I should’ve been there.
Don’t cry, father. Be a man

Permanent impermanence,
Ebb and flow, constant dance.
Our short time spent on their land,
You are merely footprints in the sand.

Life death, push pull.
Strive for nothing, bipedal mules.
Mediocrity, woe, walk hand in hand.
You are just footprints in the sand.

Riches, fortune, fame.
Ultimate prizes for end of game.
Lambs to global slaughter,
Footprints swallowed by the water.

Puppets of puppeteers.
Originality, their deep fear.
Take every son, take every daughter
Discarded footprints swallowed by the water

Thieves in day
Hoarding every say
Exhibiting greed with ease
We are but footprints in the breeze

Leaders of our lives
Trapped in manmade hives
Take our honey, no thank you or please
Prove we are footprints in the breeze

Nothing but tools.
Played like fools.
Footprints, missed by many.
Footprints, replaced by any.
