They cling to the earth
like lichens
in deep meditation

Lophophora williamsii.
Fallen warriors sprinkled
throughout the blackbrush and mesquite
there in the valley of the Rio Grande.

They whisper to you
as you roam that arid slab of ground
and spin like Van Gogh
in the night sky
while you sleep.

They call you this way
and that
lead you in directions
you did not intend.

In the dry washes
beware
rattlesnakes wait in every thin patch
of shade

and at night
lightning switches the lights on
and off
and on again.

Once the spirit
of this unassuming succulent
enters into you
accepts you
uplifts you
the sky opens
and reveals the pulsing heart of
God's creation
speaking softly in tongues
heard only at the beginning.

It is glory then.

I took a train
to ease the pain
it dropped me off
at 4th and Main
But then I guess
I can’t complain
it’s better than dropping
from a plane
For if I did
I must explain
right where I stand
would be a stain
and there a while
it would remain

unless of course

it rained
Just messing around

Clear mountain streams rush
in waterfall seduction,
flowing desires upon perfect flesh,
shimmering on dewdrop shoulders,
saturated lips embrace,
glistening skin bared to a bashful sky
neath aquamarine dreams
where we bathe
drenched in the cascading love
of each other

I finally got to kiss her
and my poor heart skipped a beat
My mind was whirling rapidly
when our lips came to meet

I can’t explain the feeling
I was brimming with desire
Heat was running down my spine,
it was raging like a fire

My entire body quivered
I was shaking head to toe
I never felt a kiss so good
and wanted her to know

I finally got to kiss her
but there’s nothing I could say
Because I could not seem to talk,
she took my breath away

.

I saw her walking down the path,
then leaning on this tree
I wondered if she just might like
to be up here with me

I said, “come on, it’s nice up here”
She said, “I like the ground”
I yelled, “the view is very clear,
I can see for miles around”

She said, “but here the grass is green,
the flowers at my eye
I could not see these wondrous things
from up there in the sky”

“This tree is old, this branch is strong,
it easily holds the weight
I’ve been up here an hour or so
I’m sure that it won’t break”

“Oh that’s not it, my climbing friend,
that is not it at all
I do not think that branch is weak
and both of us would fall”

“Then what, if you will tell me please
keeps you so far below
For where I’m at, this highest peak
provides a perfect show”

“I just prefer the feeling of
the earth beneath my feet
The fragrance of the summer breeze
upon my face so sweet”

“But way up here the sky is blue,
like nothing that you’ve seen
The valley and the mountain side,
as if comes from a dream"

“Well, I’ll not climb this tree with you
and if a friend you be
Then you will slip down from that branch
and come down here with me”

I shimmied down the mighty oak
and staring in her eyes
I saw a view I’d never seen
on any morning skies

She said, “I’m glad you didn’t fall
from up there way above"

That’s when I thought, oh yes I did,
for I just fell in love

I found her to be beautiful
much more than any sights
And truth be known, I’m glad I’m down
for I’m afraid of heights

(But don't tell her)

You are the glow as I crawl through the darkness,
lighting my way so these eyes they can see
A soft woolen blanket when winter is reaching,
wrapping the warmth of your arms around me

You are the shelter when storms fill the heavens,
keeping me dry as each raindrop does fall
A calming voice that I hear in the distance,
when every sorrow about me does call

You are the strength as my knees slowly weaken,
lifting me up when I’ve nothing to give
The precious life as I feel I am dying,
giving me hope when I don’t want to live

You are my world, every day I am facing,
showing me love is a beautiful view
All that I wish is whenever you need me,
I will be all of these same things for you

Just in case
you take a peek
to see what I
did write

It's once again
"I love you"
upon this page
of white

And if per chance
you stay a while
in hopes of
reading more

Let me use
this final verse
to say
you I adore

In a hummingbird's tear drop
I see a reflection
of sorrow filled sunsets
on strawberry skies

Loneliness wept
at the edge of a petal
its fragrance now missing
the look in your eyes

Quivering clouds
with no rain in the forecast
alone from the feelings
my heart does display

Watching it fly
upon wing shadowed silence
empty and saddened
since you went away
The sea is a landing,
The mountains, but ribs,
Merely brittle, sandy mounds,
That cradle and rock, my song,
The oceans, bath water foaming,
My body is all encompassed
In void, in elements of feather,
Light as the rays from the stars,
The Great Lakes are puddles,
And all bands of the ancient
Forest are wrapped in a ball,
The world is a playful bubble,
Only one note from the music
Of the spheres, a loosed bauble
Born of sparks, cosmic clouds,
Breaking in the nebulas of blistering
Iris, exploding in the joyous eyes
Of a waking child.

                             Yet, there is only
Now, I am, locked in a dreamhouse,
By a vast sea, on old branches of tree,
And, I can only look, grow, daze into
Shut mystic heavens, and wonder.
Can I truly, only, live in dream?
My makeshift world is drying,
I am from sprinkled waters
Dropped like tears,
Graces that fell
From the sky.
