When the night wind makes the pine trees creak
And the pale clouds glide across the dark sky,
Go out my child, go out and seek
Your soul: The Eternal I.

For all the grasses rustling at your feet
And every flaming star that glitters high
Above you, close up and meet
In you: The Eternal I.

Yes, my child, go out into the world; walk slow
And silent, comprehending all, and by and by
Your soul, the Universe, will know
Itself: the Eternal I.
Dame Jane Morris Goodall, DBE (born Valerie Jane Morris-Goodall on 3 April 1934) is a British primatologist, ethologist, anthropologist, and UN Messenger of Peace.
Considered to be the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees, Goodall is best known for her 45-year study of social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania.
She is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots & Shoots program, and she has worked extensively on conservation and animal welfare issues. She has served on the board of the Nonhuman Rights Project since its founding in 1996.

Goodall is the former president of Advocates for Animals, an organization based in Edinburgh, Scotland, that campaigns against the use of animals in medical research, zoos, farming and sport.

Goodall is a devoted vegetarian and advocates the diet for ethical, environmental, and health reasons. In The Inner World of Farm Animals, Goodall writes that farm animals are "far more aware and intelligent than we ever imagined and, despite having been bred as domestic slaves, they are individual beings in their own right. As such, they deserve our respect. And our help. Who will plead for them if we are silent?”
Goodall has also said, “Thousands of people who say they 'love' animals sit down once or twice a day to enjoy the flesh of creatures who have been treated so with little respect and kindness just to make more meat."

In April 2008, Goodall gave a lecture entitled "Reason for Hope" at the University of San Diego's Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Distinguished Lecture Series.

the urban ecosystem
breeds the urban beast;
the two-legged feral brute

they board their clockwork motorcages
the young ones in predatious packs
the old, too weathered to care
animal autonomy
born from sweatshop routines

i imagine myself
as a metropolitan jane goodall
observing and assimilating
taking note of the cacophony of
hoots and and hollers
the city-born mating calls
the high-topped courtship dances
******* civility born from enslaved mindsets

a young, dark-skinned boy
let's rhyme flow freeformed
to the rhythm of a young girls dancing feet
stomps and claps excite the celebration
of abandoned social etiquette
and of my foreign presence

i resemble some exotic missing link
a mix of this, that and the other
my skin, a rare quilt
and this draws more attention
than a gold-dusted african queen

i place myself in the back
peering through the windows of this transit jungle
feeling my heart skip beats
boom...boom...shhhh...
i must've left my rhythm in my other heritage
because i can't catch the ancient flow
but my neck leads my head in bobs

my brain rattles with old soul memories
and i see these young folks on the train
held back by centuries of black struggle
but forever rejoicing in african pulse
forever embodying our ancestoral pride

and i think, how peculiar
on the outside looking in like a fishbowl
exiled from my own brown-skinned tribe
with my oppression fitted like a glove
my blackness a mere disguise
my blackness camouflage
my blackness
not quite
black
enough

Edward Coles Dec 2014
I remember all of the stupid things.
The gap in my first love's fringe
that appeared only when she was flustered,
or torn between *** and G-d.
The nursery teacher who resembled
Jane Goodall and sat with me
whilst my hayfever was too potent
to play out in the sun.

I remember the exuberance of heat
on the concrete slabs in my first back garden.
How my mother would take
boiling water to the empires of ants
that would find life in the cracks
and crevices between my footfalls.
I remember how silent they were
through oppression and death.

I remember my first sight of the ocean.
How serene it looked in the distance,
how unforgiving and cold it was
once I threw my whole weight into it.
The shivering donkeys on the beach,
agitated by the ice-cream crowds;
the man who handled snakes for a living
and persuaded me to touch a killer.

I remember my first guitar
and how I stared at it helplessly
for two hours, like a teenage boy
on his first sight of a ******.
The first sad song to deliver a feeling
never experienced, but communicated;
how adults failed to answer the questions
that music gave forth effortlessly.

I remember when you started leaving
kisses at the end of your messages,
the formulaic gaps in time
before I would hear from you again;
your costume of nonchalance.
The way you appeared in the wasteland hours,
playing the therapist with your kind words
and history of neurosis.

I remember the sheet of plastic
that shielded me from the rain as a child,
the rubber wheels of my carriage
buckling through puddles and gaps;
the first exposure to nature's lullaby,
as I fall asleep through storm and traffic.
I remember how easily sleep once came,
and how I resisted it all the same.

I remember my recurring nightmare.
A big red button and the doors of hell;
some spectre of infinite density
that caterwauled for the destruction
of all things human, all things new.
The way my mother's arms were infallible,
the priest's glare, omniscient;
the revolting concept of a cigarette.

I remember all of the useless things.
The rings around my grandfather's eyes
on the only occasion I saw him cry.
Kissing Rebecca on the lips,
cementing our love with tree sap
and the promise of an endless summer.
I remember the first time I felt sad
without having a reason to be so.

I remember the shine of the room
when I took pills for the first time;
the incorrigible thirst for water
and the racing confessions that followed.
I remember how it felt,
the first time I trapped someone in a poem;
how easy it was to forget them
once reduced to words and half-truths.

where one ends the other begins, reads the title

“Please listen to my new romantic ballad: 'I Hate Everybody'!”
“ ...'I Hate Everybody'? That doesn't sound romantic!”
“It is the way I sing it.”
   “But how?”
“I sing it softly without emphasizing the word hate.”
“Yes, that would be the way to do it, I s'pose.”
“It works best for everybody. Hate is such a
negative emotion. It destroys one from the core.”
“Surely. Your beautiful ballad: 'I Hate Everybody,' will do
much I pray to heal those who have known and lost love.”
“...'Shut Up or I'll Give You the Jeffrey Dahmer Treatment!'”
   “What?!”
“That's my new song. It speaks to today's suicidal youth.”
“Thank God Jack Cousteau & plain Jane monkey **** Goodall have supported and worked for P.B.S.; W.H.O. & the U.N. These or-ganizations unabashedly support world govt., forced infanticide/ aborticide/sterilization, green zones, and depopulation.”
   “Don't forget F.E.M.A.!”
   “Hippies lead richly-mystical lives.”
“The rise in autism is easily traced back to the rise in
the number of serums administered to our  newborns.”
“This slippage in bra & girdle ensembles reflects poorly upon the ways of the Tao. I smite the enemies of international banking till they capitulate. No one can be taught who fights against learning.”
“We must distinguish betwixt the poor & the gentry: the poor: hoard; the rich: stockpile. Let us remain steadfast and resolute; kind and caring. Our stems wilt, our leaves curl, our women struggle against  Lycra.”
“God Bless you Abraham & Abbey Lincoln. Long live my bald patch. God, end diffusion & penury & restore calibration. Amen.”
One Morning

Blue haze is the bay of Cascais
and it is summer were flowers is a good business
now that there are so many deaths
thanks to the virus that will not go away.
Jane Goodall, says we have only ourselves to blame
we have  misused the nature and its laws too long
and now it is payback time.
As usual, it is blameless who suffer the most
as they are often old and sick.
I see two freighters at anchor I can see the cooks
preparing breakfast as the crew sleep.
They will wake up to the smell of coffee brewed
strong this morn,
the cook on one of the ships stands on deck coffee
mug in hand smoking a cigarette enjoying the silence
which is warm and wraps him in a sense of peace.
The older members of the tribulation are up and about
while the younger ones sleep as long as they can,
Blessed are the ones who sleep.
The building where I live is an island drifting about
full of people who have no their world is coming to an end
but the still cling to life as it was
it is to so hard to adjust to a new epoch that holds
no promises of a future bright.
