Wade Redfearn Sep 2010
He loved it when she slid up
to him, as sweet as a sprinkle doughnut -
but now, something has befallen her,
she's been burned or frozen, tastes more like
cinnamon raisin; but by virtue of his
firelit face and tall tales,
he still gets invited out.
_________

He creaks upstairs an hour late, we
are already tangled up on the
back porch, smoking, and the
liquor has made everything
an economy of scale.

He is a ray of sunshine. Tells us
all the old groaners. The big fish.
Ultimately says, "Happy birthday.
Never let your guard down."
and hobbles off, with barb-wire chafing
his heel, and the rheumatic suspicion
that "rest" and "wellness" are
the fables taught to us by
bogeymen, trying to convince us
there are no bogeymen.

I am a tender Twenty tonight.
I want to twirl my fists in Muhammad Ali speedbag-spirals,
saying, "I am the champion. Never undefended."
But I am too drunk, and maybe
too humiliated.

God! He floats like painkillers. He stings like loss.

There he is, the tall order, the iron giant:
a two-story brainfreeze milkshake.

I shudder, a pipsqueak of a prizefighter.
The bucktoothed squirt at the icecream booth,
too short to notice that there are only three flavours.
And all of them involve pistachios! Gasp!

Todays prompt, write an index poem....sorry  having scheduling difficulties, so pulled this out of the archives.....most of the lines are from movies, or australian tv adverts or are commonly used phrases.... tacked together to create a list poem, first written in 2012 and added or altered over the past 4 years...still a work in progress.
ANH Sep 2013
Eyes squint against the machine
gun moisture; tongue sweeps
lips dry and hair soaks
to add to spiralling streams
running tearlike around raw eyes;
Autumn brainfreeze strikes like
whiplash in back of head and
creeps vicelike around quivering
throat; a million pins into bare skin.
Face is upturned to the downpour.
wax Jan 2014
floating down the streets the october air gives me brainfreeze
i recognise nothing but the gloomy nightfall which follows me
the suburban cemetery walls are caving in
and the rotting leaves strewn over the pavement smell like death
they crunch like bones under my boots
the oak trees are stripped to their skeletons
the damaged skies are leaking darkness and staining the clouds
the icy metal of your door handle is burning me
maybe there’s a fire behind these walls
but there’s no windows to look through so I can’t tell
please let me in
they’re coming for me again
everything is fading to black and i can’t breathe
im choking on glacial words like blocks of ice in the back of my throat
but you still tell me to cool down
when everything i ever needed was knitted into the warmth of your embrace
Cassis Myrtille Aug 2013
Sometimes,
while writing
a poem
My hand starts to shiver
And I just can't seem to continue.
like today
just now
when I wanted to write a poem
about
the lovely ties I made today
and I don't know why
Usually I don't get stuck
But today it
was
literally
brainfreeze.
And my hand started shivering.
And I deleted the entire poem
Because I realized
that I probably can't write poetry.

The poem didn't sound right.
But most importantly,
it didn't sound like
what I would write.

I can't seem to write poetry.

with every breath you take you inhale a part of my soul
atoms lifting off my face through your windpipe in layers shed like graphite
dyson vacuums are amateurs compared to you
**** me off
black holes don't **** like you do
who ever wants a brainfreeze keep ******* cause you got nothing on her
i get turned on and then you **** me off
i give your oral presentation a B-
the breeze on my pole liberates all tension
i am ***** as buildings have balconies
i am ***** as kites catch wind
i am ***** as pens drip fine, bold, rich ink from their well crafted, metallic, ornamental tips
i bust all my bad habits on to you, you make sure they never hang around too long, not to get affixed  ...just a taste satisfies
you go as deep as the magnificent swimmers of the ocean
you go as deep as lightsabers do through rebel ****
you go as deep as words cut the pillars fortifying self esteem monuments
nice.
satisfaction guaranteed or your beauty back
gabby May 2020
the heart gets used to coldness.
those butteflies feel frozen.
and you realise
a brainfreeze is better than
milions of burning thoughts.
had this poem in mind while eating ice cream.
