"agat" poems
Bhíomar ag imirt haca an lá sin Agus bhí tu ina bhall de mo fhoirenn B' uimir a dó tú: mise, uimhir a trí Thog an fhoireann sealanna chun mo chathoir a bhrúite. An 'carbad na tine ' mar a dúirt mé Ba naíchóiste é i ndáiríre. Bhí tú ag tiomáint Agus bhí tú ag rá rudaí Chun an leanamh a cuireadh isteach air Coisúil le 'Nil aon seanc agat' nó 'Iontach! Fior-iontach!' Níor dhúirt tú aon rud nuar a luaigh mé gurb inís Hamlet breacht dom. B'fhedír 'dáiríre?' ach sin é. Tar éis ár gcluiche Ghabh mé búiochas duit Bhí tú ina sheasamh ar an staighre Bhí mise ag strechaint le mo bhúiochas Mo mhaoltheanga: tá fhios agat Chonaic mé an trua i do shúile Bhí mé lag agus bhí fhios agat Chuaigh tú sios staighre gan fhocal Fádo, duirt tú go leor...

*Black agat cat koshei-deathless fire in a skull a conjuring crone grand mother of terrors nag draped in black the key hole to her door made of teeth black salt queen she rings the  alter bell her curse return to sender address known dancing alligator pendents worry dolls worried she dances on chicken legs For many years now I watched her son "I have been trailing this old murderer, this cunning ancient seducer, this revolting old rake, deformed by old age yet disguising himself time and again as a youthful prince charming. This crafty hunter of the broken-hearted, this vampire wooer with a voice as bittersweet as that of a cello on a lonely night, a subtle, velvety charlatan, a master of stratagems, a magic piper who draws the desperate and lonely into the folds of his silken cloak. The ancient serial killer of disappointed souls."*

The first words I learn in every language I know Are ones of politesse Danke-s, arigato-s, and go raibh maith agat-s dancing across my lips “It is important” My teachers say To be able to show gratitude for the helpful stranger that shows you the way to your room and opens their culture to you It is important to be able to say please, Even if the rest of the sentence is broken beyond recognition A por favor will set you up for some understanding beyond words, It is important that you can say yes, a diminutive oui so even if you have nothing else to say, they know the explained menu has gotten through somehow and da, you would like the pasta, It is important that you can say no Nein niet non nee níl nem nei não Even if they don’t want to hear it, No Even if it could mean your life, No Is the only word that I never forget to pack in my suitcase.
