I decorate my black & white life
In red & blue lights
With an oath to uphold integrity
To balance wrong and right
I’m married to lady justice
My instincts, ready for the draw
I am a servant of the people
But I am also their law
Many people don’t give police men and women the respect they deserve. They see the worst parts of humanity every single day and one of their occupational hazards is not coming home to their family.. I appreciate their exsistence and respect what they do.

His Words
Grace E Mar 2019
She wrapped herself in his words,
They fit her perfectly.
She danced in front of the mirror,
In her pretty new ensemble.
“This is what he thinks of me”
Is what she painted her lips with,
The cuffs that adorned her wrists,
A silken robe that glazed her curves.
His words were, a grand jewel hung from her neck.
& she was so proud to flaunt them.

The Mermaid & The Sailor
Grace E Mar 2019
His briny heart leapt at her sight.
The girl who was the sea.
Sunshine weaved into her hair,
Tail long, blue & scaly.
She threw a garland of shells,
Round his neck when he approached,
Her sailor had returned,
For their plan to elope.
He held a ring of pearls,
He found for her in oysters.
Placed it on her finger.
They kissed in the ocean moisture.
They spent the night together.
I’m sure the rest you know,
They were from different worlds,
So soon, she had to go.
Now if ever you’re at the sea &
Spot a man starring longingly to the water,
Just know that it is he,
Waiting for Poseidon’s daughter.

The Female Struggle
Grace E Mar 2019
No matter how much she tries
Blushes and buffs
Dips and foams
Softens or scuffs
The resounding feedback is:
You’re just.. not good enough
the industry first create insecurity’s in us women, by showing us what a true woman should be like, the photoshopped essence of feminine beauty. Then, caters to our insecurities, by selling us all the creams, lotions, potions, goos, and spells we need to be good enough. It’s wack, but I guess that’s how it goes.

Lioness
Grace E Mar 2019
She’s hungry & patient
A deadly combination
Slinking low, undetected
Hidden in her station
She’s locked you in
Presence unannounced
Step by cautious step
She’s ready for the pounce
She is a warrior, a hunter
With refined, lethal finesse
Don’t be fooled by her kitten eyes
The girl’s a lioness

Drowning in Him
Grace E Mar 2019
The days pass & he lingers
I sip on the memory
Of his calloused fingers
Like he etched his initials into my skin
I, robed in his jacket
That still smells like him

I dance whenever I recall
Our nights together
When we exposed it all
I was the sea
We took and gave
& elated, he splashed
Inside my waves

Abracadabra
Grace E Mar 2019
Ladies and Gentlemen!

My next act,
Is one of mind bending originality.
Using only mirrors and shadows,
Allow me to contort your reality!
I employ the pledge to invite,
The turn excite
& the prestige,
To make you question,
What’s wrong & what right.
But remember, dear audience
Keep your gaze transfixed on the light
As I defy physics, stay in your seat
Lest you **** the illusion.
Please scream & throw roses at my feet.
You came here, after all
To have your intellects ruled.
& you let me do it
Because you loved to be fooled
Poets are word magicians

El Matador
Grace E Mar 2019
Fear gripped his heart
His head dropped, in a bow
mouthing anxious prayers
He wiped the sweat from his brow

Adrenaline clothed his spirit
Palms bloodied with astillas
As trembling hands grasped his rosary
& he pled with Maria

The crowd thundered with cheers
The stadium started to quake
As he stood and sheathed his sword
The ground began to shake

He waved his right hand to the masses
The applause rumbled in floods
Drunk on a prehistoric instinct
& a twisted thirst for blood

The beast snorted in
Fierce, wild & hostile
He lowered his horns for battle
Rage plumed from his nostrils

The matador, stood unmoved
Not showing the creature his fear
Yet as the crowd trickled silent
He allowed himself a single tear

The victory was already his
The animal would never glimpse tomorrow
Yet he swirled his cape before the congregation
& to his opponent shouted “TORO!”

Playing Doctor
Grace E Mar 2019
He likes to play operation on me,
Leaving mutilations under my skin.
Lacerations, ****** incisions
No bandage, no stitches,
Not a cast to correct the injury.
He opens me up, shreds me
And leaves me to heal in weird ways.
So,
Each time he does it to me
I become a bit more unrecognizable from the person I was before
my insurance doesn’t cover emotional abuse or broken hearts. Ow ow ow

My King
Grace E Mar 2019
the light drips in through
narrow slats of our curtains
he rolls out of bed
another day of toiling
i see him slip off his pajamas
and pull his work pants on
he sees himself as nothing,
but i see a mighty man
girding himself with a belt
his shirt, a breastplate
his work boots, comparable to the caligae of Roman soldiers
his hat, a warriors helmet
and in this moment as
this humble knight stands before my bedside
i can only think
“other women can keep their prince charmings. I have found a true king.”

Uni-Verse
Grace E Mar 2019
Uni- One
Verse-  A group of lines that form a unit in a poem or song; a stanza
One Verse

and He said
“LET THERE BE LIGHT.”
Some people say “the universe helped me”
Or the “it must have been the universe”
But the universe is a created thing, with no power of its own to help us. It is He who spoke the universe with His voice, He who is powerful enough to speak one verse and create a moving, living, breathing poem. He is our help and He is the One leading us.

When Warriors Fall in Love
Grace E Mar 2019
we come together
broken from the fight
& dance in the ashes
of our incinerated paradise
We profess our mutual adoration
We resurrect together
Then after we tear down
We rebuild something better
when two warriors fall in love, war is bound to happen.

Untitled
Grace E Mar 2019
I must. Think of. A title
And I must do it now
It has to be eye-catching
It has to be WOW!
It has to have the perfect pop
To match my poems beat
It’ll have to be mysterious
Thoughtful and discrete
Been sitting here for hours
This is such a tedious stall
But as I read this poem I realize
It doesn’t need a title at all
:)

Hiking
Grace E Mar 2019
Black bark looms
Deep inside the misty forest
Moss intertwines
With branches
We hike side by side
Until we realize
We are chanting
A haunting composition
Of quiet wishes
And confessions to each other
Naked in each other presence
Yet fully clothed
Naked underneath these branches
We whisper our hearts
To the earth and each other
Silently
We scatter the ashes of our brokenness
Beneath the leaves

Layers
Grace E Mar 2019
There are layers of the human soul
That exist
That we are not even aware we have
But
Endure a deep trauma
Loose a loved one
Say goodbye to something highly valued and greatly treasured
And
You will discover those layers
You will discover a strength
So profound
You almost wish you didn’t have it.
A strength you come to despise
A resilience that becomes a nuisance
Because as much as you want to
Call it quits, throw in the towel
You can’t because you simply KNOW
You are too strong to give up now

Heavens Life Support
Grace E Mar 2019
My heart is beating
But I’m not telling it to beat
My nose keeps gulping in air
But I’m not telling it to breathe
Right now I feel dead
Though my eyes still blink
By Gods will alone
My life keeps going
Some purpose unknown
That still needs fulfilling
Who am I to question why I go or stay
Living on Heavens life support
He whispers “I’ll get you to the next moment. I’ll get you to the next day.”

Ballet

Pointed toes
Touch the stage of life
The curtain opens
       Silence
Delectable first step
The wind section of the orechestea ushers me in
I am the music
I am the audience
I am the dancer
All in one moment
Second step
Anxiety
The brass section barges into my being
I am the brass
Stomping with elegance
Storming with poise
I am the storm
I am the victim being flung around by wind and by brass
And silence
Twirl
Flow
Ethereal skirt twill above my ankles
Passion and hate
Love and peace
Caught in the spot light
Beaming on stage
Chasing me like a criminal
Caught in a pursuit
I am the criminal
I am the law
Black. White.
Torture. Pleasure
Sailing through gravity
Land
Step
Raise a trembling hand to the light

His Feet
Grace E Feb 2019
Saintliness
Bought at a fee
Unconditional
Love Xs three
So blind eyes
May finally see
Held him there upon that cursed tree
There was a penalty to pay for you and me
For our willful wayward wandering and
Our depravity
He came to set
The captive free
heal the broken
Calm the sea
Release us from
Our treachery
To show us all
That we can be
When His holy feet
Touched history

In His Arms
Grace E Feb 2019
His left arm
The arm closest to his heart
Was placed beneath my head
Supporting me
His right arm
His dominant arm
Was embracing my torso
Protecting me
I’ve never felt so satisfied
Wrapped tightly
Knotted in his warmth and strength
Nothing can hurt me
Not here
Not in this moment
Not so long as he’s around
“His left arm is under my head and his right arm embraces me. Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you by the gazelles and does of the field, do not arouse love until it so desires.” - Song of Solomon 2:6-7

Grace E Feb 2019
You’ve walked with me,
Through the dark days
And I need your dark roast
In the deepest of ways
And your warming presence
Consistently stays

As the sun bursts through the gate
I find myself anxious
I can stand when you’re late
When I hear you’re coming
I can just hardly wait
I’m pacing and racing
I need your taste

I know, from my lips
You won’t drift very far
So Coffee, thank you
I adore all that you are

When Love Dies
Grace E Feb 2019
Love never dies in the thick of battle
Love never dies in the disputes
Never, in the voices, raised like thunder
Nor the hands, slamming like a judges gravel

No,

Love dies in silent retreats into numbness
Love dies in complacency
Love dies in the quiet shut of the door of
”I simply don’t care”

I was trying to grow

Revelation
Grace E Jan 2019
I drank in the words
Dancing off the page
Pouring into my heart
My mind opened
Like a flower turning towards the Sun
And the words flowed into me

They say,
He sits on a throne in the heavens,

A rainbow surrounds His throne.

A sea like glass,
Proceeds before His throne.
From the throne comes,
Thunder, lightening and a rushing voice like many waters.
Around Him sit 24 elders,
With crowns like gold on their heads.
Four living creatures, with eyes on both sides of their head,
Serve Him in His throne room.
And whenever they give thanks to Him,
The elders cast their crowns of gold at His feet.
Proclaiming He is worthy of all glory, honor and power.
He who was and is and is to come.

Her Hands
Grace E Jan 2019
Her hands were bohemian.

Guitar string calloused finger tips,

Colorful paints speckled her skin.
Fragrent reds, gypsy yellows and healing greens.

Dense plant soil beneath her nails.

Her hands created,
Her hands cooked,
Her hands served,
And toiled.

Her hands were bohemian.
