It's complicated
The words that reverberated
Against the walls
You've built up around your heart
I'll pick an emerald out
While the rest Falls apart
Another drunken post

Some say you're notches on the bed
But I'd say you're a cut in my heart
Each one of you leaves a scar
And the soul is bound and torn apart
I can't burden the weight
I can't carry you all with me
To end the strain
I'll sever my brain
And my love will release me

Forking tongues over breakfast
You take every bite
Not noticing the milk is sour

I saw her hands
Never her face
But I knew it all
And I would not replace, a thought in my mind of her face and her skin
Her nails were the bark of a mature oak
and her hair pre foliage
Many caverns and caves stretched from a finger, to gorges and trenches
And from that same hand I saw a blaze
The ashes, the burn of a smoldering stick
Never her face, with not my eyes
Her face I did see in my mind
From one hand, that reached into my soul
I saw her all
and all I knew

Poison
Stephen Norton Sep 2021
How dare you intrude on my heart
No warning, no progress, no way to start
Unwanted, forceful, unable to stop
You creep up slowly, with venomous eyes
I'm poisoned, your victim, leeching life
A word is a cure
A touch holds me over
Uncertainty is my lover
So certain I am
My fears given life

Window Shopping
Stephen Norton May 2019
It's not window shopping
I've passed by many times
The clerk knows my name
They've got my card on file
I've flirted with idea
But never make a purchase
Even with a lifetime warranty
That's a hell of a commitment
And pretty eyes catch pretty lies
What sprakles like jewels
plastic inside
Those thin veneers
Won't last for years
But look, it's on sale
I know it but it's tough
So tempting
But stop
Those eyes are glass
One swipe of a card
Could be your last

Stephen Norton Apr 2021
Fall into the water
A puddle, a mile to go
Sinking ever faster
Time passing slow
A sea of eccentricity
Of Uncertainty

Apprehension eased
Approaching bottom
The surface to a world forgotten
A stone staircase compells you
Descend

Every floor, a door to what could be
What could have been
Every possibility
Looking out on a relationship that never was
The dog you never had
The skill you never learned
Or an unforseen fad
Homeless
A billionaire
Hopeless
Dispear
A family
Alone
An artist
An accountant
A scientist
Or a poet

Ascend
Swim
Break the surface
Wake up

I'm a well adjusted maniac
Balancing life, mid panic attack
Frantically calm, repulse, attract
Kiss you
Shoot you in the face and laugh
Issue?
No I don't have any issues
Except for highlights and Hooked on Homicide
And subscriptions to prescriptions
For the conformally normal guy
Processing correctly

Stephen Norton Nov 2019
I greet the ocean daily
With many standing on its beaches
It welcomes me
We're all here for the same reason
The warm embrace of the sea
Sweet release
A constant yearning to be free
But as the years pass my toes sink more deeply
What seemed like fun eventually consumed me
All shores eroded till the water reached my brain
Sapping slowly my consciousness grain by grain
My mouth is full
I'm choking
But I'll probably do it again
Till the lights go out
Slowly
All potential lost without fame

I am not liked
I do not like you
I am a vistor
Walking through a human zoo
I observe your behaviors
I may think you are cute
But I cannot take you home
I'm alone
A species of one
Chemically controlled
I could be like you
Braindead and handfed
A vistor become prisoner
Please the many
Destroy the few
Instead I observe
Unbeholden to you

Hints of a smile

With tender love
We care

Drink until the scabs rub bare

It doesn't feel like it did before

But still I know it's there

Scar tissue tried forming

Never healed

The same old story

Year after year

Eyes dried

Skin tight

Waking upright

I guess I'm alive

The waves wash away the face
It's round and smooth
Developed a new shape

Bare, over a skipping stone

All that was etched on

Water
Stephen Norton Dec 2020
You make me water
Beholden to your shapes
Contorting to your wishes
But I will never change
Every piece of me you take
Leaves behind a stain
A soul cannot be stolen
Only shackled in place

This life is a tired metaphor
A broken road with holes
But forward I slump
Not knowing where to go
Time wasted meticulously
Shying away from the real me
Ripping me apart inside
Waiting on Serendipity

An artist drowned out
A bright light in a sea of stars
An audible voice in the choir
Whispering into the wind
Swallowed by the mire

You make me water
Restricted to this vessel
Freeze me up
Pour me out
Raise me up from the fire

Domesticated
Castrated
A Curious animal wandered the farm
Sacrificing limb to his Masters
To protect him from harm

They dined on his legs
He'd crawl from the barn to see the sky
Looking out on the horizon
Until they took his eyes

Now blind
He'd crawl out to feel the breeze
And smell the fragrances it carried
Till his head brushed up against the wood of the fence
The only thing keeping him confined

Without ears, all you hear is your heartbeat
Sniffing around for freedom
While the dog enjoys a new treat

They took his skin
But a will still remained
All the time in the world
But he couldn't identify a day
Immobile
Hollow sockets pointed upwards
Still dreaming
The sky
The horizon
Fading flesh
An Empty mind
A heart unbroken

Feast on this dream

Is it a filter that separates?
Color coded, packaged, secure
Instant defintion of a man
Classified, quantified, sure

Every word is proof
Our ears know this foul language
Their rags a mark
The emblems of a savage

I know my people
Kind, just, and polite
I know their kind
Evil, brutal, a blight

What filters the world?
What filters the flora and fauna?
What determines man from beast?
What defines our brother?
Who is ours?
And who is the other?
Is it language?
Is it color?
Is it age?
Is it culture?

Can a word sum up a man?
Does clothing speak?
Is an idea a mountain, from which you can see?
Can you pick out the tallest, and call him a tree?

Is it a filter that separates?
Color coded, packaged, secure
Instant defintion of a man
Classified, quantified, sure

An all seeing eye
Manually closed
Subduing consciousness
Chemically controlled

Cut off the flesh
Remove skin and bones
Open to the world
Reality exposed

**** all progress
Destroy what could be
Keep my eye shut
The possibilities blinding

Take the pain away
Coat my throat and my soul
The antidote stings
The duct overflowing and full
Never stop to listen or think
Wonder and peace lead to open eyes
Destructive tendencies lead to pleasant lies
Subduing conscious
Close my eye
Cut off from god
Earthly sacrifice
