love is not a safe word
it’s one haiku revised 400 times
on cracked leather chairs in the corner of cafés

some of us love badly
she says as she kisses the rim of her glass.
some of us love stretched out
like pizza dough that rips when our rolling pin rolls it too thin.

some of us love in secrecy
we do not trust your hands.
you try to pull our scalp off and draw your portrait on our mind

some of us love clean
like bubble bath that smells like lavender from some fancy store in the mall
some of us love *****
we cant clean you off our skin

some of us kiss with our teeth
some of us braid our lovers into our hair
and when we remove the hair tie
it is crimped and messy and tangled

some of us love love
but only far from home
when we slip into bed we start thinking
and we can’t stay still

some of us wash our clothes even when they don’t smell
or aren’t stained
just because it feels like you are inside of our shirts and pants and sneakers

some of us walk alone past your house
on the way to ours
and stop at the front step
waiting for you to come out
and smile at us
the only thing we wait for today
are the smudged signatures of snails
scrawled across your pavement

some of us love to the bone
until there are no more “ifs”
just “is” and “are”
the collected poems of our fingers
swollen, bruised, red like a bouquet of roses

some of us love
and we regret it
we never get home in time for dinner because of it, we leak like a faulty faucet, we sleep with our pillows over our heads to keep everything in
but some of us love
some of us own a watch and know the time with a glance at our wrist, some of us own a sponge to soak up the water, some of us own satin pillows that feel like whispers on our cheekbones

He did not deserve me-
Though he ended up with me, out of pure loneliness
On one end,
And horiness on the other-
He didn’t deserve me.
I am a strong and free woman,
Head held high,
Walking proudly through the crowd
Of judgement.
He wanted to cage me,
To tame me.
Maim me when I misspoke
With the ****** misconduct
Of his ****.
Left his mess for me to mop
And drug his palm against my face
When I didn’t do it quick enough.
I’m into some sick and twisted stuff,
But that doesn’t mean I have to dedicate my life
To a sick and twisted person.
He saw an opportunity and abused it,
Ruined a Led Zeppelin album
Because he needed quick pleasure.
A sin.
To me, it was torture
Beyond any measure.
There is no safeword to stop him
From using me that the repeated
Shouting of the word “no”
Shouldn’t override.
Sobs and dry heaving
And unlimited tears that darted down my cheeks
Every time he forced himself
Deeper inside of me
Couldn’t trump a measly “safeword”.
Sneering down at me,
Forcing my legs open
As he stole the one thing
I’d always asked him not to take away-
My trust in men as an entire gender.
And of course,
Something as simple as getting off quick
Could never seem that complicated,
That complex,
In his miniscule male mind.
He came and went-
Dipped to college,
Got with new girls after
Shaving his beard off once he left,
Revealing that he was still a boy
All along.
Under the dad *** of the year
And sneer that was covered
In ****** hair,
Starred a scared boy
Right back at me.
He drinks to numb his pain
While I’m back at home with
A broken liver.
And it’s more of a slap in the face
Than finding out earlier
That he was cheating on me
The entire time
More than the quick slaps
Across the face
I’d receive for
Disrespecting him.
He texts me-
On the day my crush,
My other half that I’ve yet to meet
Sends me an update on his life.
Cuffed in Mississippi
For a plant.
The same place my sister went
After getting strung out.
The place I was at
When my little survivor pup
Was hit by a pickup.
There’s nothing good
In the big Miss.
Only terrible roads and greasy food.
On the other end, the runaway ******
Was telling me he was trying to
“Better himself”.
Asked if we were okay,
And then proceeded to make the conversation
About himself,
As he’d proudly done so many times before.
How stealth-
Can’t find a better man, she lies.
Hands tied,
Just like i’d asked you to,
But more than that.
In my mind, as well.
You’ll rot in hell
For what you did to me.
No, I didn’t go after him.
No, I didn’t tell anyone at first.
No, I never told his college.
What the **** would you even go to college
In Ohio for?
No, I didn’t pursue him further after…
Karma is my friend.
And I have all the time in the world,
Curing myself,
Not drinking myself to death
And sleeping with every man
Big enough to swing his **** around.
I’m bettering myself, too.
Even if I’m not allowing him to see.

There are no ways to safeword out of this life.
I know, I’ve tried them all.
Elephant, apple, Alaska, amen.
Tried screaming anything into the pillow my face is pushed down into,
Whiskey, tango, foxtrot, stop
Exhausted my vocabulary against the blanket my fists are balled into fists against,
Anything to make the beatings stop
But they just
In ****, having a safeword is like wearing a seatbelt.
There are rules about having one
And the ones who choose to do without
Are taking risks.
We are born without lifejackets, without seatbelts and safecut scissors
Without breakaway glass or rubberized mats
Without any way to make the world slow down
Let us catch our breath,
And jump back in.
There are no hard limits in the real world.
So we bite into our gags and wait for the session to end.
Elephant, apple, Alaska, amen.

I don't wanna live in fear, I just wanna live to fly
I wanna live to be alive, I don't wanna live to die
Nobody's giving life away so stand up and take it
Go in with style and go out with a bang to face it
Come closer to the edge, I'll whisper sweet nothings
I'm a poet for a dollar and a legend for a hundred

When the battles tear through dawn and the wars wage at dusk
When you don't keep the cure but take hits from the Boss
Fingers in the shape guns, mouths in the shape of lies
Laugh and go in swinging just to come out half-blind
Heaven is a tunnel lined with wishes and convenience
On the fence for a God that doesn't exist 'til you need him

When you're running a dirt revolution, sidestepping the laws
When some say you're the solution, others claim you're the cause
Push the boundaries of harlots and freelance politicians
So much to gain from a new age, the same is true of wisdom
If a hurricane could speak, it'd scream your name before the fall
If you're going in to feel something, you might as well feel it all

When you can't see yourself 'til someone else holds the mirror
When you're drowning in an inch of water 'til it's never been clearer
And all this time lulls, ages, withers down to the unknown
A dying pulse flittering beneath flesh, bruising against bone
Count your blessings sevenfold, a false muse makes pages burn
Remember that which kills you, forget what you need to learn

When you cling to the hope that every cell on the surface will be lost
When the water cleans the beauty within, never much for naught
Normalcy is just a safeword for when you can't look beyond the sun
Peace of mind comes with the season, so hit the ground and run
Say your ends justify your means; say the means are understood
But if there's no evil to consider, what's the definition of good?

I don't wanna live in fear, I just wanna live my life
I wanna live to be alive, so I'm gonna take a ride
I'm caught between loving and not loving enough,
Caught between not caring and caring too much
It's a game of rolling dice and writing your own lines
It's easier to say the words than to take your own advice
there are a couple of lines in here from my other poem 'electric blue'. i rarely recycle work but i really love those lines and they seemed fitting.

most of the angels avert their gaze
a few stare, their glares embedded
in my bare chest and just one
watches quietly from the corner

what would Judas think about
the scarves? one wrapped around
my wrists and the other around
my eyes with my teeth clenched

my back is arched above the
towel you put on your sheets just
in case. did jesus ever think about
his safeword as he hung on the cross?

‘Do you like that?’ whispers Pontius Pilate
gasping I respond, ‘Yes sir,’

i loved you.

i loved you and you touched my shoulders and you didn't know.

our safeword should've been love.

after all, it's something we never had, right?

we're a natural disaster, baby.

wanna see how many people we can ****?
- live to see their likeness set in stone.
(what does that make me?)

I'm a ******* trophy, and I don't need a safeword
because intimacy is a waste of my time if
I don't feel like I can't breathe at least once
Sure I'll say but my face will be the same color as my blood
or my favourite lipstick
Wear me around his neck if he could
I know, he told me
I love you beyond the moaning, I do
that's not all there is to me
How many times do I have to say it now?
I don't start fires, I am the fire
Love won't die unless you ****** it
and I don't believe in violence
Gasoline veins since birth so the right person
could throw a match on me
so throw a match on me, I know it's you
Have you ever tried swimming with your arms
tied behind your back, that's how you make me feel sometimes
People would love to identify my body at the morgue
especially the ones who put it there
someone already tried to put it there
but no one wants to hold a dead thing
