will is willing
his body is not
thrills
  come vicariously, now.

One smile away from happy
will, is
stepping into posterity.

will is long ago,
born on the tired years of working,
his body is tired.

will, still, sees hope
on the smile of posies
who take the time
to notice.

Dying slow in the mountains seemed much easier than simply breathing at sea level.

I've been thinking that maybe I was happier when I was still drinking.

I tried to write a poem called Pointless and never made it beyond the title.

Dying seems easier than breathing at sea level.

The Perfect Combination

A-1 on your sirloin
Butter on your bread
Chocolate on your ice cream
Or butterscotch instead

Cream cheese on your bagels
Jelly on your toast
Maybe peanut butter
Which do you like the most

Salsa for tamales
Lemon for your fish
Onion dip for vegetables
Delicious on your dish

Pinto beans in chili
Carrots cooked in stew
Bacon on your meatloaf
Chicken cordon bleu

Chives on your potato
Sugar in your tea
Pickles on your burger
Crackers for your cheese

Garlic for your pasta
Sauce upon it too
Milk poured in your cereal
Slices of fresh fruit

Gravy on your biscuits
Sausage would be nice
Cocktail sauce for jumbo shrimp
In a bowl with ice

Syrup on your pancakes
Frosting on your cake
Cream upon your peaches
A salt and pepper shake

Caramel on your apples
Seafood and white wine
Cottage cheese upon your pears
It’s so much fun to dine

Mayo on your sandwich
Ketchup on your fries
Dressing on your salad
Whipped cream on your pies

So many combinations
That we see each day
When we’re having dinner
Breakfast, lunch or play

To enhance each other
Nothing left to waste
Flavors come together
In the name of taste

There’s one combination
The best one I can see
Not to do with eating
Because it’s you and me

So perfect now together
Like ham on top of cheese
Lettuce and tomato
Onions in your peas

Wonderful together
Sometimes sweet or ****
Soft and always tender
This love inside our hearts

Of all the perfect pairings
Only one will do
This combination built on love
Forever me and you
A little Saturday fun.

Poetic T
I walked on your words
With each step was trust that I
Walked what ever word was truth.
But then the floor did feel
Rough
Jagged
Tainted
As though words  spoke were
Not a lie, but not the truth in my eyes.
I walked on your words
Each day, till the moment
When my soul was cut under foot.
Each step I took, my feet got worse
Till your words were like
Jagged glass under foot.
Where once there was truth
That I walked on,
What was meant to be trust
Has left me with
Cuts,
Abrasions,
Bruises
Upon my soul, I bleed as
Your lies cut deep.
I used to walk on your words,
But now I have walked away from you,
As those cuts that bleed my soul just cut to deep.
I dipped my toe
in the inviting shallowness of the creek.

her muddy water
gurgled in joy

she stoked the fire of my desire

wove me dreams
with moonbeams

and I waded far on her

till the water rose
above my nose

death seemed close and nigh.

I didn’t die

drifted away on her

going stronger
growing weaker.

(so they say once you dip your toe
soon lose your way
in the muddy creek’s flow
)
the rooks glare at him
his pawns are all dead
on his neck roars the queen
crown trembles on his head!

smells his fall the neighing knight
hangs on thread his fate
crown would go and so his might
war over the bishops trumpet!

his army of pawns are nowhere seen
the king feels so alone
his chosen war he failed to win
about time he leaves the throne!

victory at last the pieces sing
we have the king checkmate
behind the new face the same old king
readies to wear the crown’s weight!

your boot was turned the wrong way
on the post out by the highway
- sharp toe pointing to the south
away from where you've been

you're no stranger to the rangers
living dangerously on the edge
- sidewinders in the sagebrush
whispering to the wind

the anasazi built this home
stacking stone one by one
- far above the canyon
of petroglyphs and wrens

i knew i'd find you by the fire
talking to the ghosts of smoke and drum
- in the ruins above the dunes
reminiscing with your friends

- reminiscing, reminiscing
on the blue mesa.

Who cares
What path was taken?
What words were spoken?
What hearts were broken?
Who cares
What lies were told?
What truths were bold?
What beliefs were shaken?
Who cares
What road was chosen?
What mode of transport?
Or even what prize was sort?
We all end up in the same place
with the same certainty
and even the same face.
We all arrive at different times,
we go down with no sound,
into a ground,
so recently

before the last breath I ask am I forgivable?
I in strength forgave those who laughed
i in weak times spat in their face
I was formidable in me.
I saw beauty, I played the recess with melody,
i forsook those who loved me. I gave, at
times what I did not have, I shared tears and cried and felt.
I carried those who could not walk.
Then, they carried me.
I fell down, got up. I went down to the valleys,
up  the hills,
played when I should have been working.
Lost I was most of life. I never lied down.
I had red in my veins, given by destiny, terrors at night,
visions. Deciding was hard, to be me.
I share with you my inner self
honestly.

The whippoorwhil
endlessly chants her rhythm:
into boughs of leaves
making the pecan trees sway,
begins the dancing-
on the wind:
playing a faint flute,
clapping doves, sit and watch and coo,
all this gaiety to do:
this wind song is beautiful,
I think of you.
If I say
I don’t believe in God
I would be incurring enemies.

God wouldn’t be one of them.

They came down the shining mountain slopes
In robes of reds and golds
Moving lightly on their dancing feet
Their happy laughter filled the air

Along the forest paths came others of their kind
Dressed in robes of russet green
Singing the sweetest kind of songs

All gathered in the sunlit glade
Beside the crystal stream
Then accompanied by golden harps
The elven host began to sing

They sang of past winters vicious bite
Sang of the beauty that was spring
The sweetest songs of midsummers day
And of the bounty autumn then would bring

Garlands of wild flowers
Were twisted in their hair
And the songs of birds and insects
Reverberated in the air

Honey cakes were eaten
Horns of mead were drunk
For some the water of the crystal stream
Was used their thirst to quench

Long into the evening
They danced and sang their songs
Now the glade was lit by fireflies
Dancing to the harpen strum

Suddenly came silence
Suddenly the elven folk were gone
Suddenly they had all slipped away
Midsummer day was done

i see a fire in the sky above the pines
on the side of the house
this early morning

and on the front
the water is burning -
burning

i used to go to work in the dark
before the time changed - affirming
and conforming

the radio man recites last night's results -
a new day has dawned
- it will be long and disconcerting

there is a fire in the sky above the pines -
and on the front
the water is burning

- burning.
