Thine eyes
Were simply
Two pools of midnight
In which I'd stray
To heaven's celestial shores

 Jun 2016 A Psalmist
Terry Lausch
yesterday I met with an old friend
the Apothecary
who I met 7,000 years ago
we talked & laughed for awhile
remembering old times
times we almost died
in the courts of Kings & Queens
after some time & the moon settled over the horizon
I asked him for what I came for
to prepare for me the perfumes of Arabia
7 for you
& one for me
he paused for awhile & then laughed
forgetting this meant putting his life at risk
but he agreed, as old friends do
to make me perfumes from the tales of the Nights
7 for you
& one for me
It took him awhile to remember
everything he needed to perform this Art
but soon he remembered, every detail & every word
the incantations & precious stones
the name of a princess & the Jinn
the serpent flowers & the moon fire
7 for you
& one for me
the perfumes of Arabia
& my friend the Apothecary
who I met 7,000 years ago
( he remembers you too )
I get so tired of you,
who use your voice
without first understanding that it is a choice.
When you speak,
you're obliged to handle with care
the words and the feelings
thrown out to the air.

Do you even know the language at all?
I do not think you do.
If so, how can such a waste of words occur
among the literate lucky few?

Words can weave the truth of the past
upon the present's very soul.
Yet, here you stand
with pen in hand,
unaware of your part in the whole.

No, I do not believe
you even know
where words come from at all.
They are not yours.
You did not make them.
You merely use them as you scrawl.

They are ancient spirits;
unchanged and unspoken,
breathed by men
more witted and wiser then you.
Please cease your distraction
before they are broken.
Their meaning too meaningful
to be fooled with by you.

And here I do tell you,
please hear what I mean;
If the words they elude you, as if too Byzantine,
then just give up from the start,
for only the wisest of hearts
can ever know love
and how it came to mean.

This notion absurd
goes beyond written word,
and it is here that you must understand me.
For only by meaning alone
can words ever atone
for the confusionĀ in heart's understanding.

Where did it begin
and who is its author?
These things,
please let me explain.
For I have been at study;
My heart battered and ******
and my pen
now broken in twain.
part of a larger piece i'm working on
the way your eyes light up
the way you say my name
something about you makes me feel so safe
your hand in mine
locked and intertwined
face to face
my favorite place
the trace of your hand upon my skin
breathe in
breathe out
letting every moment sink in
your heart beat against mine
the reassuring factor that everything is fine
when I pull you tighter
I can't get close enough
so darling look in my eyes
we don't have to make everything so tough
there doesn't have to be broken pieces
we'll build from the ground up
this too shall pass
so let's hold fast
to everything we know
we'll grow up
we'll grow old
and still
I will love your heart of gold
