I saw our moon die last night
my love
you were away.

I cried alone
before digging a grave.

At dawn, I pretended
that you missed me
and called  your name.

I must have cried so loud
a little bird from unknown skies
tried to console me
perched on the window sill
next to our bed.

Your space still empty
the moon still dead
and the bird chirped
the saddest song
my ears have heard at dawn.
These are the rules of the game:
You may say what you like
provided it is not serious.
You may say something serious
if your tone is flippant.
You may say something flippant
in a serious tone.
You may even say something serious
in a serious tone,
so long as you exaggerate just enough
to show that you do not mean it,
or to imply that you would mean it if ....
(without supplying the condition,
even in your own mind).
If you mean what you say
you must not let anyone know that you mean it.
If you say something you mean,
and if it becomes known that you mean it,
it is no longer the same game.
It may not even be a game at all.

But did you mean it?
did you? like that, I mean,
did you really mean it?
What you said was nothing,
really nothing at all,
unless you meant it.
It's just that ever since then
there is a hollow inside me.
You can fill it so easily.
Tell me you didn't mean to hurt,
but only if you mean it.
The cinnamon smells
better than it tastes, although
so do you, my love.
We can be deep,
alone in a silent world;
or distant,
wishing upon a star;
but when we come together
as a community,
whether in mourning
over the loss of someone who touched us all
or to share the joy of the insular world of music,
where those who plot to save us
with the clever comfort of fear cannot penetrate,
it is there where we can see the promise of love;
unconditional;
a smile for a stranger without expectation;
a man and a woman dancing together
without remorse or confusion;
go there,
take it with you,
it means something
and it exists already in your consciousness,
in the unseen world of your being,
where your feelings live,
always in need of a friend
