Light casting shadows
On darkened walks
Making one larger
Then life
Could be eerie
Depending on where
You stand

The Five Foolish Virgins
Mary Anne Norton Nov 2020
If I were at the
Wedding Feast
Would I have
Brought enough
Oil
For my lamp
Or have to go
To the market place
To get more oil
And miss the
Wedding Banquet
Would I have
Shared my oil
Will I be locked
Out
Come Judgement Day
I need to be ready
All the time
The real question
Am I ready

Now
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Now
Now is the time
When words flow
In my head
Paper is ready
Pen standing near
I'm not prepared
To write
Would much rather
Visit the.Land
Of Nod
And stay
Until Morn
Where I can
Wake up refreshed
And ready to
Begin anew
Let thoughts collect
And gather to make sense

My sister works
All day
Comes home
And works
All night
She helps others
In the day
To turn right around
Helping others
At night
Though it's hard
For.you  lying there
Doing nothing
For no one

Words
Mary Anne Norton Jul 2020
Words racing through
My scattered brain
Words lain askew
Amidst my other thoughts
They fly at me
When unprepared to pen
So I carry a napkin
Or two
And write. Lightly
Not to rip my thoughts
To many.pieces
Or leave ink spots
On my hands

Time to settle down

How do you cover
Up words
Waiting to be
Exposed
Hide the
Paper
Toss the
Pen
Turn off
The light and
Say
AMEN

Today
For someone who lost
A friend  family  member
To covid
Though that place
Can never be filled
May. Memories of
Gentle love
Warm your
Saddened hearts
And may their light
Burn brightly
In your
Broken heart
No it doesn't
Make any sense
And it never will
But angels will
Now fly above and
Within you
To lighten your step
Hang on as you
Soar among.
Heaven's own

Rain
Mary Anne Norton Nov 2020
The sky pouring
Down tears
To wash the earth
Free of its' sins
Harder and harder
It falls
For a deep cleansing
Nothing seems to
Make the filth
Disappear
Just when the rain
Seems like it
Will never
Go away
The Son comes
Shining through

Poetry
Mary Anne Norton Sep 2020
look at the word poetry
Poet try
How often have I tried
Placing words from
Deep within to the butcher block
Where unwanted words
Are hacked off
And with the remainder
Try to make sense at
What lies before me
Sparing no parts
I sharpen my pencil
Hurriedly grab some paper
Before  my thoughts
Get caught up in the netherworld

The Unveiling
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
The tree has undressed
For winter
Leaving scattered colors
Of.reds.and gold and
Yellows
Scattered on the
Ground
She is exposing
Herself to.
Winter's  chill
Perhaps like us
When we expose
Our nakedness
In words
We too feel chill
Or.even warmth
Do we take cover
Or spread
The words around

You/ me
Mary Anne Norton Sep 2020
I look at your
Nail driven hands
And feet
Did they think you
Would escape
With whipped legs
And back
The crown You wore
Not of diamonds
But spikes
Driven into your head
Your face unrecognizable
From welts and spit
You hung with  love
So deep that
It lasts for eternity
Into your hands
I commend my Spirit
And may I do the same
With your dying
Love for me

New words
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
The wordsjust flowed
From your mouth
Like a poet's
Dream
And a song of
Bird
Words too strong
To bury inside
A seed to plant
And let it grow
Whatever happens
It just can't die
Take time to
Think it through
No one can create it
But you
You alone have the flow
So with deep thoughts
Let it go
Out into the
Atmosphere
Where you wait
No more

Tears
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
So happy to hear you laugh
After all the tears
That you shed
Oceans and oceans
Of tears
Tossing over me
Tried wiping away
Another wave came
If I were the sun
I'd dry them away
Perhaps if I dance
On my head
And fall to the ground
I'll get a giggle or two
Luckily I won't
Have to
But I would
But I won't
Because I just
Heard you laugh
So hard to see someone cry especially when
You really can't do anything

The Showdown
Mary Anne Norton Nov 2020
In baby blue morning sky
Ready for a showdown
Were sun and moon
Both at opposite ends
Of the spectrum
Waiting.to begin
The sun heated up
Sent warm rays to
The stirring and sleeping
While a glorious white
Circular shadow. Held her
Distance
To the unsuspecting world
As the sun grew brighter
The moon disappeared
Into the sky
See you tonight sun
As I brighten your way
See.you tomorrow moon
As I brighten your way
When I took my morning walk the sun was behind me with her warmth  in front of me
The moon full and shadowy white
Such a beautiful sight that does not happen often .Amazing

Enough to make

It's  Friday the
End of my week
The end of
My song
Did I hit the
High notes
Perhaps brightening
Someone's Life
Or did I hit
Low notes
Just stay by
Myself
Was I in harmony
With the world
Or let it pass by
Did I sing.the
Right tunes
To move someone
Or just play a
Solo for me
I hope I composed
A symphony
Where everyone
Joins in
And we can all
Say Bravo

Dreamt I had no teeth
Woke up startled
Bit down making sure
They were there
Yes they were
None had fallen out
Or disappeared
Got me to thinkin
What if it were true
Who could I talk to
Could God hear my Prayers
How could I shout
Out for joy
Or scream and holler
And even whisper
Wow what about food
Crunchy chicken mashed potatoes
Homemade cookies or pie
Even homemade soup
A salad and fruit
Ran downstairs for hot tea
And marmalade toast
Had to get a pen
To write out a poem
And then say oh look
It's a covid nightmare
Luckily this was all a nightmare
None of this happened
I heard someone say on the radio they
Were having nightmares
Or corona dreams

Words
Mary Anne Norton Aug 2020
Words are the heartbeat
Of the soul
The breath of
One's breathing
Soft whispers can heal
Angry words can destroy
One can build up
Or rip apart
Queens and kings can
Surely be born
Or paupers slowly
Left to die
We can build one
A kingdom of dignity
Or a dungeon
Of self disgust
Its up to how
We will use
The language of words

Watch what comes from
Your mouth
Your words
Could bring sunshine
To a lost soul
Or damage
Someone for Life
Words can sting
And venom from
Them
Could cause even
Death
Choose words wisely
As you've probably heard
If you can't say
Something nice
Don't say it
At all
Too many people
Have been.buried
In words
Saw one ******* TV  crying because she had been bullied by words the pain will never go away some people have killed themselves because they could stand the pain no longer too all those who have been
hurt you are loved

Perfume
Mary Anne Norton Oct 2020
Walking through the store
Perfume permeates the air
Leaving traces of where
Last you were
I follow the scent
Imagining
Pasta con broccoli
Creamy homemade sauce
Garlic bread sticks
Red wine uncorked
Chocolates to melt
In your mouth
But then my thoughts
Wandered no more
I was in the diaper aisle
The beauty of poetry you can make up thoughts and write about whatever you want real or imagined. Poems are what .you make of them.
