The dogs barked
The air was chilled the moon lite so brightly
and the silence quite deafening
Until the dogs barked

What followed the sound of the sirens
left the scars you see today
in the now old happy people

War was so far away
friends met at the cinemas
laughter filled the pubs
and mothers rocked their children to sleep

The city was lit up
by the bombers drone
the screams that scarred our now old happy people
with memories only time can soothe

In the distance an angle of death appeared
floating gently down to earth
the ground violently shook as the past were
awoken from their death
rest in peace were the last words spoken

The great Llandaff Cathedral lying next to them
smouldered with dust
the birds in the belfry deprived of a home
the pews full again as so often were
but this time with grief not happiness

Guided home by the light of the moon
men cheered
Heim, ein guter Arbeitstag

June the 19th 1940
War came to our Capital
January 02nd 1941
It left a stench that awoke the dead
the scars will be guarded forever

Is there time to think?
I thought about time

But it quickly passed me by

Before I could think again

It was time for me to die
We rode in on white shire horses, maybe a few days late
Buried in surf where we lay, twas a poet’s fate

On a leisurely journey we caught a big squall
Now I’m singing my words in the great poet’s hall

Your pilgrimage is touching, your journey not at an end
I see my sonnets and stanzas have become your best friend

Read to me lovingly on the surf now covered with sand
We’ll walk barefooted, together, cradled, hand in hand

My words on your lips, will at last set me free
Please read them aloud, as I ebb back out to sea

Alla prossima, I’ll be waiting! if I’m just out of reach?
Speak my words as your walking on Via Reggio beach

The lies he told
As I look into those eyes
Like a tinted mirror so many lies
The horrors that now invade my mind
Peace and forgiveness is hard to find

Then when that poignant question's asked
You smile through your venetian mask
I'm sorry I don't know what to say
A week last Friday, I was out that day

I stepped closer and looked into his eyes
May god forgive you for those lies

the sun set and the starts glistened upon your soul

I met a man who said I was going to sea
He was 18 stone and about 6 foot 3

As I was thinking what to wear

My mate butted in and said we'll see sunny
The big bloke smiled

I thought sun glasses and a hat then

As the ambulance pulled up I said to the big man
text me the time we set sail

He looked confused and got a bit shirty

I helped my mate to his feet and said
I think the trip is off

He looked confused

I just smiled and said we'll see
The sad old man walked down the rickety road
his path was blocked by an angry toad
and a Japanese lady sat on a commode
on a great white stallion she rode

So he checked his bag of therapeutic ****
note said only take if you feel the need
should have read that before he did concede
on his bag of munchies he did feed

The picnic and the flask
Drinking a cup of tea from a flask

Has now become a monumental task

While wearing a face mask

You see help I cannot ask

While helpers hover 2 meters away from my flask
I wondered lonely in a shroud
Until the gates drew open and I heard out aloud
Welcome sinner, are you proud of what you’ve achieved
I felt a sneeze coming so I but my head in my sleeve
Don’t hide your face I know what you’ve done
Debauchery, theft and far too much fun
Forgive me I said please forgive me my sin
That’s more like it, close the gates on the way in
I was greeted by associates, lovers, and a rat of a smell
This cannot be heaven, dam, it must be hell
I walked freely
every step meticulously measured
head in the clouds
feet always in the centre of my
granite paver
if not it's unlucky, they say
I caught your smile
invading my eyes
I think I smiled
then I felt the edge
so sharp under my plimsolls
my knees buckled as I
fell over the edge
falling, falling
then the pain as you clasped me
and brought me to my feet
ouch I cried
we smiled
as we stood on the edges of my world
we shuffled to the centre
together

Magical Night
The winter hare twitched his nose
at the jingling of bells in the distance
A robin sat on a bush watching
a sleigh take to the sky pulled by reindeers, one with a red nose
And the crow sat high in a tree puzzling over
a happy old man trying to squeeze down a chimney
The children slept
as the snowflakes fell

Happy Christmas everyone

When the music takes you to new heights
you'll hover over mountains to marvel at the sight
Then a cord change takes you through fields of corn
watch the sunrise and dream of the new dawn
The strings lift you higher than ever before
as you find yourself peering at heavens door
Till the cello grounds you with its deep low base
as you fly off to the depths of space
Then as your eye slowly open and your senses come to land
you find you are guiding the music with the wave of your hand

The night elves
When the moon is lost in a cloudless sky
Be aware it's the time that the night elves fly

They hover at each house as our children sleep
In search of the sweet dreams of our children to reap

Our duty of care is to secure the windows closed tight
Or our children's sweet dreams may be lost to the night

So guard your children's dreams from the thief of the night
Until the opening of dawn at the breaking of light

The tide turns
As the waves roll in bringing more and more
we sit there shaking our heads tutting
muttering, why isn't someone doing anything
As the waves roll in
We listen to their promises again and again
shaking our heads
muttering
As the waves roll in, the tide turns
We pack our bags and leave the land of our fathers
for a new world a better life
now we become refuges
Waiting for the waves to roll in, waiting
I don't know how to say this, but, you know!
He said, as my stomach tightened
May be we should have a break?
He said, as my hands lifted out of my pockets.
It will be good for us, don't you think!?
He said, as a smirk broadened my face.
What do you think. He said,??
F* off I said
So, he did
And he was right, I feel great!

My old mates
I sit in my pub snug, and I wait for my mates to arrive
For a year I've not heard or seen them, I hope their alive

The first taste of my beer is like my coming of age
Like the rest of my life as I turn a new page

I've been in isolation I've been lost and then found
On many occasions I'd thought I'd be deep underground

So, I smile at the new regulars they smile at me back
So nice to see you, as they pat my frail back

Alone I still sit, sad my mates never came
I sigh, as I supped, my life will never be the same

"Bartender" another beer to help this old man survive
As he sat and he waited for his mates to arrive
The end of lockdown, but not the end.

Picking up the pieces
My tears still tumble
Like falling leaves in autumn sun
My life is not over
Its only just begun
I walked the jagged rocks
choosing my path
the wind howled
the surf rose
as I carefully made my way
a voice called me to an easier path
honest, trust me it said
I walked the jagged rocks
confident in my choices
the rocks turned to sand
the sand turned to fields of grass
as I made my way home

Destiny
A weeping angel
Watches over me
Why?
We all plea for life's equality
all the races of our world
It's not the colour of our skin that cripples us
or the boarders from within
It's the greed of the men who steels from us
and they're quest to rule our world
He knows we'll never meet our neighbours
will we ever cross that line
Come let us sing our song

So our destiny lays with our masters
but we just don't have the time
We prey to the gods they've made for us
so our mind can wonder free
In the hope that he will listen
and give us back some digenite

Come let us sing our song
the song for freedom
redemption song
Ye, been listening to Bob Marley tonight.

I smelt you on his collar when he came home late from work
Your name is on his texts, he laughs, then eyes me with a smirk
I look at him and smile but think, O what a F** ****
I can't wait until the morning when I pack him back off to work

He shouts I'll see you later honey, but I may be late
My bags are packed the taxis here I'm off to meet my fate
He came home to silence, eyes wide open as he closed the gate
I'm not home honey, neither were you and I just couldn't wait

Time is called
The fires are burning brightly in the little stone cottages of this dying village.
After their last day at work, the men walk the cobble stones for the last time.
With news to share with their families, some pause at the local inn to contemplate.

The rain falls and the children huddle around the bright burning coal fire hacked from the face by their father.
Waiting for his smile to round the door and supper to be served.

The ****** blows for the last time, as a miners sit sipping their ale thinking of the men and boys left to haunt the empty tram ways and coal faces.
Do they feel lucky, not tonight, just betrayed and alone?

Time to think, LD
Have you noticed the sound of the trees
when the wind blows through the leaves?
The road with no cars?
Or so many different birds whistling their song?
And the robin watching you move your garden pots
Waiting for a treat.
Or counting the buds on your poppy plant,
the smell of your flowers, as they call to the bees
and pass on their love.

Or the chair in your garden
waiting for the sun,
next to the table with your favourite book.
And the peace you find
when sat in your chair thinking of your day,
as you marvel at the beauty,
and wonder why it has past you by, until now.

Retirement
Well I've walked the dog and patted the cat
Washed the dishes and hoovered the mat

Broke up the crusts a feast for the birds
Finished the crossword with all the wrong words

Screamed at the squirrels who ate all the bread
Sat on the sofa I think I'm ready for bed

Checked all my emails and texts on the phone
Now it's time to get tea ready for when the misses comes home

What a day:)

Dodgy part of town
I saw the scar trail across his face
His eyes pierced my brain as he held out his hand
Fear crept over me my heart started to race
He asked me something I didn’t understand

A pound please, Sir, so I may eat
I steadied myself and brushed fear down
I’ve hit hard times, I’m on the street
You see I’m from the other side of town

I wanted to help but I walked away
I could feel his eyes and heard his spit hit the ground
I dropped him a pound and heard him say
Thank you, Sir, maybe I'll see you around

Today or maybe tomorrow
The Eastern world it is exploding,
cinders blowing in the wind, glowing at the rising sun.

To the sound of silence screaming its pain at the emptiness,
that was once our pride.

I gaze beyond the raging sea,
as the darkness comes and signals the end of our time.

On the eve of our destruction,
poets still write words that no one will hear, of love, life and Armageddon

Our light fades as the pen reaches the end of the page.
The book is closed.

Lights out
The sparrow sang for breakfast
The robin sang for tea
Death by misadventure
The jailer holds the key

The jackdaw sang for supper
The nightingale at midnight
The major sips his sherry
The conscripts fight the fight

Then as the sun rises
The day begins again
The salmon swim in the rivers
The grouse nest in the glen

So, as you try to wonder
What this poem's all about
If you are the last to leave
Please switch the lights out

Today
I woke up in the morning and I said to myself
Today it’s gonna be today
So, I looked in the mirror with a sparkling smile
And I said to myself
Today it’s gonna be today
Clicked my heels as I ran out of the door
And I said to myself
Today it’s gonna be today

So, I pushed the door open
and the smile on her face said
Today it’s gonna be today
A deep breath taken
and I blurted out the words
the whole shop shouted
Today he’s gone and done it today

So, if you have something
You should have said
I think you know
Today it’s gonna be today

The electrics gone off the worlds come to an end
The web is no more Emails I can’t send

I’ve pushed all the switches still nothing can I hear
The streets are full of people their lives are a blur

A thought has just occurred I scream and I gasp
I can boil water on the stove and make tea in a flask

But wait!

My washing machines in a spin and the TV’s back on
The kettles start’s boiling to a radio song

The web is now working Emails I can send
Hold the headlines, the worlds not come to an end
What about electric cars?
I ponder how long I will sit in your chair
As I lift my right hand and let it run through my hair.

Your concentration is attached to your computer screen
As I study with disdain at your office colour scheme.

I shuffle my seat and aim a smiling glare
Just a reminder that I'm still sat there

You click BUY, to late with a sigh and a yelp
Then look at me with a smile, and say how can I help

I ponder the question, do you really give a ****?
I say, thanks very much I don't think you can

The empty picnic table
A light wind picked up and carried leftover crumbs, gently laying them on a crisp brown sycamore leaf

The ants were busy carrying away bits of sausage, rolled in pastry which flaked off as they ran

A robin watched on excitedly until a squirrel grabbed the sausage roll and stuffed it in his cheek

Not despondent the ants spied the sycamore leaf and its contents

Remains of a ham and cheese sandwich flew in the magpies mouth to the nearest branch

The robin amused itself by watching a sycamore leaf racing across the grass before it finished off the fallen pastry flakes

The picnic table was now empty
The stories they told on that
wine fuelled night
brought laughter brought joy
of the reddened faces
of the stories told

Next day the quiet lambs
gathered for coffee
lots of coffee and hope
that the wine had done its job
to the temporal lobe

But there is always one
who keeps a diary
updated before sleep
a reminder of the truth
bursting from their freed consciousness

But the rules of the tour
are simple
what goes on tour
stays on tour
Really????? Yep!
They left it in lines of freshly cut hay
The workmen, over the playing fields today

Some love the smell as it floats in the air
The dogs nose right through it but there is nothing there

In some in brings tears to the eyes and gentle sneeze
A cough or a croak or a chesty wheeze

I love the smell of freshly cut grass
Getting closer to normality

Trampled
I will rise
Cutdown
I will re-grow
Scorched
I will survive
Chewed
I will nourish

I am the meadows
I am the fields
I am your children’s playground
I am your yoga mat
I am the oxygen you breath

I am grass
Just one of Mother natures
And the rain fell
as I looked out the window
Fluffed up birds were dancing around the pots
Gold fish were racing around the pond
and the flowers bathed
More rain fell and I smiled
and made a Smiley face on the window pane
put my head on the window sill
and fell asleep
I dreamed of being on holidays
laying in the sun
drinking wine and watching the children
dancing to the music
then racing around the pool
as I bathed in the sun shine
and fell asleep
I dreamed I was sitting at my window
watching the rain

Mum in the garden
The poppies have bloomed, but now their dead
They'll come back next year, Mum said
Their petals have fallen on a rose buds head
The stamen is the male reproductive *****, Mum said
"Yuck"! I'm nearly ready for bed

Rose buds are filling and ready to bloom
Mum said, not ready yet, but will be soon
Why is there thorns on that long green?--Stem
Mum said, so nothing can damage them

I said, Mum, how can there be so much happiness in such a small space
When I grow up I'll be a big poppy, so full of grace
Or a bee on the grid, in a big bee race

Mum looked at me and shrugged, and here's what she said
I do believe darling, it's time for your bed
Good night!
