Medgar Wiley Evers, a name strong and powerful
The college, a mission of knowledge, Understanding and Education excellence
The beauty of essence
CUNY Medgar Evers College being my discovery
Yes this is the story
Medgar Evers College showed me the way in being the person I was seeking and supposed to be
I became the graduate the world did see
I was a truly believer in Evers Teachings
It was the transformation enhancement of the Medgar Evers College uplift
Coming to Medgar Evers College was the balance of what can be achieved and the offset of Social Justice
I learned knowing where I belong
Being prepared for the challenge in getting along
Yet, Medgar Evers College enriched my educational soul like an upgraded electronic component
Stand on purpose with a mission in mine
Set the standards while drawing the line
The discovery of Medgar Evers College was my own exploration
I was on the launching pad, but aimed with the foundation of learning being success
Being my MEC alumni was my honor and privilege of appreciation
Many said I was not college material
But Medgar Evers College changed that into “I was Capable”
Destiny was in my corner because of Medgar Evers College efforts
So Medgar Evers College fulfilled me in being one of their many products for success and beyond
Words can be expressed, but understanding must be an answer. Medgar Evers College showed my own elevation into education as an open door. I entered and was enriched with instilling self-esteem in every way. Medgar Evers College objective was my take away of always remember and don’t forget.”

It was the 46th Commencement at CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE
I graduated in the year 1981 and I am an ALUMNI
How times flies oh my
I was a treated like a VIP throughout
Reserved seating in what I am talking about
All the Speakers and Keynote Speaker had inspiration to shout
The graduates where given encouragement going beyond
Medgar Wiley Evers legacy to look upon
Inspiration to step out and let your involvement take flight
You got the education, but don’t sit back and take it light
CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE is on the move
Pure academics CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE will continue to prove
The history the college has maintained
In my heart the legacy will remain
Being an ALUMNI thought, I am part of CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE’S HISTORY
A part of the vision is that all graduates will accomplish
They came from a college that is very distinguished
But the college is continuing to be on the move
A New School being Urban Development
So MEDGAR WILEY EVERS is looking down and feeling proud
His spirit feels the welcome and his honor allowed
I was moved in seeing all the graduates
A tear came to my eye
I see a question being why?
It was for sadness, but joy in seeing the Men and Women achieving, and I was so proud
CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE, you did it again
Another group of graduates with concentration being CUNY Medgar Evers College to mention
Now wait for new Freshmen again, and another graduating class having a future commencement that will begin
Carry on CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE
Lift every voice and sing, but always remember one thing
“Your voice has a choice, but footsteps always need movement. Be assured with confidence. Have no fear as the Lord is always near. Medgar Wiley Evers legacy left his vision that will help you preserver”.

The man being Medgar Wiley Evers
His voice with Civil Rights Decree
It was Civil Rights awareness to the world to see
Medgar Evers being of outraged spoken words
Truth in needing to heard
His philosophy extending into expression becoming a lesson
But let me relate to Medgar Evers in education
I had the honor, privilege and opportunity to attend CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE
The principles with Civil Rights concentrating on education being a Constitutional right
The message being “Higher Learning in Excel at any Race”

Meet education face to face
Don’t let your mind just go to waste
Gold is only a camouflage shine
What’s true within the heart having determination and desire in helping others regardless of race in bringing out one’s true potential in looking beyond the color of one’s skin
This is not something accidental
It is not something seasonal
It’s a chosen right
This was the reason in the Civil Rights fight
Medgar Evers saw the flaw in American’s thinking
He was compelled to shout out
It didn’t matter being just like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr if Death would be involved
This was Medgar Evers in seeing that Civil Rights needing a resolve

But it required Unity by all in being involved
An empty plate makes one hungry, and an empty glass makes one thirsty
But when you add the food it becomes the fulfillment, and in a task if what already will be accomplished
Civil Rights was a mission that Medgar Evers wanted to face
Medgar was determined that he wasn’t going to let America just let it erase
It wasn’t a Black nor White issue but equality in all races being justified
I had the pleasure to see the Medgar Evers Family personally up close and personal

Now Medgar Evers was a World War II Veteran
Field Secretary for the NAACP
Former Soldier Medgar Evers is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia
Honor and dignity with a stance of salute
A quote being Medgar Evers personal words, “You can **** a man, but you can’t **** an Idea”
It’s about establishment with a fight that shall continue even today 2019.

The chapters with the scene in the South
Civil rights outcry contesting with the mouth
Fighting for racial boundaries
Foes wanted to take away
But a man so mighty, but continuing struggles not on this day
Medgar Evers being an educated man, but education entitled in being anyone’s right
But there was no time to sit and just be polite
Medgar Evers being a man that saw Justice in not being right
Yet deep in Medgar Evers heart, he saw struggles in equality being a plight
Eyes of the world looked on
Opposition within negative felt equality didn’t belong
There was a sense in the air that separation needed to be in place
But Medgar Evers was determined it would be erased
But this rattled Medgar Evers mind
Why was hatred so sublime in racism being blocked like window blinds
Even after Medgar Evers was assassinated
Investigations upon investigations were never really complete
Justice in answered continued chapters was full of deceit
There were very questionable statements
But all kinds of thoughts that continued to go on
However no credible sources precise
But there was a break in the case
In between sentences being an absolute cover up waste
The novel shed lights into delights
Plights open with a new spotlight
Evidence that was definitely overlooked
Someone was adding the facts in aiding the crooks
Medgar Evers being a man that shouted out to the world
But it caught the attention of the media, as facts were looked into further with surprising results
But the aftermath of the novel made foes and righteous hearts swirl
Medgar Evers motto, “Stand up for what’s right, but never settle for wrongful acts”.

A man who was involved in the Civil Rights Movement
A race against struggles with time
Fire and Beatings of opposition foes
It was be on defense or lose your toes
Medgar Evers being an educated man
His name and accomplishments known throughout the land
His voice being the statement of what society wants to label
But what theory of opposition is truly brought too the table
A taste of race feeling displaced and how long of the movement that will continue in the race
Medgar Evers and family house was once bombed
This set the situation in being harm
Medgar Evers was the utmost of dignity and recognition
It was a narrow escape being precision
One’s words being a multitude of several
One’s heart being a commitment too many
One’s desire to represent from start to finish
His introduction turning into a bow of finale
His life being distinguished
No matter if a man was shot down
The fight is on to continue in keeping Civil Rights sound
Medgar Evers College, a unit of City University of New York
An educational institution I am proud to say
It was where I graduated back in the day
Legacy history being part of my life
Inspiration to move forward being Medgar Ever’s advice
“Expel into explore, your shout outs that shouldn’t be ignored, but align at the bulls eye and ask many questions of why, and being idealistic in every try”.

Many doubters said I wouldn’t be
But CUNY Medgar Evers College we shall see
I was educated in being a commodity
The lectures with theories of actual life reality
CUNY Medgar Evers College instilled “Precision”
Thinking strategy and reason all under my decision
I became a believer of myself
I don’t think like everybody else
CUNY Medgar Evers College saw my distant horizon
They saw my efforts of being successful being yonder
It makes all the doubters wonder
But it gives CUNY Medgar Evers College the honor
They have a familiar name with a distinguished face
It’s all rounded at a time of the Civil Rights race
It’s Medgar Evers College in taking its place
It’s my own honor in being educated that no one can erase
A trace of philosophy and being prepared
Business world, this is an achiever who is stating a knowledge mode, but establishing a voice in knowing I should be heard
Many thought I would never go through
Doubters tried all kinds of negativity they could do
CUNY Medgar Evers College helped me to ignore
Prosperity is much to explore
My alma mater of CUNY Medgar Evers College
They showed me I am everything I was trained to be
I continue to be ready for all to see
But I want to remind all came from thee.

He was born July 2, 1925,
son of James and Jesse Evers,
Medgar Evers of Mississippi,
World War II veteran,
fought in the Battle of Normandy,
June 1944,
with his soldier brothers
of same and other races.

He rose a leader,
a Freedom Hero,
Mississippi field secretary of NAACP,
President, Regional Council of
***** Leaders,
husband of Myrlie, her purity
of devotion,
father of Darrell, Reena Denise,
and James,
civil rights leadership of the
highest calling,
of a bravery that persevered
again.

That early morning,
June 12, 1963,
a shot of hate tore
through his heart,
he was fallen in his own driveway,
his family witnessed this
most heinous of murders
committed in the insanity
of human acridity,
the bitterness in our psyches.

June 19, 1963,
full military honors,
Arlington National Cemetery,
for a man of a character so
much more loving
than his assassin's.

We, as a people,
we must obliterate
pre-conceived assumptions,
faulty thoughts of each other.

Medgar Evers of Mississippi,
Medgar Evers of America,
posthumously awarded the
Spingarn Medal,
murdered in a country
he fought for,
merited eternally by God.

Honest and true
Alumni who always pursue
I will never forget my education and Degree from CUNY Medgar Evers College
I graduated many years ago
I just want you to know
I wasn’t sure what to expect
I knew it would be Theory, Concepts and Analysis
Medgar Evers College taught me always be determined and you will have a following
For me, it was intervention
For that, it is appreciation
College classes that offered insights
The Professors would often encourage me directly and say, “You will make it”
There were times doubt entered my mind
Yet assurance came directly through my professors
They saw in me which I didn’t see in myself
Trial and error approach
When it came to Midterms and Final exams, I didn’t panic, I simply studied in preparation and buckled down
The advice I offer to all incoming college students, “Nothing in life is easy, but challenging your own mind in what is to come is education and your own success story that will follow”
Medgar Evers College instilled that approach in me
Business and people that I have connected often say, “Well done Medgar Evers College and breeding one of your products”
Becoming the product, I became my own success story in confessing
My accomplishment can support that
My tomorrow is every day
My today is a preparation that was the beginning from the start with what was coming next
What matters is knowledge
What comes out being educated
CUNY Medgar Evers College did both
What you are reading didn’t happen by chance
Purpose and privilege
Standing on my own principles and standards
Expectations my grasp
The Medgar Evers College embodied spirit within
Medgar Wiley Evers which the college is named after
“Be determined while being successful”

Guns and more guns need to be put down
Bullets should be replaced with education being the sound
It’s time to become a success
Yet it’s up to our young people to put that to the test
Their testimony surrounding confess
Everyone has capabilities to learn
However, one must adapt to theories forming concepts
Imagine having a college degree for all to see
Having confident being your own decree
The movement of action in making education what it should be
A mind is a terrible thing to waste
But the key is to make education your base
Former President Barack Obama had the right idea, “You Can”
But the new continued motto, “You shall Until”
A young man at a United ***** College Fund Raiser said this vital point, “Blacker the college Sweeter the education”
Education being the unity, but bring back to the community
Determination in step out and explore
Seeing one’s horizon but beyond the shore
A college education is an opportunity being a chance
Knowing the theories is how one will advance
Higher Education means being one step ahead
But the opposition wants minds to be misled
Prove to yourself what education can do for you
It’s a journey being a must to go through
Achievers such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers, Dr. Maya Angelou and scores of others
They instilled the passion in how to achieve, and determined education was what they were going to receive
They were ready no matter what
Fasten your educational seat belt as you will be taking off into Higher Learning Institutions in education beyond measure
Education is, but hold tight to the learning saddle
It might seem like a battle
But the end rewards is succeed
Slavery that was while be came destined for education now
One word leads to a complete sentence
One’s thoughts illustrates the understanding
Adaptability of the concepts gained
Long lasting knowledge is what will remain
UNCF philosophy, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”
But the mind must be ready to spiral and absorb
But education and knowledge work all accord.

I had famous legacies from education and experience which some these achievers can be found in history books
But let’s take a closer look
For starters, it was my time attending CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE, my library Supervisor was Leola Maddox, Wife of Alton Maddox, the famous Lawyer in the Tawana Brawley Case in 1987
Also at CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE, I had the honor and pleasure to have Professor Dr. Betty Shabazz, Widow of Malcolm X and she taught a Health and Wellness class
But I had Dr. Shabazz in the fall term that went fast
Now at the Greyhound Corporation, I had 3 Mentors, but one that was significant and his name was Joe Black, Vice President, but who also was the pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers and who played with Jackie Robinson
I still have the books that Mr. Black gave me in Achieving Worth Receiving
Now back to CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE, June 8, 2017 of the 46th COMMENCEMENT, I had the opportunity to see Medgar Evers Widow, Dr. Myrlie Evers, Daughter and Grandson. I witnessed former Secretary Of State, Hillary Clinton being the keynote speaker
Ken Webb, Formerly of KISS-FM Radio Host lectured at CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE as a Professor along with my Professor Dr. Mary Umolu in Radio Station Operations Production Programming
We move from the College to the Old New York Coliseum that was in Columbus Circle in New York City, and it was the New York Auto Show and this is where I met Jesse Owens, won numerous gold medals in the 1936 Summer Olympics. We talked briefly one on one
At Rockefeller Center, I bumped into Mr. David Rockefeller and we talked for 10 minutes one on one
I also met Ted Turner at CNN CENTER, Atlanta, and he gave us a talk in my tour group
I also shook hands with Cardinal Terrence Cooke on the steps of St. Patrick’s Cathedral as they were celebrating the Church’s Centennial
Met Movie Star David Hasselhoff of the Knight-Rider TV Series Fame as we talked directly at Universal Studios, Hollywood, California and also had conversation with KIT, the knight-Rider Car
Miracle on 34th Street I actually lived during the R.H. Macy & Co., Inc. and Gimbels era, but also extends into the TITANIC
I spoke to Arnold Schwarzzenger during his Bodybuilding Competing Days and Superstar Billy Graham of Wrestling
Dr. Hazel Duke of the NAACP New York Chapter preached at my Church
Eubie Blake, Famous Jazz Pianist/Composer is my Great Uncle and who is also in the Smithsonian ***** Museum in Washington, DC
There are a host more, but I leave it right there
Each star personality with qualities beyond compare
Reflection fitting any occasion
History being part of me
I shared because I wanted all to see.

I think on the strives our Black Ancestors made
It was a struggle to get done
Yet maneuvering and proving made their name among
Names that come to mind such as George Washington Carver, Medgar Wiley Evers, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jesse Owens, Joe Black, Jackie Robinson and the list goes on and on
So what makes their specific Black Achievers great?
It was their focus on achievement and continuing no matter what
It was their understanding
Their purpose being their own contribution
So have names on educational institutions for example, MEDGAR EVERS, CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE
I am proud to say, I am the product of CUNY Medgar Evers College embracing in the Medgar Evers Legacy
I was honored too be taught at CUNY Medgar Evers College by Dr. Betty Shabazz, Widow of MALCOLM X
I was inspired in her teachings and values
So Black History had and continues to be an impact on me
“To be a success, you must be taught in wisdom associating from the best”
That is my honest and true confess
But these say what is really in my heart
“Struggles are only preparations being what is expected in life. It comes with understanding in what knowledge provides. It comes with true meaning in believing, but with observation in listening”.
preservationman Jan 2016
February being a yearly reminder of Afro-American achievement
It is also being the black pioneer’s commitment
Creations being actual experiments
Discovering knowledge and expanding their mind
Being successful with theory combined
The possibilities that actually became a reality
George Washington Carver in turning a peanut into oil
Eubie Blake, my Famous Great Uncle who was a Movie Star, Jazz Pianist, Composer and in 1985, a Broadway Play “Eubie” in his honor
Dr. Martin Luther King, Civil Rights fight for Equality in order that there would be liberty
Medgar Wiley Evers, a Civil Rights leader who fought for what was wrong in order for all to get along, and a college named after him called CUNY MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE
Malcolm X’s widow, Dr. Betty Shabazz, I had her as a Professor in a health class while I was attending CUNY Medgar Evers College
Joe Black, One of my Mentors who is deceased, was once a Pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers and later Vice President of Special Markets at the Greyhound Corporation
Ken Webb, Formerly Kiss-FM 98.7 Radio Personality Host in lecturing my Radio Production class in the fundamental of Radio Station Engineering at CUNY Medgar Evers College actual Radio Station
Zelma Lewis, Deceased Board of Education Music School Teacher and Professional Opera Singer.  I was exposed to Opera at 15 Years Old at the AMATO OPERA HOUSE
in the Bowery in downtown Manhattan. Ms. Lewis taught me the fundamentals of the Piano after hearing me play the ***** and Mr. Daniels being a Professional Pianist also taught me the Piano.
Charles Anthony Blake, my Grandfather, who taught me the elements of Typing and becoming intellectual in being college educated
My personal heroes in helping become a champion established in how I would succeed. Some were famous and some were not. Yet in their own right, it doesn’t matter as it is true Afro-American achievement that all provided in contributions in their own way and it’s their inspiration that carries me each and every day
They all are great in their own God given talents
They were nothing that I needed to be silent
Achievements made against all odds
Achieved in how and the remembrance being now.

— The End —
