Remembrance**

A dirt blown wind
stings my face as I walk
this dry river bed below the mesa.
It is a barren time of year and
cold, with some snow on the ground.
This is the land of our ancestors,
it calls to me
even though I now live in a larger city
east of Four Corners
and the Four Sacred Mountains.
~~~
It is in the hogan of my Grand Mother’s family
that I am learning the ceremonial dances-
the Blessing Way;
to sand draw the signs
and dance the dance
that can heal the diseases
of the belegana’s hatred
for our traditional ways:
the Ghost Dance of the Sioux;
the Katsina Songs of the Hopi and Zuni;
the Circle Dances of the Cherokee.
~~~
Belegana society teaches our young
the ways of money, alcohol and ****,
of scorched earth, casinos
and death.
~~~
I am only a small part People,
my moccasins too new
and still hurt my feet.
And yet, I would willingly sweat out
every ounce of belegana blood
for just one glimpse of seeing
the full moon rising over Big Mountain;
of watching Coyote dancing
to Kokopelli’s flute;
our People happy, in balance
above and below,
no longer forgetful of our Origin Songs.
If Ondo is used for settlers
And Ogun is a river
Tell me about Oyo, an empire
You mispell Gwosh as Jos
Recognised Sokoto, a market
Far away from Osun, a river
Lakes is to Lagos
As Kogin is to Kogi
And Kebbi is synonymous to Ka'abba
Janzama, women power inspired Katsina
But Kano was a Blacksmith
While Kaduna means Crocodile
The people of the golden soils of Jigawa
To the river Imo Mmiri
They don't speak Gombe at all
Take me to the hills of "Enu Ugwu"
Following the hills in "Okiti"
Without navigating through Iduu
All Ebonyi are "Aboine"
Close the Delta that marries the atlantic
And Oyono, makes you Cross River
Don't say Benue, say "Binuwe"
Balga, Yelga, Salga formed Bayelsa
And I love Kasashen Bauchi
"Anyim Oma Mbala kwenu!"
But I love ladies from "Kwa Iboe"
Only legends understands this
Tell them I told you
Adamawa is a warrior
While Abia is a coinage
If I missed your state
Go back to the history books
This is just a drill...
Each year, we depend on winds returning,
each year, we watch richest of hoarders lose,
every thing, to a storm. And ten years later,
do it again, as if there were a curse for stupid.
As a messenger from goodness knows where,
clowns as fox like fools, all my foxes,
come from Disney Studios, I must admit.
Though there is a curio-resemblance I have seen
fox-related news old so it is, so it is,
the Katsina embodied and festooned in regalia
its apron a half-fox, hindlegs and long fluffy tail,
same design as on the T-shapes at Gobekli-Tepi
representing an idea from the wild blue yonder,
we are passengers,
we are not in charge, and there is no place like home.
Once you land, and root, and sprout, and pierce the sky,
to feel the changes, as the earth wobbles around the sun.
Cry O' crying
Weeping bitterly
Blubbering sourly
Broken into tears
Katsina massacre
Zamfara brutal kills
Gunmen firing
Everyday kidnapping
Borno insurgency
Boko Haram invasion
Niger-Delta militia
OPC homicide
IPOB agitating
Herdsmen attacks
Poor lives so risky
Corruption so tasty
Politician laundering
And, Mr. President
is sleeping
Please wake up Baba Buhari
