Third Eye Candy  Jan 2013
Earwig
Third Eye Candy Jan 2013
rickety  minutes twitch in wood stained cabinets;
mittens in a bin .  birch tones postpone in mauve
twilight... an unfinished diorama.
clandestine. a small glitch in a good rain... cabbages
smitten in mist.  a thirst groaning; long bones caw
fully reclined...  as timeless Brahmans.

old beams of light stack like gold bricks in a humidor;
mittens in a bin.  black  birds comb rogue stones then.... [ pause ]
triffids... blemish barnacles.
crystalline. a ball of lint in a storm drain... vanishes -
bitten out of sight.  at first, toning old gongs... wind
chimes... earth's most wanted.

Wilted Daisies
Rew Feb 7
You're not allowed to be wilted daisies
Adolf trump is gunning for woke lib'ral hacks
make like killer Triffids sting like blazes,

This grifting abuser of old ladies
be sticky Venus flytraps catch this rat,
you're not allowed to be wilted daisies

How can you take on these fascist crazies
no chance by being bumbling weedy crap
make like killer Triffids sting like blazes.

This narcissi projects his dark places
make like badass snapdragons snap them back
you're not allowed to be wilted daisies.

There's time for tumbling tumble-**** lazy
when this beast is well and truly zapped
make like killer Triffids sting like blazes,

This orange beast who intones " obey me "
Vote and vote and vote against him, he'll snap
You're not allowed to be wilted daisies
Make like killer Triffids sting like blazes.

FLIPPER!
Julie Grenness Apr 2017
Our lawn mowing man is called 'Flipper',
He does a great job, what a ripper!
He got the flu, we were a bit stiffer,
Our garden was full of triffids!
Then he returned, thank you, Flipper,
Now there are no triffids!
Feedback welcome.

Flowers!

Flowers!

My baby bought me flowers.
Lilac roses.
They were terrific.
As terrific as virtual 'Triffids'.

My love, such beautiful flowers.
He thought he could eat me.
He said he loved me so.
Next thing that I knew.

I was  his plant food.
A little fertile fertilizer.
Fed to those roses nearly blue.

Closer I went.
Moved up to study those passion flowers.
Up close and personal.

So wanted to smell those roses of lilac.
As lilac roses meant true love.

The one I thought I'd found.
That wouldn't break my heart again.

Instead that rose it bit my nose.
Gave me loads more pain.

the aching flower
CE Jan 2018
triffids sprouted out of my brain, sinking their roots into my cerebellum
replacing electrical beats in my arteries with venom

they ate through the back of my left eye
they wrapped my whole mind in their murderous vines

as my body was shaking and my vision began to smother

I gained a new found respect for my headaching mother
my mum gets awful migraines.

The lamps go out over Europe; when will they burn again?
The New Deaths rise inexorably in Italy and Spain
We leave the office, turn off the lights; stand alone in the dark
Gaze out on Luton’s business zone rather than Saint James’s Park

Soon we’ll learn to spell “furlough”, to self-isolate (so formal!)
Did we sleepwalk into this – JG Ballard meets normal?
Netflix, Fuze and Teams and Zoom, set yourself new goals
Clap the frontline staff at eight, then stockpile toilet rolls

Yet the weather’s kind and spring is here; it feels there’s nothing to fear
Magnified, blown-up, eye-catching - a virus which sounds like a beer
Lockdown will get tiresome, it’ll feel like a phoney war
Masterchef still on the telly, quarantine starting to bore

London Calling reminds us “the wheat is growin' thin”
Blinded like Day of the Triffids by an unseen foe within
Excel’s pop-up wards unnerve, beds laid out in a queue
Sepia-tainted photos: 1918 Spanish flu

Then the figures start to rise - thousands now and more
And, though they’re other people (no black cross on my door),
A feeling of displacement, we’ll meet some sunny day
“We’re all in this together!” doesn’t sound so blasé

How long will England’s hedgerows remain beyond the pale?
How long the pubs stay silent? Denied our pint of ale
The chronicles of history await the final score
A time when over Europe those lamps are lit once more
