one is capable of going in
thought it's in these depths
one finds pearls of wisdom

You can banish their poets

and bend their nibs and break

the lead of their pencils

You can dry their wells and

parch their earth, but you’ll

not drive them to diaspora

You can build your walls and

blacken their eyes, and cast

them your indelible shadow

But they won’t wear no shroud

and they’ll shout out loud because

their spirits have not gone fallow

Doing a Line
Ryan O'Leary Apr 2022
.           Doing a Line

    In the beginning poetry
     was not yet composed.

  Yeats country didn’t exist,
nor did Limerick or Haiku,
Ballad, Lament, Elegy, Ode,
Sonnet, Villanelle or Acrostic.

 God intended proliferation.

Soon after the first rhyming
couplet began to do a line,
the quatrain was born and
so it spread, hence the word

                Universe.

Ode For Palestine

Where does one go to find
a peace, in place of scorn

When all the stones are
thrown, and at them sworn

Why has our rockery become,
their wall obstructing morn

What desert rose can live,
if sunlight’s not being born.

.                 Judas Tree

One day when the leaves of

   empire vacate its tree, skeletal

   branches and a bark-less trunk

will be wondering if it was autumn.

                    Shhhhhh

“ Its roots were pruned "

I didn’t shout you an e((((**,
it was an expression of pain
but you didn’t consider the
content and why it is that it
came back via the grapevine.

If I wanted to talk to myself
I’d stand in front of a mirror
or call myself from the land
line to mobile answerphone,
but not at such a fever pitch.

Parable

     Malsi, who had never
    been out of Gaza was
    picking olives close to
      the high border wall.

She said to her grandmother
   that she wished the trees
     were much much taller.

   But why her grandmother
                enquired?

To which Malsi responded.

     “Because we'd have
   a far far better harvest”.

But it is not the reason
For my insomnia

This is because I am

And holding a vigil
With reason

And the illusion of

Black eyes on barren sands

Where oil the cause of crude
