Black Out
Ryan O'Leary Jul 2024
Universal Outage

Pick a busy street and choose a place to sit.
Allocate a location, then observe for 1 hour.
Take note of how many people occupied a
Particular spot and more, their nationalities,
By approximate assessment. Multiply this by 12 to give an average day. And at night, this
Morsel of ground will be abandoned. Try to
Imagine how many of those that tread on
Your selected pied à terre, were refugees,
Homeless, drug addicts, alcoholics, depressed, suicidal, sexually assaulted, and millionaires. What one will find, is that there
Was room at every given moment for all who
Arrived there, you may notice also that some
Stepped aside permitting the more needy to
Give them the right of passage and all of this
Occurs without lights or police to direct us.
It comes naturally, it is common courtesy, a
Learned response a reflexive action, it is our
Nature. We breathe the same air we share
The same light, until darkness and then we
Are all poetically licensed for everyone to
Distrust everyone, regardless of their colour.

Tourist Refugee

We have all been the
former, few the latter.

Yet, it is in all our DNA,
everyone’s an intruder.

At some time we were
all forced to (e)migrate.

But how ironic, tourists
are becoming a menace.

Barcelona bans baggers

I don’t believe in prevention
permits restricting what is a
normal occurrence of people
movement just as in nature.

Try to imagine, if pigs could fly,
just like the mass migration of
all the avian species annually,
would they need identity cards?

Bédouins, Nomads, Gitanes,
Bohemians & Nonchalant Gaelavanter’s
should be exempt, we are refugees,
no fixed abode’rs not systemised.

The person before me
Never flushed the WC.

Fortunately for him is
What I have to say to
That and but that we
Were on a ferry boat I
May have never go to
Diagnose him. Our paths
Crossed at the toilet door.

There is a cancerous
Growth in the intestine.
Stringy faeces is a sign.

Dare I tell him, as he sat
At the bar with his lady?

Well, I did and he was taken
Aback, 1 that he neglected
To pull the chain and 2 that
I suspected he had cancer!

He took my details and only
Today did I get a call and he
Had gone for tests and would
You believe it, I was right.

Homeless

It is not feasible for one
to imagine homelessness.

Just as it is as difficult to equate
alone and loneliness in a crowd.

If the issue was merely that of
not having a home then so be it.

Alas, our world has very little
tolerance for anything different.

But for some it’s worse, they are
of unsame colour and language.

They are of customs and religions
that are completely alien to us.

They eat smelly food, wear odd
clothing and have strange names.

Bédouins living on streets of our
hard earned independent capital.

Penny for the guy, Penny Lane,
we even had pennies from Heaven!

Do you remember putting a penny
in the black baby boxes at school?

That was when we were of pound
mind and body now we’re metriculated.

I’m Not Racist, But

I won’t sit at the same
table, share a fridge or
sleep with a carnivore.

That is neither bigoted
patriotic, nationalistic
nor sexually segregating.

I do not look upon meat
eaters as inferior beings,
but perhaps, animals do.

We are what we eat after
all and we become what
we think, superior to nature.

I’m not racist, yet, I am
surrounded by the self
righteous meek inheritors.

But it’s the earth will show
up those if value and those
who are good for nothing.

by those who seek a plot to plant.

The Umpire
Ryan O'Leary Jul 2024
There were no linesmen,
nobody to raise a flag
and call for off side.

There were no referees
to blow the whistle when
fouls were being committed.

There were no penalties, yet
frees were the prerogative
of those who made the rules.

There were no period breaks
or aggregate because it was
never home and away, just away.

There were no ticket collectors
because the spectators were
issued with lifetime entry passes.

There were never draws, replays
or cancellations and the visiting
side, always, without fail, won.

There were never commentaries
for the defending sides, because
they were playing against superiors.

But all that changed when one
local team changed tactics back
in 1962, and they beat The Empire.

Behind Closed Drawers

Behind Closed Drawers

I have always suspected that

cutlery can be both devious

and conniving. Our kitchen

table has a drawer and each

time I open it, it seems to me

that nothing is as it should be.

They just don’t stay in their own

allocated spaces. I know for a

fact that one of the knives has

been trying to butter up the old

ladle, whom I think is beyond all

that sort of thing now. Another

one was looking for a fork on the

table; would you believe it?

But, imagine sPATula asking

the lemon squeezer for a twist

and even before he got a reply,

he whisked her away into a dark

corner and tried to skewer her.

Peeler was in on it, it was he who

removed her outer covering and,

only for Masher hearing her

scream, who knows what would

have happened. There is an old

wives tale, keep your tongs as

close together as possible when

in crowded areas with strangers.

The scissors sisters say it also,

because they had a close brush.

Nobody ever touches or even

goes near Ally Grater, same for

chopsticks. Sure would you look at

them; they are seriously anorexic.

One has to wonder about stopper

and bottle *****, they are always

there side by side but never touch,

I think their relationship is platonic.

With all the goings on, is it any

wonder, when the spoon got an

opportunity to elope, off he went,

with, what everyone agrees, was a

stunner, she was an absolute dish.
