Much of the time-
he is alone-

Not wanting to be accosted, attacked, or just not being bothered by other 'homeless' folk, so to speak. Other evenings he may have his wife and three kids with him.

It's his choice.
He has no job
Doesn't wear a watch
Takes care of his family, the best he knows how

Most of the restaurants here close at 10pm. He'll wait until after the  building lights go out, then begin his tour, lessening the chances of being seen by the authorities. It could be two, three, or more hours, before he starts his walk. As many homeless people do, he looks for discarded food, plates, cans, most anything, for some sort of a meal.  He just wants to "survive."

I first saw him on the property surveilance cameras, crossing the parking lot, south to north. But, he didn't stop to check for any unlocked vehicles, just kept going, focused on reaching his destination, whereever that would be, disappearing into the alleyways. When I saw him next, I stepped outside, spoke with a "Good morning," after all, it was about 3am. He stopped, turned, looked at me, then continued on with his mission.

I'll sit down with him, someday soon, for what I haven't told you, is that "Mister Sturdman" is....

a "raccoon!"

I gave him the name of "Mister Sturdman." It just seemed to fit. He and others reside in a heavily wooded area that aligns a small creek(banner pic) on the west side of the building where I work.

that monolith.....
That monument.....to things past-
Memories resurface..........
each time I cross its wake -
"Once upon a time"..........it says to me
Reminding me-
of the "good things," good times
It keeps messages

Finally reached my two days off-
decided that "today, I will do nothing."
But, isn't "doing nothing, doing something?"
We don't realize how important the word "doing" is.

"What are you doing?"
"How are you doing?"
"Why are you doing.......?"
"When are you doing.....?"
"Who are you ......... (Oops!, Save that one for later)

I don't need a necktie-
I don't need a wallet-
I don't need a thingamajig-
or a whatchamacallit!

I have what I want,
a wonderful son, daughter-in-law,
and the two most powerful vitamins
known to mankind---my grandchildren.
AND, last, but not least, my "Guardian Angel",
Brie!(as in cheese)--(my cat!!! :):):)
for they make everyday, Father's Day!

In the dining room, on the wall
were pictures of times past-
Of aunts and uncles, and some curios-
memories, that will, forever last-

One item hung in silence-
a product of those olden days-
Called into service-
when respect for others-often went astray

I remember what my father said
when I asked what 'that' was for-
and a slight grin crossed his face-
"Ahh, yes, I recall it, that's for sure!"

"That's a leather strop", he said -
"to hone a razor, when we shaved-
It was also a "learning tool"-
when we, as kids, misbehaved."

My dad was from the "old school"
when "respect" was being taught
Not by others, but by our parents
else our purpose..........
"Went for naught!"

The holidays are to give us hope,
  to fulfill our aspirations-
so, I usually wait 'til December 1,
  to hang my Christmas decorations

I placed one bag beside the tree-
resting on the floor-
another, on the landing-
outside of my front door

I wound the tree with tinsel-
hanged some brightly covered orbs-
hummed some Christmas carols
for t'was a mood to be absorbed

I then heard some footsteps
quickly coming up the walk
two voices speaking lowly,
then coming to a halt

I continued with my business-
there was nothing for me to say,
and the voices and the footsteps
quickly left, and sped away

I knew what had happened,
when I opened the door-
for that other bag was missing
Gone!; and was no more!

Two remaining items,
to place upon the tree
a Pear tree and a Partridge-
for all my friends to see

My spirit they enlivened-
that Pear tree and its Partridge-
For those two unknown voices

Stole my bag of kitchen garbage!!

(saved me a trip to the dumpster!)

"How do you know which one to choose", my granddaughter Emily asked , as we pulled into the parking lot of the shelter. "It will be the first one that gets up to meet us" I said, with a bit of anxiety.
After registering at the desk, we began the walk down the aisle, looking at the occupants of those cages that lined both sides. All of a sudden, about 10 feet in front of us, a grey and black striped leg with a white foot, came protruding out from the front of a cage. The paw began "flexing", as if signaling, "Hey! Over here!"
As I held her, and Emily stroked her forehead, she emanated a very strong, exuberant, vibrating, purr; contented, unafraid, her head tucked into the crook of my arm. We had found my Guardian Angel!

I whispered to her as softly as I knew how:

"We are going home-
I will always keep you safe,
I will never harm you
You will always have shelter, food, and water-
I will keep you warm in the winter........
and cool in the summer.......
You will not 'want', for love."

As I whispered those words, her purr grew stronger, her paw flexing against my arm. For you see, I am convinced that God told her we were coming, and to give us a sign to let us know where she was. It was He, who chose her for us. Some of you may not agree with that, and that's okay. It's important that me and Emily believe it. Regardless of which room I'm in(except the bath), she is there, as she is now, asleep on the foot of the bed as I write. My home isn't empty.... anymore.

Friends, there are many(I think, I hope). So, to be fair, I will respond with this.

"Stricly an Opinion"
October 20, 2014   8:40a.m.

On August 28, 2013, strictly as a novice, and not having posted anything, anywhere, I posted my first two pieces of "literary art" on the HP site. I had previously searched other similar sites until finally deciding on posting with HP. I'm glad I did.  Why?

Not knowing what to expect, I threw "1894", and "Folklore and Fairy Tales" into the "mixing bowl". Pradip and Sally were the first to comment, and I will never forget the encouragement their words gave me. Never! Quite often, I go back and re-read them, particularly when I get a little discouraged when the "writers block" syndrome decides to attack. Thank you both, so very, very much!

But that is the core of the HP Family. There is an aura, a special atmosphere of cohesiveness among its contributors, willing to offer(in most cases) constructive criticism without being cynical, and always encouraging each other. Making friends whom we may never see, whose hands we may never shake, but a friendship none the less, that is spread throughout the globe, with the thoughts that will always be there. It is a feeling I did not sense with other sites.

One thing is for certain. We never know what our readers are going to like/dislike on any given day. When we post a piece, of what we may think is the work of "pure genius" could go by the wayside in seconds. On the other end of the spectrum, what we believe is not so great, could trend in minutes.

We will keep trying.

When my wife, Karen, passed away nearly eight years ago, our son, Russ, and the grand-children, Evan and Emily, wanted me to move to the town where they live, about 20 miles north of Dallas. I agreed it would be best. It is the best decision I ever made.
After scheduling the moving day, Russ, Evan, Emily arrived to help me pack. In the process I pulled out the box that held my private documents which contained my will and insurance policies. I turned to Russ and said, "while I'm thinking about it, you keep these in your files",  and handed them to him. Obviously, his mind was on watching the kids, and he replied, "why are you giving them to me?" I looked at him, " now think about it, I'm not the one who's going to need'em."

So far, they remain untouched.

Cowboys and sidekicks,
were not the only heroes
We idolized, and ran to see
at those "Saturday picture shows."

There was "Superman, and "Batman",
and that magic word, "SHAZAM."
The "cliff-hanger" serials
we hoped would never end.

There were all types of villains-
even "space invaders"-
It was then, that I changed my mind-
to become, a "Caped Crusader."

As those Saturdays passed by-
how I wished that I could fly-
And all I needed was a cape
to soar throughout the sky.

I grabbed a towel, to make a cape,
the largest towel that I could find-
And I didn't tell anyone
what was really on my mind.

I went thru the kitchen
out the door, into the yard-
Mom thought I went out to play,
so I caught her off her guard.

A couple of the neighbor kids,
I now call my "entourage"
gathered with excitement
as I climbed, to the top of the garage.

I stood there with my legs apart-
I could feel the pulsing of my heart-
hands, braced against my hips-
then, the tightening of my lips-

I knew that somewhere in the city-
Crime was out there brewing-
and then I heard my mother's voice-
"WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING!!!

Well, I tell you folks, there's not a tone
that can evoke such heights of fear-
And the superpowers I thought I had,
suddenly disappeared(as did the other kids)

There was screaming, and yelling-
and amidst the clamor and the din-
Neighbors, looking out their windows-
saying, "it's just that kid again."

I didn't know what she was saying-
but I'll never forget that frown,
And her words  got a little worse
when she had to help me down

Banished to the bedroom-
on my bed, with the cape that I had wore-
Contemplating what dreadful fate
my future had in store.

I heard the doorknob turning-
then dad stepped thru the door
He knew I had been crying
as my head hung toward the floor.

What I thought would happen, didn't-
as he sat down on the bed-
then with his hand he gently brushed,
the top of my head.

He explained to me the difference
of what was real, and fantasy-
That those movies are adventures,
not real, just fun to go and see.

Here I am, seventy-two and still alive-
and sometimes I wonder
how I've managed to survive

On my mantle are two pictures
that make me happy, and make me sad-
for those real superheroes-
They're my mother, and my dad.

"How still, the water lies-
as the heavens lighten
and the darkness dies"

"Still", no breeze, peaceful, serene-
the trees, reflecting off the mirrored surface,
as if saying, "its going to be a beautiful day."

And, here they come!
Mom, dad, their five kids,
on their morning outing-
leaving a soft wake from those
webbed feet as they glide across the water.

There is a certain beauty in watching the ducks
and the geese this early-
I like to think it's God's way of saying "Good Morning!"-
to me.

I bought a pair of shoes, not too long ago-
Some folks call them “sneakers"-
I prefer to call them “squeakers.”
because they "squish and squawk" from heel to toe

Yes, it can be annoying-
To those with whom I work-
Walking down the hallway,
causing heads to turn, and shirk.

Reactions are amusing-
but mostly a lot of fun-
The only disadvantage is-
I can’t sneak up on anyone.

The store would soon be closing-
it was fifteen to the four-
When the bells began to jingle-
as the old gent came thru the door.

A "dapper" chap with a bowler hat-
a three piece suit, to look his best-
And when he turned, you could see it--
a watch fob, draped across his vest.

With a pale, and wrinkled fist
in his hand, he firmly grasped-
A black, and polished "walking stick",
which added to his class.

He stood there, as if frozen,
poised upon the floor-
As his eyes perused the displays,
neatly placed throughout the store.

"Gentlemen, I would like to see,
your "time pieces" of variety-
Pocket watches, by which they're known,
and since a child, I've always owned."

From his accent, he was English-
with a bit of Scottish brogue-
Perhaps, here on a visit-
or on a trip around the globe.

"Allow me sir," the clerk replied-
to show you all our stock-
"Some pieces are rather old and rare-
and kept under key and lock."

He laid his hat atop a case-
and propped the stick against a wall-
Then began an examination
of those "time pieces", one, and all.

The mantle clocks began to chime-
and a cuckoo came alive-
The old gent seemed astonished-
that his "time piece" noted "five."

"Gentlemen, I must apologize",
showing a little red upon his face,
"But, I'll be back on the 'morrow'
to this fascinating place."

With hat in hand, he placed it-
hiding hair of solid gray-
Then doffed his hat, and smiling-
stepped through the door and walked away.

At closing time, they still weren’t through-
for they all had a job to do-
They had to clean the entire shop-
and each had a choice, broom, or mop?

Shades were drawn across the doors-
as each began their chosen chores,
When one called out, in a voice so thick-
“that old gent forgot his stick!”

There it was, the "stick", often called a "cane",
for their use is much the same-
Standing *****, against the wall,
with a shaft, a half inch thick, and thirty-six tall

But, it was the "hilt", the handle,
also called a "haft”-
That was the perfect compliment
to that "straight and perfect" shaft.

It glistened, and reflected-
and a joy to behold-
For that haft was fashioned
in 18 karat gold.

Oh, it was beautiful, don't you see-
from a pharaoh's treasure, it could be-
How could such a piece be left behind,
a piece so intricately designed?

On many accessories of it's kind-
there is a space, that is designed,
Either on the top, or on the side-
to which a name can be applied.

Ah yes, a person, perhaps someone of fame-
for in old fashion, style, and script,
Was etched the name of
"Noah Zane."

The cane was wrapped in  jeweler's cloth,
and placed inside the safe-
For the "old gent" would be returning
to this "fascinating place."

With a sigh, I have to tell you,
tho' sad, but it's a fact-
That "old gent" who had the stick-
he never did come back!

Shops of like were "queried"
both jewelery and the pawn-
And neither hint, nor clue was found-
for that "old gent" was gone.

So, what has come of the "stick",
or "cane" you wish to call?
I'm sitting here looking at it-
for its mounted on my wall.

(Thanks folks, for your patience)

From his accent, he was English-
with a bit of Scottish brogue-
Perhaps, here on a visit-
or on a trip around the globe.

"Allow me sir," the clerk replied-
to show you all our stock-
Some pieces are rather old and rare-
and kept under key and lock."

He laid his hat atop a case-
and propped the stick against a wall-
Then began an examination
of those "time pieces", one, and all.

The mantle clocks began to chime-
and a cuckoo came alive-
The old gent seemed astonished-
that his "time piece" noted "five."

"Gentlemen, I must apologize",
showing a little red upon his face,
"But, I'll be back on the 'morrow'
to this fascinating place."

With hat in hand, he placed it-
hiding hair of solid gray-
Then doffed his hat, and smiling-
stepped through the door and walked away.

At closing time, they still weren’t through-
for they all had a job to do-
They had to clean the entire shop-
and each had a choice, broom, or mop?

Shades were drawn across the doors-
as each began their chosen chores,
When one called out, in a voice so thick-
“that old gent forgot his stick!”

There it was, the "stick", often called a "cane",
for their use is much the same-
Standing *****, against the wall,
with a shaft, a half inch thick, and thirty-six tall

But, it was the "hilt", the handle,
also called a "haft”-
That was the perfect compliment
to that "straight and perfect" shaft.

It glistened, and reflected-
and a joy to behold-
For that haft was fashioned
in 18 karat gold.

Oh, it was beautiful, don't you see-
from a pharaoh's treasure, it could be-
How could such a piece be left behind,
a piece so intricately designed?

On many accessories of it's kind-
there is a space, that is designed,
Either on the top, or on the side-
to which a name can be applied.

Ah yes, a person, perhaps someone of fame-
for in old fashion, style, and script,
Was etched the name of
"Noah Zane."

The cane was wrapped in  jeweler's cloth,
and placed inside the safe-
For the "old gent" would be returning
to this "fascinating place."

With a sigh, I have to tell you,
tho' sad, but it's a fact-
That "old gent" who had the stick-
he never did come back!

Shops of like were "queried"
both jewelery and the pawn-
And neither hint, nor clue was found-
for that "old gent" was gone.

So, what has come of the "stick",
or "cane" you wish to call?
I'm sitting here looking at it-
for its mounted on my wall.

The walking stick/cane has been in possession of my family
for 83 years. In 1932, San Diego, California, my father was employed as a jeweler/watchmaker, and was working the day the "old gent" visited the store.
Richard Riddle Mar 2016
The store would soon be closing-
it was fifteen to the four-
When the bells began to jingle-
as the old gent came thru the door.

A "dapper" chap with a bowler hat-
a three piece suit, to look his best-
And when he turned, you could see it--
a watch fob, draped across his vest.

With a pale and wrinkled fist
in his hand, he firmly grasped-
A black, and polished "walking stick",
which added to his class.

He stood there as if frozen,
poised upon the floor-
As his eyes perused the displays,
neatly placed throughout the store.

"Gentlemen, I would like to see,
your "time pieces" of variety-
Pocket watches, by which they're known,
and since a child, I've always owned."

Out from the mist...

Perhaps the most misused and incorrect phrase, in any language, is:

"It's my 'PERSONAL OPINION" that.........................

"Excuse me! But, if it is YOUR opinion, doesn't that automatically make it 'PERSONAL.'

Just try saying, It's "MY OPINION."

My wife, Karen, was a bit of a 'grammer officionado', being a writer herself. She would cringe whenever she heard someone say that phrase. We all do, have, and will continue to do so. Think about it, and you'll see the reasoning.
Richard Riddle Nov 2016
Do you really know how intelligent is your pet? "REALLY? It's eery at times, just downright scary.
Within two weeks after getting married, my wife, Karen, and I obtained a Siamese kitten, "Pudd'n." She was the self-appointed "Queen" and exalted ruler of our home. Correction, "our lives." Her realm lasted for 16 years, traveled with us, went to drive-in movies with us, all that kind of stuff. She was our first 'angel.'
But there was 'one' particular trait we never understood. One that had us nearly convinced that she was "not of this earth." She loved the television series, "The X-files." whenever Karen and I would sit down to watch the show and the music intro would begin, Pudd'n would come out from whichever bedroom she was in, jump upon the arm of the sofa and stay there like a statue and watch the entire episode. When it was over, she would return to the comfort of the bed. She never did this with other programs, just this one, week after week. and, the expression in her eyes while watching, let us believe that she actually understood the plot of the series.
I guess that the point of all this is, "Never underestimate what an animal is capable of "thinking, and doing." They'll surprise you time and time again. This is why the shelters are so important, and why everyone should have an "angel" in their home. Visit a shelter today.

I was visiting my older brother and sister-in-law, when he emerged from a storage room with a box filled with family"artifacts", photos, etc. In that box was a 78rpm record, created in 1947. I was not quite six years old. This caused the eruption of a memory long lost, for it was recorded by my kindergarten teacher; my recitation of a poem titled, "My Sore Thumb", written by Burges Johnson. It appeared in a 1921 publication of a book, "Youngsters:" Collected Poems of Childhood", published by E.P. Dutton Publishing Co., which is now part of the Penguin Group. I only had to memorize the first stanza.
ENJOY!

"My Sore Thumb"

I jabbed a jack-knife in my thumb—
Th' blood just spurted when it come!
The cook got faint, an' nurse she yelled
An' showed me how it should be held,
An' Gran'ma went to get a rag,
An' couldn't find one in th' bag;
An' all the rest was just struck dumb
To see my thumb!

Since I went an' jabbed my thumb
I go around a-lookin' glum,
And Aunt, she pats me on the head
An' gives me extra ginger-bread;
But brother's mad, an' says he'll go
An' take an' axe, an' chop his toe:
An' then he guesses I'll keep mum
About my thumb!

At school they as't to see my thumb,
But I just showed it to my chum,
An' any else that wants to see
Must divvy up their cake with me!
It's gettin' well so fast, I think
I'll fix it up with crimson ink,
An' that'll keep up int'rest some
In my poor thumb!
Tape recorders, as we know them had not yet been fully developed for retail sale. But, there were disc recorders, 78rpms mostly, which the networks used to record their radio programs for archival purposes.

"Pettiness, and jealousy, go together.

But, there is not a place for it here on HP. We write what we wish, what we feel, how we feel; about our lives, loves, adventures; our spirituality; we write because it's a beautiful hobby for many of us, and not to begin a competition as to who can do better.
There are so many on this site whose talent I so admire since I joined the site 2 years ago. Because of this nonsense, we recently lost a great writer and friend, whom I will miss terribly. Those that participate in the pettiness, jealousy, hatred, and discontent, are in a minority. Hopefully, the other contributors, writers, poets, essayists, old and new alike, also realize this. Let us not give up our seats on this "Poet's Train!"

When I was writing my piece, "For Donna(Society has Changed)", I remembered that Corpus Christi has an annual "Buccaneer Day" celebration. My brother and me always dressed up in costume to take in some of the events. Of course, as a kid, and some "adult kids" couldn't be a pirate unless you wore a patch over one eye, a red bandana around your head, and a scar drawn on your face.

There was always a re-enactment of the pirates attacking, boarding, and taking command of a galleon. Then I remembered columnist Dave Barry's creation of "Talk Like a Pirate Day!" With some of the responses to my post, it seems I found the key to unlock that "inner child", releasing more recollections of childhood pleasantries.

Now, all ages seem to be getting in on the act. Taking time off from these stressful times to do something asinine, somewhat ridiculous, but totally enjoyable,  at least for a little while. There doesn't seem to be much of that anymore.

THE SATURDAY MORNING MATINEE

The kids would gather early,
to form the ticket line-
the movie wouldn't start til ten,
and cost a penny, plus a dime.

Some lived close enough to walk,
some would ride their bikes-
They came from all directions,
so, say goodbye to peace, and quiet!

Mom and Dad would even bring 'em
pick'em up and take'em  home-
knowing that for about two hours,
They would have that time alone.(H'mm?)

It was where we saw our heroes,
knowing truth and justice would prevail-
As we watched those nasty villains,
being carted off to jail.

Those times now, have long been gone
But the memories will, forever stay-
I never will forget, the

Saturday Morning Matinee!

"Sing'n Cowboy."

Our hero was a special man,
to reach that level of acclaim
So, if you'll please allow me-

Our hero, leading a wagon train,
three thousand miles from East to West-
Surviving the elements and indian raids-
his clothes were always freshly washed,
and his pants so neatly pressed.

Our hero always had a horse-
so smart it could pass a college course-
Our hero, *******, and in a terrible spot,
that horse, with his teeth,
Could untie the Gordian Knot.

All successful heros
had to have a friend-
A trusty, loyal, "sidekick"
that stayed with him to the end.

All the movie "sidekicks,"
as often as they could-
Had a very simple job,
to keep our hero "look'n good,"

They had to have a funny name-
"Fuzzy", "Gabby", and "Ukelele Ike",
names known from coast to coast,
and up and down the pike.

There was one that stood alone-
taller than the others
Often called "The Best of theWest",
none other, than "Lumpy Covers."

So, our hero, with his 'ol guitar-

Cowboys and sidekicks,
were not the only heroes
We idolized, and ran to see
at those "Saturday picture shows."

There was "Superman, and "Batman",
and that magic word, "SHAZAM."
The "cliff-hanger" serials
we hoped would never end.

There were all types of villains-
even "space invaders"-
It was then, that I changed my mind-
to become, a "Caped Crusader."

As those Saturdays passed by-
how I wished that I could fly-
And all I needed was a cape
to soar throughout the sky.

I grabbed a towel, to make a cape,
the largest towel that I could find-
And I didn't tell anyone
what was really on my mind.

I went thru the kitchen
out the door, into the yard-
Mom thought I went out to play,
so I caught her off her guard.

A couple of the neighbor kids,
I now call my "entourage"
gathered with excitement
as I climbed, to the top of the garage.

I stood there with my legs apart-
I could feel the pulsing of my heart-
hands, braced against my hips-
then, the tightening of my lips-

I knew that somewhere in the city-
Crime was out there brewing-
and then I heard my mother's voice-
"WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING!!!

Well, I tell you folks, there's not a tone
that can evoke such heightened fear-
And the superpowers I thought I had,
suddenly disappeared(as did the other kids)

There was screaming, and yelling-
and amidst the clamor and the din-
Neighbors, looking out their windows-
saying, "it's just that kid again."

I didn't know what she was saying-
but I'll never forget that frown,
And her words  got a little worse
when she had to help me down

Banished to the bedroom-
on my bed, with the cape that I had wore-
Contemplating what dreadful fate
my future had in store.

I heard the doorknob turning-
then dad stepped thru the door
He knew I had been crying
as my head hung toward the floor.

What I thought would happen, didn't-
as he sat down on the bed-
then with his hand he gently brushed,
the top of my head.

He explained to me the difference
of what was real, and fantasy-
That those movies are adventures,
not real, just fun to go and see.

Here I am, seventy-two and still alive-
and sometimes I wonder
how I've managed to survive

On my mantle are two pictures
that make me happy, and make me sad-
for those real superheroes-
They're my mother, and my dad.
