The candle ember flicks – a snap that brings
eyes to close and open;
marking an instant.

A still soul – embraced by chirping sounds
and the steady tick of a clock.
Instruments filling the night air with song.

Stillness turns to motion
and then becomes still again.
As the band of crickets prepare their bows
the clock’s gears turn and twist.
Another chirp and another tick.

The stars twinkle to the unyielding rhythm
and transform the dark into a stage
where time continues, forever unchanging
where all the terrors of the world
can be put aside if only for a moment.

The clock, the crickets, the stars, the night
They all collide into the same song –
The same song that never stays the same.
