i tried to sleep through the melancholy calls of the gulls
their desolation at the desolation plain to hear in their plaintive cries
so distinct from their usual raucous chatter
back and forth and back as they gorged secure
no more
i didnt know birds could cry
until i felt their tears fall
from my eyes
the feeding ground is gone
