She stayed true to the pearls
That she lassoed around her neck
And kept her heels on tight

Her tears would fall down
To the rhythm of a folk song
She would slowly sing along
In a lamenting fashion
She could never admit that
Being alone in this world
Was so hard to handle
On her own

She wanted God to bring
Down a glimmer of hope
That would guide her back
To something much better
But all she had ever heard
Was God calling her home

And in every bathroom mirror
She smeared the makeup to
Resemble a clown
And it suited her
Every night
