How long shall your life be?*
She took the measuring tape in her hand,
slipping it expertly through her fingers
to the exact inch of her choosing.
I watched as she chose my life.
She chose the length and in simple action,
set my fate in string and stone.
I thought we had free will,
but it does not seem quite so.
Destiny, fate, I know not her name,
but I have no choice
but to defy her.
