Lonely vigil, nigh on midnight,
Stars above and earth below,
Sacred silence, dark inviolate,
Seated in the fire’s glow.

Dreaming of a lover’s whispers,
Dancing with her memory,
Drowning in a sea of roses;
Drinking in the melody.

Breathing, touching, soft caresses,
Sweetest honey, strongest wine,
Whispered vows, that sweet assurance:
“I am yours, and you are mine.”

All is fleeting, air and ashes;
Tears ahead and oaths behind,
Fire burning down to nothing,
How could I have been so blind?
A poem written at a friend's cabin, remembering a lost love.
