The Face
niamh May 2015
I look at your face
And wonder
How many of those wrinkles
Are down to me.

I look at your face
And wonder
How eyes, once so full of intelligence
Can stare so vacantly.

I look at your face
And weep silently
For a past you can't remember
And a future that will never come to pass.

I look at your face,
I look for your face,
But the wings of
Death's angel
Cast a shadow over it.

Doomed love

Like a foolish lamb
who falls in love with the slaughterer,
I never stood a chance.

I'm too exhausted to figure it out.

Grief
niamh May 2015
The day dawned anew
And the birds started singing.
They must not yet
Have heard of your passing.
The sound of children's laughter
Rang through the air,
Chilling me to my bones.
The mundanity of other's lives
Washed over me,
Turning my blood to ice.
I couldn't understand
How their lives ticked on
As normal
After you had gone.
The sun, bright in the sky,
Made a mockery of my grief.
Life goes on?
Lucky for them.
Not for me.

Not for me

The pebble dropped
And the ripples ran out,
Devastating aftershocks
From a simple act.
No thought for others.
No care for yourself.
The pond will never
Be the same again.
Be careful how
You cast your stones.

Pale memories
niamh May 2015
I pale in comparison
To the girl in the photo
Who is alight with
The promise of things to come.
Who doesn't yet know real love
And so doesn't know real pain.
Whose skin and soul are pure
And without scars.
Whose faith in humanity
Is yet to be tested.
Who has yet to discover
The best
And worst
Parts of herself.
The girl in the photo
Is fading over time.

So how do I still
Pale in comparison?

For You

The summer sun
sets in your eyes
And the stars
come at night to see you
Apparently I never write anything nice for my husband....so here's a little snippet

He couldn't see the pain
Locked safely away.
Couldn't see the anguish
Of the day-to-day.
Didn't realize that all
Was not well,
That she felt just like
An empty shell.
Didn't see the tears
That streaked her face
As she hid where she could
In the loneliest place.
But when she gathered her courage
And took a deep breath
And explained how bad
She truly felt,
He said not a thing
But held her tight,
and stroked her hair
Throughout the night.
He may have missed
What she tried to hide
But he let her know
That he's by her side.

You & I

You and I met
You and I laughed
You and I danced
You and I talked
You and I wed
You and I loved
You and I fought
You and I lied
You and I screamed
You and I hurt
You and I cried

The love died.

Neither of us grieved.
