Choices
Mike Hauser Jan 2018
There are times that we move freely
Amongst decisions day to day
And other times are hindered
By the choices that we make

All the time creating noises
Leaving others in our wake
From the up to the down
In our choice of give and take

We have the choice of do and don't
The choice of right and wrong
Where you either will or won't
When those choices come along

Some choose the path of foolishness
Others walk among the wise
Lessons learned in badges earned
In the choices of mankind

A Pity
Mike Hauser Jun 2018
You know what I find a pity
The way some folk behave
And what really gets to me, is I see
That I sometimes behave the same

Some things in life that I don't like
In others, I see in myself
Still I find a way to complain
About everyone else

Don't you find this all a pity
The way some people do
Stand here long enough it's not that tough
To see you do it too
Mike Hauser Jun 2014
I dream of you every night
I do it with much delight
Some may think this isn't right
But sometimes dreams are better than life

When I dream you are right here
When I don't your over there
If I had a choice to have you anywhere
It would be in my dreams in my arms dear

I'm now heading back into my room
Where I will sleep till way past noon
Our love will be there in full bloom
And it is there I will never let go of you

Prom
Mike Hauser Mar 2017
I remember that night at the prom
And you with that green dress on
With me all velveted up
In my fancy tux

Our young hearts thought the song would last
Now all mine does is hum of the past
Forgetting the words
As life runs its course

Your parents up and packed you away
To the cold North where cars used to be made
Now a desolate town
The Japanese tore the dream down

And me in the meantime
Joined Uncle Sam to fight the good fight
I needed the space
To get away

I either came to or out of my senses
Called you up saying I can not do this
The entangled wedding vow
That somehow came about

So you went your way and I went mine
Over the static of the telephone line
I think it worked out for the best
For us and the rest

Now here we are years down the road
My mind suddenly deciding to unload
With that night at the prom
And you with that green dress on

The Waiting Room
Mike Hauser Apr 2013
This life we live is a waiting room
Some wait to long, some leave to soon
What magazines do you have strewn
All about your waiting room

The daily grind of The New York Times?
Or do you prefer The Outdoor Life
The magazines that you display
Tell more of you than you could say

Does Better Homes And Gardens fill your life
While Rolling Stones consumes your night
You have a choice in what you read
And a lot of that is what you'll be

So is Popular Science what you cling to?
Or is Christian Alliance your holding glue
And would it change your point of view
If you knew what comes after...

no one here is impressed
...that you are a poet
...did you not know it

who ever would have guessed
...that your word in rhyme
...would falter over time

you put the cart before the horse
...grabbed a hold the reign
...where nothing now's the same

is there any fate that's worse
...than a poet in mid-verse
...running out their course
I enjoy writing so much but at times I stop and wonder why...

Have you ever stood on the edge of night
And wondered at the Milky-way
Gapping at it wide eyed
Without a word to say

Does it make you feel small
And insignificant
Out amongst the stars
Where the universe is kept

The vastness of it all
Clearly on display
Have you ever stood at night
And wondered at the Milky-way

If You're Asking Me
Mike Hauser Dec 2017
This I know for sure
That there ain't no cure
But to run out of men
When it comes to fighting wars

If you're asking me
There ain't no mistaking
To fight our way out of this
We need to stop misbehaving

Can't we come together
And do ourselves some talking
Try on another mans shoes
Get to some serious walking

If you're asking me
Our world leaders are acting childish
Put them all in time out
Before they go and **** us

If we don't do it soon
I'm afraid they'll drop the big one
Blow us to the Moon
Even taking along the innocent

If you're asking me
The world is still worth saving
Though the river mostly flows
At this time it's coagulating

We fight our wars for peace
Who's crazy idea is that
How can this we achieve
If you're asking me

Mother Nature's Want Ad
Mike Hauser Dec 2017
Mother Nature ran a want ad
In this year's Farmers Almanac

Seems these days she's wearing thin
With the progress made by modern man

She needs a little extra help
With the here and there and there about

The whole earth needs a good sweeping
From the ocean floors to the river streams

From high above to down below
All of the trash that has been thrown

With all the extra dust around
She can't keep up with the dusting down

That is why she placed the ad
In hopes of getting help with that

Resumes started pouring fast
From North to South, East to West

So many from around the globe
Who would have guessed, who could have known

There were so many that were keen
In wanting to keep the Planet clean

Right then and there on the spot
She hired them all, the entire lot

She gave them brooms, their own dust pans
Sent them all throughout the land

To every crevice, to every crook
To give the world a spit shine look

So many helpers worked that day
Into the yawning wee hours late

Until the earth was **** and span
Every water splash, every grain of sand

From underneath to over top
Everyone had cleaned it up

Bi-weekly now she runs the ad
Inside the Farmers Almanac

Of a desperate life in need

Who will hold my hand
Will you hold my hand
Without any pretence
And even less demand

Who will sympathize
Will you sympathize
When you finally see the real me
Reflected in my eyes

Who will wipe my tears
Will you wipe my tears
Save them in a mason jar
For use in later years

Who will be the one
Will you be the one
To help save me from myself

I Sat Down To Write A Poem
Mike Hauser Nov 2019
I sat down to write another poem
Spill out a slew of rhyme
Sat down to write another poem
Jot down a mess of lines
Conjure up a new idea
Knock loose my noggin in finding it
I sat down to write another poem
But nothing comes to mind

I sat down to write another poem
Not too lame, not too deep
Sat down to write another poem
To entertain both you and me
Climb rhymes tree to the furthest limb
The one with the swing to take a swim
I sat down to write another poem
But can't seem to take the leap

I sat down to write another poem
Of all  I have to say
Sat down to write another poem
But this blank wall is in my way
With inspiration everywhere
But it's over there and I'm stuck over here
I sat down to write another poem
Perhaps today is not the day

Monty's Measuring Tape
Mike Hauser Dec 2018
From the moment they gave him the measuring tape
That's the second Monty started to measure away
Measuring this and measuring that
From the round side of rings to the square side of flat

He measured the span on the wings of a fly
The knees of the bees as they buzzed him by
He measured the toot from the sound of a flute
And the beat of a drum, Monty measured that too

He measured the space between space and time
So there were no mistakes he measured it in the light
Pulled the tail of a lion to measure its roar
The teeth on a shark but only up to row four

Monty measured the clowns from the circus in town
With a wink and a nod, the upside of down
He measured the dinner his mom sat on his plate
Then for dessert, he measured the cake

The last thing Monty did before he went to bed
Was to measure the pillow where he laid his head
And in no time at all, Monty was fast asleep
Where in between snores he measured his dreams

I talk too much
When things get rough
It's all apart
Of my nervousness

Where you're bound to find
I hide behind
More than a few
Misquoted lines

It's how I make
My great escape
From giving my
True self away

All this in spite
Of what I'm like
A country kid
That's kind of shy

With this crutch
That talks too much
To try and hide

Runaway Poem
Mike Hauser Jul 2015
I wrote a poem
I can't find hide nor hair

It must have thought
What are you nuts
Your not posting me anywhere

I think that it's
Just low on confidence
It really wasn't all that bad

And if it needs to hide
I think that I
Could throw over the title a mask

So if you see my poem
Could you send it home
And let it know that all's forgiven

Cause this week I might
Be shy a few writes
And this poet needs to make a living
I really did lose a poem...In fact I lost two that were either too terrible or too crazy to post but now that they've gone missing, once I find them, I'm going to post them as an example to themselves and to the rest of them! I'm not sure what that'll prove but it'll make me feel better...till I get comments on them...Lol!

I can no longer rely on myself
I'm the last person I could trust
You may ask the question why
Why that is is just because

Just because you think you know me
It doesn't mean you really do
Here I am new to this scene
All because of you

All because of you I can turn to
The life hidden high upon the shelf
So what I have I give it all to you
All to you and no one else

No one else gives me the comfort
From this soul that's paid the cost
You may ask why that is
Why that is is just because

There's a calmness to the air of the trailer park
As the dumpster in the back slides to the right
Underneath is where our Super Hero has his lair
And where adventure starts out every night

For years now it's been the same old routine
Belches as he wobbles to his feet
Throws the remote down on the beer stained couch
Scratches his rear at the same time picking his teeth

Yes, the night belongs to Beer Belly Batman
Who spends his time fighting petty crime
From spitting on the sidewalkers to mouth full of food talkers
Putting them back in their place and back in line

Sure he used to be a top notch crime fighter
Evil forces he always did foil
But after years and years of beating crime up
The beating on him has taken its toll

If the neighbors music is to loud feel free to call him
Nothing he likes better than knocking heads of unruly kids
Hey Punk! Pull Your Pants Up! Is his favorite motto...
Giving Super Hero Wedges like nobody's biz

I don't know about you but this much is true
I always feel a little more safe and sound
And sleep that much better at night
Knowing there's a White Trash Super Hero around

~Loves Questionnaire~
Mike Hauser Feb 2019
I was handed a questionnaire
And asked to fill it out the best I could
With #2 pencil in hand
I saw the questions were on love

I've never once questioned my love for you
I've studied hard, I've studied well
That's why the first box I marked off as true
When asked if I'd give my all to you

It asked things like would it be alright
If I held you tight the rest of my life
I marked that box all of the above
Cause isn't that what you do for love

It then asked if love was meant to last
It talked of the future in view of the past
That question was adorned in essay form
I filled up one page but could have filled two more

I started off by writing
True love only looks straight ahead
The past is past, no need looking back
And should be buried along with the dead

Which means if you dig it up enough
The only thing it does is stink
And the buried past really has
No place in loves company

Once I got through the questionnaire
I felt good about the fact
I had honestly answered all the questions there
As I handed my #2 pencil back

From the multiple choice to the true and false
Along with the final essay
I folded it up, brought it home to you my love
For the final grade

This is the last poem to ever be written
The very last rhyme to come down the line
We'll look back on it all, this thought in the making
And realize the decision was not taken light

With poetry reflecting the heart as it's given
Sometimes filling the spot in an unmade bed
Breathing into the moment words that are living
A thousand times over, what must be said

This is the last poem to grace these pages
The last piece of poetry leaving all this behind
Last in a line of heart felt words being delivered
Giving a blind notion a sliver of natural light

The last poem to show up for the party
With nothing prepared before they shut out the lights
All dressed up with no where to go
As it steps through the door in its last goodbye

Sandy Is It Safe?

Sandy is it safe?
Or should we continue to hide
Seems to me your now caffeine free
For the very first time in your life

In your endeavor I wish you luck
But please do hurry Starbucks stock just dropped
I know your doing this for you and the family
But have you stopped to think of the economy

Sandy is it safe?
Is your head drumming that jungle beat
Should Scott and the girls slip out the back
Count their losses over their lives and take to the streets

They've stuck to you like glue
Through all of life's ups and downs
If you must know the truth
They're going to miss having wife and mom around

Sandy is it safe?
Seems to be the question of the day
Wait..this is only day two, are you kidding me?!
Between you and me we were all hoping for three!!

Don't worry we just sent a search party out looking
For caffeine free 5 hour energy
We'll have you back to normal in no time
Well as normal as you'll ever be!

One last question I pose
Which brings this all to a close
Sandy is it safe?
I have a friend that's on day two a three day clean and has to go caffeine free (Oh The Horrors!) This is just a little something I came up with to cheer her up...

Mike Hauser Oct 2016
You offer God all that you've got
In the form of daily chores
All God has to say is put it away
What I want's your heart

You spend your time on His production line
When clocking out you find
Hands that stay busy make you dizzy
If God hardly comes to mind

Building fences to straddle on
With your days neither hot nor cold
There is no doubt God will spew you out
Should have been building on the soul

The only time you look for a God sign
Is when you're desperately in need
Otherwise you let it ride
Relying on human strength

Although you say you love Jesus
You're still working your way through
The needs and wants for brownie points
When all God wants is you

I ****** them up as they're floating there
Placing them gently onto the page
They help to write, what I have to say

They're mixed together with dashes and dots
Which eventually become punctuation marks
I still have a few I keep chilled in the fridge
When I need a sentence to end I crack open the lid

Apparently I'm the only one who can see

Which is fine by me cause it gives me the time

On the front porch of our twilight
Losing savings to our daylight
Sometimes forgetting who we are

Placing bets...
On who death holds up his sleeve
Being the next one to leave
While counting our lucky stars

Where we've been...
Flashes in the background
Further back than right now
As the morning is a blur

Being kept...
Alive on pills and promises
And what little money we have left
Before they show us to the door

And with that said...
We might say it all again
With who, what, where, and even when
As our minds commence to rust

Happened so fast...

Blink too fast and it's gone

Out on the empty streets
With only one poem that he recites
That's all this poet needs

It is one he wrote years ago
All for love and loss
The only poem that he holds
To his closely guarded heart

If he ever does draws a crowd
It's no more than three or four
Those that have heard him cry out loud
Can't take it any more

There's a certain sadness to his cadence
To the hurt that's in his eyes
The hopelessness of reason
That begs the question why

Why life handed him the keys
Before it drove off of the cliff
Leaving him with nothing more
Than what he has in this

Lonely poets corner
Empty saddened streets
Reciting the same poem over time
Is all he's come to need

For the likes of me and you

For the shedding of your tears
He's here to wipe each sorrowful eye
And quietly calm the fears

Don't blame God...
Every time the wind blows South
You might be the breeze that causes these
Catastrophe's to mount

Don't blame God...
When others do and you still don't
Seem to have their needs met
Remember a need is not a want

Don't blame God...
When it's clearly not his fault
To set the blame simply state your name
More often times than not

Don't blame God...
For the lack of what you have
When you tend grab more than you give
You can only blame yourself

And feel it's what we deserve
Through life's ups and downs
Through actions and words

At the moment  we're born
We start wanting our wants
Before we've even learned
Of the does and the dont's

The want's don't always add up
To what it is we should do
As pressures continue to mount
We should align with the truth

That the should's care for each other
The should's reach goals and dreams
While want's bring down one another
As they over power the needs

So let's do what we should
Not letting want's have their way
Without want's clogging life's path
Ahead should be better days

Where all my needs and all my wants

You blame it on me
I blame it on you

No early warning
This twister of fate
This destroyer of lives
This dust storm of hate

While it could be me
I still think that it's you

Then come the tears
The flash flood without warning
Into the night
Until early morning

While it might be you
you still think that it's me

If we go through a drought
In our love together
There is never a doubt
We're the perfect storm for each other

When it comes down to it
I guess it's the both of us

if you can't seem to find a reason

to just get up and go

i can tell you that no reason

is no reason at all

love
is doing a good job of
hiding from the truth

that i
have been keeping an eye
on you

if caught in mid-stare
i wouldn't know where
or what to say

i have become
an expert on
...the gaze away

the moment you turn
is when i've learned
to avert my eyes

at embarrassments request
i do my best
to not have you find

me in the dream
of you and me
that's going nowhere

if you caught my look
i'd be on the hook
of you knowing i care

if you caught me once
that'd be enough
to not know what to make

of the moment right then
as i begin once again
...the gaze away

hanging on
Mike Hauser May 2015
every second

of every minute

of every single day

i'm hanging onto sanity (reality)

as fragile as i can
Woke up with this repeating itself over and over in my head....it's going to be a good day! Lol!

Well I sometimes miss
When I was a kid
It's awfully hard
To get used to this

All this grown up stuff
Being out to lunch
As they keep passing the plate
No thank you very much

Growing bounds and leaps
Pretty as you please
What's in front, behind
and beside of me

With a wrinkle here
And a wrinkle there
Along with balding spots
In my graying hair

And a belly Buddha
Would be proud of
Since I haven't missed
Many times at lunch

With a memory
That's hard to find
As this wandering mind
Gets lost at times

So if I had the chance
Just tell me when
Show me where
And I'd do it all again
