The Handkerchief
Mike Hauser Jul 2013
I was going through my drawers today

And came across the handkerchief

I had used to dry my eyes

On the day of my fathers death

I never did wash it

Those tears hold meaning for me

Although they have long dried and gone

Never will his memory

"Shopping"
Mike Hauser Apr 2013
I needed to do some shopping
On poem ideas I was running low
So I checked out the local flyer
To the downtown poet store

Just to see what they had on sale
Some of my friends they call me cheap
But why pay full price if you don't have to
On all the rhyming words I need

The front page slapped me in the face
With the Spring Cleaning Sale Galore
Everything I needed was half price
So I headed straight to the store

I ventured up and down the isles
Filling my basket with the best of rhyme
Getting a few extras of every word
So I'd have them when the time was right

I stocked up on love and encouragement
The right words I carefully chose
Because in my experience
You can never have to many of those

I even took a few from the back
Down a darkened isle where the lights were low
Being a poet my mood can rapidly change
And what words I might need you never know

With my basket full of wonder
I felt my day of shopping done
Confidant and ready
To go home and continue writing poems

Seems like a dream
Has over taken us now
Tossed in this turmoil
I'm not quite sure how
We've all become numbers
In this nameless place
Have pity on the whole human race

We've spent years of our future
Trying to run from the past
Relying on memories
That never did last
With so many questions
Who can we ask
Where are the morals that we used to have

Whatever happened to the morals in life
We opened the window
They flew into the night
Can anyone tell me how we'll ever get by
Without the morals that once held us so tight

The fewer the heartbeats
The shorter the time
The deeper the cavern
The harder the climb
The more that we look for
The less that we find
Of the morals that we left behind

Whatever happened to the morals in life
We opened the window
They flew into the night
Can anyone tell me how we'll ever survive
*Without the morals that we once had in life

The Measure of a Man
Mike Hauser Apr 2015
How do you measure
The worth of a man

Is it in all the work
He does with his hands
Or in those he knows
He counts on as friends
Is it in how he finishes
Is it how he begins
Is it in how he fly's
Or in how he lands
Is it his trust in God
When he doesn't understand
Is it when the odd's say he can't
But he still feels that he can
Is it where he draws the line
And where he makes his stand
Or how he reacts
When there's nothing left

Is this how you measure
The worth of a man

Down On My Knees
Mike Hauser Mar 2016
When most of what I see
I just don't understand
With back against the wall
Leaving little left
When the voices in the air
Tell me that I can't
Reminding me of the things
In this life I've said

When all four walls
Are closing in on me
Having a devil of a time
As he won't let me be
When all in front of me
Looks like impossibility

That is when I feel the need
To get down on my knees

When I think about
All that God has done
Thanking him for sending
His one and only Son
When I want to give back
A portion of his love
When He forgives out right
For my many wrongs

When I think about the fact
I have been set free
When I look upon the Cross
And what it means to me
As I am thankful for the call
And that I payed it heed

That is when I feel the need
To get down on my knees

When I gaze out at the world
And the shape it's in
Looking at it deeply
Into the sinful heart of man
When the flame of torment and sorrow
Is being continually fanned
As I see it setting fire
To a once great sovereign land

When I know the answer
But I need the strength
To shout it from the mountain tops
To the valleys deep
When looking for the answers
That keep eluding me

That is when I feel the need
To get down on my knees

Mid-West Taco Stand
Mike Hauser Aug 2013
I frequent a little taco stand
Every time I'm out in the Mid-West
With Elvis behind the counter
Dressed in his leather best

Janice Joplin doing the dishes
With enchilada breath
Arguing with the fry cook Jim Morrison
Over the  best way of cheating death

Jimi Hendrix works the tables
That they have set up out front
Recommending the mushroom taco
With the psychedelic crunch

Marilyn Monroe...the entertainment
Nightly serenades the gents
Wearing her favorite T-shirt
Bobby Kennedy for president

I highly recommend the little taco stand
If you ever find yourself out West
Who's going to show up to take your order that day
Could be anybody's guess...

~Attitude~
Mike Hauser Jul 2014
In the cool of the morning
The fever ran high
With no earthly warning
Darkness challenged the light
You can toss out the past
What little we had
One bite of the apple
Hello cruel world...so sad

It's that attitude, we've held on forever
What ever the mood
It's a crazy tune, we're humming whatever
Forgetting your words too soon
Because of our attitude

There are dark clouds above
To wash the sin from below
You showed us, you warned us
We swear we still didn't know
You drowned out the past
And the sin of man's grasp
As in the time of Noah
The flood waters here are rising so fast

With our attitude, we've held on forever
What ever the mood
It's a crazy tune, we're humming whatever
Forgetting your words way too soon
With our attitude

From present time to the fall
If we've learned anything at all
It's that God has a plan
But lets us make the call
Still with the need to ask
Why it's all gone so bad
Blaming everything else
When all this time it's been ourselves

And our attitude, we've held on forever
What ever the mood
It's a crazy tune, we've been humming forever
Forgetting your words way too soon
With this attitude

You sent us your Son
To take on the sin of the world
Laid down His crown for us all
A crucifixion so cruel
To reconcile the past
The only option you had
Bringing creation back together
Washed in your glory forever will last

To change our attitude, we've held on forever
What ever our mood
Now singing praises to you, in the tune of forever
Giving our all unto you
With our new attitude

She dresses up in moonbeams
For a feeling that she likes
Wears stardust as her makeup
Shines throughout the night
Saturn's rings hold her hair in place
As she shoots across the sky

The galaxy has not been the same
Since this solar breeze arrived

She comes on like a comet
A nova in disguise
Shear brilliance leaves you baffled
A wonder to the eyes
The girl who dresses up in moonbeams
Leaving trails across the night

the man in amsterdam
Mike Hauser Mar 2015
i met a man in amsterdam
with mirrors on his head
take a look at yourself
was all that he said

i took a look long and hard
then had to turn away
i didn't like any of
the looks it is i gave

i met a man in amsterdam
that held up a sign
saying lay out for me all your needs
but take all that you like

he gave me what i needed
in mind bending thought
most of it he gave for free
the rest of it i bought

i met a man from amsterdam
just left of the canal
he held ******* in the air
and said that's what it's about

with no argument from me
as i peacefully understood
the man i met in amsterdam
in his corner of the world

Candlelight Vigil
Mike Hauser Apr 2015
They stand in fragile circles
Lighting candles for their dead
As the memories that float on the breeze
Are all that they have left

The tears that pass between them
Have a somber silence that's deafening
You can feel the souls they're crying for
Touch them on the winds of change

As they light another candle
Another day goes by
With the tears that keep on flowing
Where they are forced to wonder why

Grateful All Around
Mike Hauser Aug 2014
I'm grateful for most everything
One is the fact that I don't cuss
I'm grateful for this shiny dime
To ride this city bus
That takes me to where you are
Because I'm grateful for the both of us
I guess if you have to ask
I'm grateful most for love

But I'm also grateful for the sunshine
And grateful for the rain
That washes away the dirt and grime
To make things new again
That's sometimes what tear drops do
Guess they both act one and the same
Imagine the power if you combined
Teardrops in the rain

I'm grateful that I thought of this
So I could write it down
As I travel on this city bus
To your side of town
Where I started being grateful
Because to you is where I'm bound
Guess I'll just name this poem of mine
Grateful all around

Today's Elephant Scare
Mike Hauser Sep 2018
This morning
I went to the kitchen
Opened the pantry
Found my elephant missing
Along with my favorite coffee mug
And my Better Homes and Gardens subscription
At first of course
I thought of the worst
Elephantnapped
Is what came to mind
And me right here
Playing into my fears
That's the end
Of that friend of mine
But then I thought of the refrigerator
Where I know he goes to cool down and relax
And that's where he was
Between the yogurt and mustard
Lounge chair, second shelf in the back
With magazine and coffee mug in hand

Mike Hauser Mar 2017
i've got a hummingbird heart
that flutters back and forth
whenever it's startled by
loves slightest noise

fancy's itself
as being free
but is always drawn back
to it's basic needs

this hummingbird heart
flutters back and forth
always in search of
what it does not know

if it does not know
what it does not have
then how long can this
hummingbird heart last

i've got a hummingbird heart
that fly's on the wind
most times settles on nothing
then fly's off again

this hummingbird heart
all it want's is to feed
from one point to another
and all points in between

taking for granted
the sweetness it craves
this hummingbird heart
gives so much away

"TABOO LOVE"
Mike Hauser Apr 2013
My Mamma cried
When she'd heard what I'd done
My Daddy went back inside
And he grabbed his gun

I'd met a ******* the other side of town
Of course I am white and of course she is brown
I don't rightly care cause we're both in love
And I ain't gonna let her suffer none

We's from Birmingham
Down South Birmingham Alabama you see
If'in you must know the year
I'd say a shameful 1963

There was unrest amongst the people
Which was bad enough
But it was doubly troublesome
On our taboo love

Deep segregation kept our worlds apart
Something the youth of the day couldn't see
Outside color don't matter, it's what's in the heart
That's the hold she has over me

Not really sure things have changed all that much
Though it's our nature to want to pretend
I'm not much into caring what others might think
Sometimes you gotta stand up like a man

I'm telling this tale from my front porch swing
As I listen to my Grandchildren's playful screams
While holding hands rocking back and forth
My lovely brown skinned beauty and me
Mike Hauser Aug 2018
As I strolled  down Beaker Street
A neon sign flashed in front of me

That said "Only Serious Poets Need Apply"
(Blink) "Need Apply" (Blink) "Need Apply"

So it was I thought to myself
I can think of nobody else

As serious a poet as I

I looked to the right and the left
Feeling pretty confident about myself

And decided to take a gander inside

The room it was totally dark
In the corner was the tiniest of sparks

I did a stately poetic stroll in that direction

Feeling I might have made a mistake
This thought occurred a little too late

But of course this whole scene might just be window dressing

A voice said we don't need a poet at all
Just someone dumb and gullible

That's the moment in my pants I started messing

Turns out it was a mad scientist
With a masters degree in craziness

What were his dastardly plans I could only be guessing

I was grabbed by a couple of ugly thugs
Who highly dislike deodorant and mouthwash

******* and flown off to the smallest of islands

Where they did unspeakable experiments on me
In the first, second, and third degree

All because to insanity they took a liking

When it was they were finally done
With what those nut jobs consider good fun

Don't know how many walls they had me climbing

Daily now I plan my escape
I only hope that I'm not too late

When the opportunity arrives I hope I don't blow it

I find it so hard to believe
That this all has happened to little ole me

And Why?
Because of me being such a serious poet

holds her hand out to him

I'm Cheating On You
Mike Hauser Feb 2014
Yes it's true I'm cheating on you
Blatantly with another site
I'm so enamored by her poetry
We're now hanging out  in broad daylight

I keep going back and forth
Between both you and it
Pouring out poetry deep from my heart
Now I'm not sure I can ever quit

I do feel a tad bit guilty
This sharing of my poetic love
But like you heard, with the written word
I can't seem to get enough

She accepts me for who I am
Even welcomed me with open arms
I was thinking the whole time in the back of my mind
What could possibly be the harm

Now I feel I'm in way to deep
To swim out of this cheaters stream
The current is swift and the banks are steep
Guess I'll just drown in sweet misery

I'm so glad to get this off of my chest
Perhaps it'll take away some of the guilt
Although I sometimes hang with that other harlot
I want you to know I love you still

Yes the rumors are true that I'm cheating on you
With another poetry site
A month ago who would have known
I'd have more than one mistress  in my life
Well I certainly feel better now!
How about you?

Mail Order Personalities
Mike Hauser Nov 2013
I'm checking the post daily
Can't tell you how exciting this is for me
Since I called the 1-800 number
From that mail order magazine

While one day sitting at the dentist
I picked up said magazine
A full page ad which made me gasp
A colorful array of personalities

I've never really had much of one on my own
So I ordered a couple dozen
Sitting here anxious for my order
And so far I've seen nothing

I'm wearing a path to the mailbox
It should have been here by now
When it does arrive I'm first taking out Impatient
Then placing a call to tell them about themselves

I hope I remembered to order one Romantic
Cause I'd sure like to impress Mary Lou
As it now stands I feel less a man
Around her I don't know what to say or do

Imagine my surprise when the box finally arrives!
I open it up with a slight giggle
Just like that the personalities fall into my lap
For a moment I felt just like Sybil

Lets see there's one that's Strong, one that's Flirty, one that's Shy, one that's Quirky
One that looks like it's Mighty Proud
A personality that's Fun, Debonair, a Serious one
All I know is I want to try them all out

These days when you see me around...AKA "The Man About Town"
The one that has the large following of friends
Everyone loves the tales that I tell, now that I tell them so well
The way I weave them from beginning to end

They all want to hang out with me, there's something special they see
Looks like I've come out of my shell
Now I don't think twice as I jump into life
Since things have been going so well

And all those personalities I own, I now leave those all home...
I keep the box locked high up on a shelf
I found the best personality I have is the one I was born with
And that people tend to like me for myself

I raise to you on each new morning
If you'll just carry me
Throughout these many days

For I am weak and I am tired
Life can be a beast of burden
More than ever I need the strength
Of your Amazing Grace

Your going to have to do this
For I am no longer able
My spirit's weakened
My wills the same

I need your hand
In all that I am doing
Lord, please hold and guide me
In your Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace
A sound that's never sweeter
Amazing Love
You've set aside for me
Taking my place
That love is ever deeper

Can't help but follow you
Wherever it is you go
I'm your biggest fan
Thought you might want to know

I watch your every move
Been everywhere you've been
That my love is just how much
It is you mean to me

Oh, I almost forgot
So I don't cause a fright
That is my wild eye reflection
In your window every night

It's a part of what I do
A big part of my plan
As I spend my days with you
As your biggest fan

I have a lock of hair
I bought off eBay
Would you mind if I stopped by
Just to authenticate

What I bought was ***** blonde
When I know you are brunette
Though they both look good on you
On top your pretty head

Are you dating anyone
Have a love that's true
Cause I could be that special one
That special one for you

I've already been on your tour bus
That was my lipstick heart in the back
In fact right now I'm writing this
From atop the luggage rack

Remember when you looked at me
I was in the 18th row
It was like we shared a secret
That only you and I both know

That secret being I'm here for you
I know you understand
You and I were meant to be
Cause I'm your biggest fan

Contemplating the versatility of Mayo
And all that can be done with it
From the slathering on whilst sun bathing
To globbing it on my bologna sandwich

I find it tantalizing to the tastebuds
And it sure does sizzle in the sun
I once applied to much and set my toes on fire
Lucky for me I lost only one

Thank goodness I was near the water
When my foot went up in flames
I guess that's why God gives us ten toes
In case we lose any along the way

As with anything you can even get bored with Mayonnaise
That's why I strive for different ideas
So I put my brain juices into overdrive
And came up with this amazing list

Instead of milk in a shake you can use Mayo
Please wait till the end for all the applause
I'm still having trouble dealing with thickness
And have yet to get it through the straw

Perhaps if I leave out the ice cream
And just add Mayo, milk chocolate, and ice
I guess I'll just keep on experimenting
When it's ready you can be the first in line

And who doesn't like mayonnaise on anchovie pizza
The perfect combination at best
Even better than peanut butter and jelly
If only I can figure out how to package it

Mayonnaise is also the perfect conditioner
You could leave it in your hair for days I suppose
But try to avoid to much time in the sun
After all...remember the toes

I'm going back to my room for more ideas now
Or as I like to call it..."The Mayo Think Tank"
I know my family thinks I'm a genius
Cause they always leave me in there for days

So young and newly married
Hanging on by the thread of love
Sometimes though in life we see
That thread isn't wound tight enough

Through the daily struggles
Most of them unseen
What happened to the newlywed
Where went all the dreams

Holding on
Barely holding on...

A father and husband out of work
A family living out of the car
Is this the American dream we've built
Is this now where we are

Cardboard serves a purpose
As a bed and a homemade sign
To keep the cold off of the floor
Hey brother can you spare a dime

Holding on
Barely holding on...

The doctors diagnosis
Doesn't give much hope for life
Just a simple six months ago
There was no thought of dying

Even less hope in your case
Just prolonging time
You could spend what little you have left
Or go ahead and say your goodbyes

Holding on
Barely holding on...

No matter your life's lot
The position that you hold
We're all in the same boat on the same stream
Trying to stay afloat

There are so many different scenarios
Which could haunt many a page
That in life continually follow us
Throughout all our days of

Holding on
Barely holding on...

I woke up in a Spaghetti Western
Not sure how this happened to me
Standing on the dusty streets of Laredo
With six desperado's down the street

I gazed off to my left
As a tumbleweed went tumbling by
There was a dog howling in the distance
With an odd sheen to the western sky

Can't say I wasn't trigger happy
With my hand inching towards my gun
Still wondering how it is I appeared here
In this B-movie western

Women and children were running for cover
They knew what was soon to go down
Truth is you can expect nothing less
When you live in a Spaghetti Western town

Pecos Bill was the first to draw
As I shot him between the eyes
Want you to know I took no pleasure in
Watching the other five men die

As I rode off into the sunset
The credits behind me scrolled
How I woke up inside of this movie
Is a mystery I will never know

Life Is Like A Toaster
Mike Hauser Nov 2013
Ever since my early days of youth
I've been questioning
All the hidden secrets of life
And exactly what it means

So imagine my excitement
When I climbed the mountain top
And asked the man of wisdom
Just what it is he thought

Where he said...

Life is like a toaster
With people dropping in and popping out
Some may stay in the heat of life for too long
And find themselves burned out

Life is like a toaster
If you're kept down long enough
The heat that's applied to your outsides
Only strengthens your inner crust

Life is like a toaster
Some people are shiny on the outside
But lift them up and what you see
Are the crumbs they leave behind

After all these years of searching
I climbed high enough to learn the truth
With the meaning of life now by my side
I knew just what I had to do

I went straight back home to my people
The ones that I could help the most
I started at the local breakfast diner
Where I ordered up some toast

I drive a truck
Which makes me a manly man among men
To those sissified 70's
I never caved in

Heck yea, that's country not disco
You hear blaring in the back
Which sometimes rattles the triggers lose
On my shotgun rack

And yes I do live down South
But not a redneck per say
My camouflage leisure suit
I only wear holidays

Or out to special dinners
Say Denny's or Huddle House
You know those fancy places
Where there's no spitting allowed

So getting anything more outta me
I wish you good luck
Now where was I going with this?
Oh yea...I drive a truck

I hear the Earth as she laughs
In the flowers that I plant
It's like they are all tickling
As they bloom in early Spring
I hear the Earth as she laughs

I see the Earth as she smiles
With her dimpled daffodils
She keeps grinning back at us
In a pink peony blush
I see the Earth as she smiles

I hear her chuckle in the breeze
To the delight of daylilies
With each laugh they all know
It brings new colors to their fold
As the Earth chuckles in the breeze

I have often heard it said
Every time the Earth laughs
Another flower is set to bloom
I guarantee that this is true
Every time the Earth laughs
I'm on a friends FB site she created that gives a quote a day and I thought it would be a fun challenge to try a write a poem on each one.

The earth laughs in flowers...

I've been collecting ear wax
Since the belly button lint dust fire went bad
I lost all my dignity in that fiasco
So ear wax is all that I have left

Believe you me, it's not easy
Coming up with another scheme
After burning the whole town down to the ground
To get a single soul to look or even listen to me

But that fateful day that I dug deep
And pulled a replica of the Eiffel Tower out of my ear
I knew that fame and fortune lay before me
My time had arrived, my time was here

Who should I call first over my artful discovery
The Post?  The Enquirer?  The Times?
No I would call The Museum Of Modern Art in NYC
For the Art World would soon be mine

I knew I had to ratchet it up a notch
One piece of ear wax art might be a fluke
So I got out my brush...the Q-tip
And removed a portrait of John Wayne AKA The Duke

Since I live in a hippie commune in the woods
Little furry creatures would always stop by
To gaze upon the artful process
Squirrels can be the best of critics...no lie!

Which gave me the idea with all the left over ear wax
I sculptured a mini-amusement park with mini-arcades
And charged the woodland creatures nuts and berries
Which helped feed the hippies with whom I stay

It wasn't long after that I received the letter
Stating that art had a need for me
I've become known as The Andy Warhol of The Art World
With abstract ear wax being my specialty

Now I go to all the major "Who Does"
Where everybody knows my name
As I create masterpieces right before their eyes
Just don't hold it to close to the flame

Who would have ever thought that ear wax
Would be the perfect medium
To jet propel this Simpleton
To Art World stardom and beyond
If you need to catch up on this insanity....
The Great Belly Button Lint Fire of 93' is down deep in my pile of craziness.
Good Luck!

The Color of Love
Mike Hauser Nov 2017
If love was a color
What one would you choose
A bright red bouquet
Or oceans of blue
The color of Fall
On a soft afternoon
Or would you decide
On the color chartreuse

Would it be the deep green
Of a walk in the park
Or the brilliant sunset
As the day's growing dark
Maybe the color that beats
Inside of the heart
With so many colors
Where would you start

Could it be the color of Spring
As her flowers set bloom
A gold wedding bells ring
On a warm afternoon
A mud red country road
On which to whistle a tune
Or would you choose them all
If you could choose

There's a calmness to the air of the trailer park
As the dumpster in the back slides to the right
Underneath is where our Super Hero has his lair
And where adventure starts out every night

For years now it's been the same old routine
Belches as he wobbles to his feet
Throws the remote down on the beer stained couch
Scratches his rear at the same time picking his teeth

Yes, the night belongs to Beer Belly Batman
Who spends his time fighting petty crime
From spitting on the sidewalkers to mouth full of food talkers
Putting them back in their place and back in line

Sure he used to be a top notch crime fighter
Evil forces he always did foil
But after years and years of beating crime up
The beating on him has taken its toll

If the neighbors music is to loud feel free to call him
Nothing he likes better than knocking heads of unruly kids
Hey Punk! Pull Your Pants Up! Is his favorite motto...
Giving Super Hero Wedges like nobody's biz

I don't know about you but this much is true
I always feel a little more safe and sound
And sleep that much better at night
Knowing there's a White Trash Super Hero around

I Don't Love You Anymore
Mike Hauser Sep 2014
I don't love you any more

Nor do I love you any less
With you I feel I have reached the peak
Of pure happiness

That's why I really can't stand you

Being all by yourself
Need you to be here with me
And nobody else

Because I hate you

Being away from me
If this is all a test of time
I've failed it miserably

It's all over

Written on my face
The love I have for you my dear
Could never be replaced

So yes I don't love you any more*

Nor do I love you any less
Because without you to keep me grounded
*We both know my life would be a mess

Amazing Love, Amazing Grace
Mike Hauser Apr 2014
This is my prayer Lord
I raise to you each new morning
If you'll just carry me
Throughout these many days

For I am weak and I am tired
Life can be a beast of burden
More than ever now I need the strength
Of your Amazing Grace

You are going to have to do this Lord
For I am no longer able
My spirits weakened
My wills the same

I need your hand
In all that I am doing
Lord, please hold and guide me
In your Amazing Grace

Amazing grace
A sound that's never sweeter

Amazing Love
You've set aside for me

Taking my place
That love is ever deeper

Amazing Love, Amazing Grace

I walked past my pantry
Late one Friday night
To the sounds of what appeared to be
The goings on of a party inside

I grabbed a hold the latches
Swung wide open the door
With absolutely no earthly idea
Of what was soon in store

Colorful lights were flashing
Somewhere in the back
I moved aside the ketchup and mayo
To see where it was at

I took out the pickles and saltine's
So I could better see
What all the commotion was inside
Of my food pantry

That's when I saw the flashing lights
Inside the jar of Nutella
I picked it up right away
Me being a some what curious fella

As I held it at eye level
It vibrated in my hands
In what felt like a driving rhythm
From a 70's Disco band

Can't say I wasn't nervous
As I loosened up the lid
No telling what was going on inside
What dangers lay ahead

With both hands slightly shaking
I removed the rounded top
There was a party in the making
And it was going on non stop

The Nutella had it's boogie on
Or if you prefer, it's groove
Whatever you wish to call it
A party was the mood

There was a strobe light and confetti
Even a tiny Disco ball
As I gazed over the edge of the jar
I saw banners wall to wall

I guess you could say Nutella
Is quite the party treat
That may cost you at the grocery store
But once home the cover charge is free

The Cafeteria Lady
Mike Hauser Nov 2014
Do you see the way she looks at me
As she asks what I'd like to eat
I'm not sure of what to say to her
But was that just a wink?

I'm not the only one standing here
That m'lady wines and dines
Yet another school year
In the Cafeteria line

You know she had me with the hair net
Matching the color of her eyes
The **** way she slops spaghetti
On the plate next to my fries

There's really not a lot
A young school boy can do
As I dream about her from breakfast to lunch
In one continuous drool

She's the Cafeteria lady
Not to keen on her collard greens
But she does serve up a mess of mean
Nachos and young school boy dreams

Tombstone
Mike Hauser May 2013
There's a tombstone on a hillside
At its feet is muddy ground
It can't wait for me to get there
I know...cause it calls my name out loud

And this tombstone on the hillside
Knows when that day will come
And that no one will be there to morn for me
As in life, my death will morn alone

Rhyming Robot
Mike Hauser Sep 2016
I hired a robot
To write poems for me
Now I'm able to rhyme
In modern technology

Though his imagination
Isn't quite up to par
The relaxation I get
Outweighs it by far

From 0 to 1
To 1 0 1
He likes to write
In binary bytes for fun

As long as the rhymes
Keep flowing from him
He can have all that is mine
From the head of my pen

If all this goes well
We'll just wait and see
But I might even hire
A robot to read poems for me

I want to live in a Norman Rockwell painting
Where I'm surrounded by the simple times
If you don't know what I mean let me explain it
It consists of front porch swings and Mom's apple pie

Sunday afternoons in Grandma's kitchen
Lazy fishing days down by the lake
Or in a Soda Shop drinking Chocolate Malts with cherries on top
As I while away the day Norman's way

Riding bikes down hills the whole time laughing
Cowboys, Indians, and Pirates all in one day
With sunsets painted red and no strangers met
No secrets kept to wanna give away

Life on parade the American way
Pride in your family and friends
Helping each other no matter race, creed, or color
Starting each meal out with an amen

Picnics at the park, hot dogs and gaming
Potato sack and three-legged racing
Nothing like today's grind taxing both the heart and mind
Which to me desperately needs replacing
With life in a Norman Rockwell painting

A 50's Poem
Mike Hauser Dec 2013
Shoop, Shoop
Shoe, ***, ***
Shoop, Shoop
Shoe, ***

The moment I laid eyes on you
I knew it was true love
You were sharing a root beer float with your friends
Down at the soda shop

I looked debonair in my Pompadour
You cute in your poodle skirt
I took out my comb to slick down the sides
As you smiled, giggled, and twirled

I asked if you'd like to go out
Just you and me on a date
I picked you up at seven o'clock
In my 56' Chevrolet

Your father gave me a stern look
Your mother a gleam in her eye
He asked where we were going
Why to church sir, I said with a smile

Shoop, Shoop
Shoe, ***, ***
Shoop, Shoop
Shoe, ***

I took you to the drive in
Bobs Burgers and Late Night Shakes
Afterwards we both went dancing
At the Hop just down the street

You had my heart all in a flutter
As we slowed danced all night
It was then I knew for certain
That I would make you my lovely wife

I got you home way past your curfew
Your dads silhouette by the front door
You said I can't go back to that
I pressed the peddle to the floor

So here we are these many years later
Me as your husband you as my wife
With our grand kids playing about our feet
Thinking back to that fateful night

Shoop, Shoop
Shoe, ***, ***
Shoop, Shoop

Hoarding
Mike Hauser May 2013
It all started out so innocently
A thrift store here, a garage sale there
Anyways, Lord knows how bad I needed
The chartreuse rug of that polyester bear

It goes perfect in my kitchen
Though I can barely see the floor
Just need to move a few piles that grew
From me buying trinkets by the score

Some say I'm a crazy hoarder
I've seen the show and I'm not that bad
Anyway who doesn't need
A stuffed albino Siamese cat

Then there's all the broken plates of china
That I got for a steal
If I ever do find my stove again
I'll use them for my next meal

Why ask why I save all these milk jugs
You never do know when
A herd of cattle will be passing through
The middle of my den

You may say crazy hoarder
I may say I think not
When I look at pile after pile
Of all the treasures that I've got

If you ever care to visit
Just step over this, crawl over that
Till you come to that little itty bitty empty spot
Where we can sit back and relax
And have a little chat,
over this this and that,
maybe why it is ducks quack,
is it brains that they lack,
that my friend is whack...

Crazy Hoarder?!?
Don't make me laugh...

The Alligator Chomp
Mike Hauser Apr 2014
In the South of Florida
In the middle of the swamp
There's a little dance we all do
Called the Alligator Chomp

It gets your arms a flapping
And a tapping of the toes
Right along side the cedar stump
In the middle of the boat

Form your fingers into gator teeth
Then slap your hands out front
That's there's what we call in these parts
The Alligator Chomp

The swamp gets rather lively
It's a scene like nothing else
As the gators keep in beat
With the slapping of the tails

Never stop the arms from flapping though
That'd be your last mistake
Instead of the Alligator Chomp
You'd become Alligator Bait

It happens all to often
When someone falls off of the boat
They sink straight to the bottom
Into some alligators throat

We surely do miss our friends
As do their wives and kids
We ain't seen hide nor hair of them
Since their last gator dance

So if you find yourself in Florida
In the middle of the swamp
We'd love to have you join us
In some good old fashion Alligator Chomp

I thought about this long and hard
In fact I thought about it all the time
What would happen to belly button lint
If you set the stuff on fire

I collected more than enough
Over the years to see this through
So I went and invited a few friends along
The word it spread and the crowd it grew

All the folk from the town came out
They'd been collecting belly button lint just like I had
Not quite as impressive a pile as mine
I guess I'm the biggest belly button lint dust collecting man
That's (B.B.B.L.D.C.M.) if you want to simplify who it is I am

You might think that's something to be proud of
And believe me when I say that I am
After I got through signing autographs
We proceeded with my grand plan

The crowd stepped up one by one
To toss their lint onto the pile
Coming close to blocking out the moon
As the pile grew ever higher

(Finally the time had come to light up
the famed belly button lint dust fire)

It was Frankie who spoke up first
And said he'd be honored to flick his bic
That was the very last time we saw any of him
Frankie and the lint lit up like a rocket ship

When the shock wore off I turned around
And saw the whole town up in flames
I've had a lot of great ideas before
I'm not quite sure this was one of them

I now live in a hippie commune in the woods
Since my towns no longer there
It's kind of lonely without Frankie around
Although there's still that lingering hint of burning hair

I no longer collect belly button lint these days
I sure learned my lesson with that
Haven't worked out the details of my next grand idea
But I can tell you it involves a big ball of my ear wax

The Jealousy of Love
Mike Hauser Dec 2019
We're all told to be careful
It's been known to break some hearts
In the mad rush to be helpful
The jealousy of love

It'll slip up on you in a frenzy
Ripping out your foolish heart
When you least expect you have the need
The jealousy of love

How many times have you been warned
Far more often than not
And yet here you are back at the door
The jealousy of love

Like a fruit, forbidden you
Bitter to the tongue
As it sits in wait to make its move
The jealousy of love

Caught up in the dilemma
Do you stay or move along
With no one the clear winner
The jealousy of love

Sunny and Stormy Weather

Sunny and Stormy Weather
Were sisters through and through
They did everything together
Morning, night, and noon
They hung outside most all the time
Cause that's what Weather sisters do

Sunny and Stormy Weather
Closer than any friend
Both knowing what really matters
Though they still have they're differences
They hung tight to what was right
Wouldn't let those differences do them in

Sunny Weather loved to smile
The way sunny people do
Catches on after awhile
Changes the attitude
Sunny's disposition brightened those who looked and listened
But then again that's what sunny people do

Not so with Stormy Weather
She never found much to smile about
Though her sister dearly loves her
That's the difference between them no doubt
They both get along like birds in song
That's not hard to figure out

Sunny and Stormy Weather
Were sisters through and through
They did everything together
Morning, night, and noon
They hung outside most all the time
Cause that's what Weather sisters do

Blackbird oh Blackbird
Where is your proud song
I heard you sing in the sixties
Aren't you still downtrodden and all

Have you grown complacent
Did they clip your wings
I marched with your Fathers
They wouldn't hear of such a thing

Why was it they suffered
If not for the chance to be free
They had their eyes on the future
Is this what they wanted to see

The cage that contains you
The latch is on the inside
Blackbird in you is the power
To take freedoms ride

Blackbird oh Blackbird
Where is your proud song
If you'll sing it again
This time we'll all sing along
