Brain Scratching 101

Have you ever had a major itch
Deep inside your brain
Where your whole face does a Chubby Checkers twist
Driving you erratically down crazy lane

You need to find that special something
To cram far enough up your nose
And if you can't get to it that way
There's that hole just above the earlobe

I search around my place frantically
When I come across a paper clip
Bending it to the perfect size and length
So in my canal of choice it will fit

I slide it in as far as it will go
Which causes a sever twitching of the eye
My left foot starts to tingle
As I lose all feeling down my right side

Clearly that didn't work
So I search around some more
When I come across a #2 pencil
Feeling this is a major score

I use the end with the erasure
Don't want to break the lead off in my head
Everyone knows lead poisoning makes you stupid
And I am way far away from that!

So this time around I try the ear canal
When I wiggle it back and forth over a certain spot
My legs start to prance in a 70's disco dance
As I let out a rapid succession of barks

Any fool can clearly see
I need something long and sharp
Not a knife, I've never been that dumb in life
Now where's that old game of Lawn Darts

I search long and hard in the garage for the game
Then remember my wife threw it away
After the unfortunate incident with the neighbors
I never did care for that dog of theirs anyways

So I'm back to square one of my searching
When the broom handle catches my eye
It's a little wide so I get out my pliers
And stretch my nostrils to twice their normal size

I jam it in as far as I can
Giving it all that I have got
I scratch and scratch and laugh and laugh
I either just gave myself a lobotomy or hit the perfect spot
But what can I say either way it's okay
Just as long as the itching has stopped

With every pitch that's tossed
You have a choice
You could be less
Or you could be more

It's all in the catch
That's thrown your way
In how you handle it
In how it makes your day

You can take the control
Or let it control you
Go down with the ship
Or get up and do

Learn from mistakes
When playing the game
Not give up on it
Get up again and again

With every pitch
You have a choice
You could be less
Or you could be more

People here
People there
are much
the same
everywhere
early late
i don't care
color skin
style of hair
we're all in
the shape
we're in
short or fat
tall or thin
it's a fact
next of kin
one big heap
family of man
we all run
this crazy race
call it human
for a name
like i said
much the same
and to save
it's not too late
unless
People here
People there
show concern
show they care
never learn
get nowhere
with People here
People there

I'm giving God the go ahead
To pull off layers in my life
All the ones that gunk me up
I've accumulated over time

The first one that he pulls on
Hurts but it's my pride
All because I think that it's
The easiest to find

The next one that he yanks at
Is my stingy layer of self
The one that thinks about only me
And leaves out everyone else

While it hurts to lose these layers
They're ones I can do without
That's when I hear the small whisper
Making me wonder what God's found now

The one I'm holding tight to
As anyone can plainly see
The very one I hate to lose
That would be my layer of greed

When that painful episode
Is finally lying in the dust
Here's God with a knowing nod
Pulling at my lust

As he knows this layer sometimes
Gets itself confused with love
God struggles with nothing
And believe me my layers are mighty tough

He also takes the envy
And rips it in his hands
Replacing in my heart and head
I'm happy for what they have

With each layer that God peals
I feel a freer man
Why do I so long tightly hold on
To all of this mess I can

I see this year will be a year
Of God pealing layers off
I know in the end it will be a win
And well worth any cost

you may not remember
me now by name
or the promises made
on our wedding day

through the thick and the thin
to have and to hold
from the days of our youth
to the foothold of old

whatever is thrown
in our direction my love
it never will be
enough to break us up

even if you
forget who i am
a promise is a promise
and needs to be kept

through good times and bad
till death do us part
though appearances change
love is still where we are

memory may falter
and in time quickly fade
but i remember the alter
and the promises made
I've seen several family members succumb to memory loss over the last several years which is the reason for this and several poems I've written with this subject in mind...

for you & i

have got me thinking
this moment in time
has nothing missing

when it comes to love
when it comes to us
when it comes to the place we belong

for you & i

are both the reason
we'll survive
this open season

when it comes to us
when it comes to love
we'll ride it all out in a poem

for you & i

are meant to be here
with open skies
to make the way clear

when it comes to love
when it comes to us
when it comes to how it is done

for you & i
