My Fire
Mary Holz Dec 2012
Sparks from the fire float into the night, pretending to be fireflies
Ashes from the fire reminds me of lost souls, searching for a way back into life
Smoke from the fire surrounds and blinds me, like bad memories
Flames from the fire reach out to me, beckoning me to embrace them
Smells from the fire consume me, acting like chloroform
Crackling from the fire puts me in reality, sounding like guns in the distance
Color from the fire convinces me of anger, but also of beauty
Heat from the fire warms me, so much like my hatred
Embers from the fire glow with motivation to prove something

The fire in me is what makes me alive

Identity Crisis
Mary Holz Dec 2012
Fight the anchor bringing you down
Cut the ties that make you drown
Say goodbye to the souls
Who have the master controls
Over you and your actions
Turn your back on the distractions
Look forward to the road ahead
To look beyond the unsaid
Leave behind the reminders of your past
Forget about your time as an outcast
Walk away from your greatest mistakes
Step on the gas and don’t hit the brakes
Don’t lose another battle, win the war
Destroy the forces that destroyed you before
Take your words and scream them out
Make everyone hear what they’re without
Wake up from the nightmares you have each day
Live your own dreams and don’t let them stray
Cut off the strings holding you still
Act on your own, by your individual will
Force your independence, make a stand
Get rid of constraints, the judgmental brand
Take a breath without asking permission
Never again commit submission
Wonder how you had let this grow
How you didn’t see this coming, didn’t know
Lose the wool covering your sight
Save yourself from blindness in order to see the light
Gaze into the illumination
Get away from frustration
Find who you are when no one’s around
Their opinions just ran you in the ground
Shut out the bad to become the good
Burn the hate like firewood
Earn your deserved liberty
Accept yourself as your identity

Elevator
Mary Holz Mar 2013
Looking for love is like waiting for an elevator,
waiting patiently for something to move you.
Not knowing who will be behind those doors
And once you’re in, what direction you’ll go.
Sometimes you’ll be stuck with bad people,
but they will leave, not extending their stay.
More people will call the elevator to their floor.
You will go to their level, but not stay there.
Soon the one will step in and meet your gaze,
then you’ll always be with your new love.
There are ups and downs, unwelcome guests,
and decisions to make about where to go
If you’ve found the on, don’t let them leave.
Ride out the rest of your journey together
until the elevator stops and one of you gets out

My Forever Valentine
Mary Holz Apr 2013
Every day you become my valentine
Mine for every moment in every dream
You do not need to buy me chocolate
Or flowers to go with my jewelry
Just give me a promise to stay around
Be there for me, forever and always,
And I will be yours if that is okay
It might not be February fourteenth
But you can still be my valentine now
Be mine forever and I will be yours

Destiny
Mary Holz Mar 2013
We are soulmates, kept apart by time
To not have met would be the worse crime
Fate had us together, first as friends
growing stronger as each text sends
Destined to be more, wanting to be more
I then felt the love I never had before
Facing the skeptics by being together
supporting each other through the worst weather
Star-crossed lovers, due to fate
falling deeper in love with each date
A love that most people don't understand
they say we don't mean it, they can't comprehend
that we are meant for each other's heart
Never to be broken or kept apart

Single on Valentine's Day
Mary Holz Dec 2012
Pretty flowers die
Chocolates just melt
Balloons float to the sky
Kisses are only felt
Money gets spent
Cards get thrown away
Perfume is just a scent
Poems are cliché
But if you like that:
Happy Valentine’s Day

I am this girl
Mary Holz Jan 2013
I’m the girl who nobody knows
I’m the girl who doesn’t pose
I’m the girl who sits quietly in back
I’m the girl who has a panic attack
I’m the girl who can never sleep
I’m the girl whose pain is deep
I’m the girl who appears to be shy
I’m the girl who tries not to cry
I’m the girl whose heart is broken
I’m the girl who is always outspoken
I’m the girl who tries to be good
I’m the girl who is misunderstood

Death by Burden
Mary Holz Dec 2012
if it's a free country,
why can you control what I think?
I don't think I'm really free
from your lies that weigh me down till I sink
this burden is an anchor
it's a life sentence
and I can't cash out like a banker.
I think of my fate, but I don't wince
nobody knows the pain I hold
but I'm not complaining, I accept the facts
don't hate me because I broke the mold.
I defend myself against all your attacks
and I do it with a smile
I can take your hits
I'm not in denial
I"m not ready to call it quits

eye contact remains
but I get lost, hazel hues
leave me a map to your world

Love Bullet
Mary Holz Jan 2013
When love is a gun separating me from you
I’d squeeze the trigger to make my dreams come true
Like cupid with his arrow, I’d shoot your heart
Just to make you notice me and how we’ve been apart
If I put the muzzle to your face, will you see me now?
It will cure your blindness so you can make a vow
To never forget that I’ve been here all along
As you look down the barrel you’ll know what you did wrong
I’ll switch the safety off, and ask you if you care
If you say yes then I’ll ask why you were never there
This isn’t Russian roulette, love is not a game
So don’t play me, or I’ll have my trigger finger to blame
Mary Holz Sep 2015
I wear my smile like my nail polish, chipped and fading
Sometimes painted on to hide what’s underneath
Or fake and pressed on, to be as perfect as possible
And it hurts like nothing else when it breaks

Bind Me to You
Mary Holz Dec 2012
Bind me to you, I won’t escape
Tear me up and we’ll take shape
I’ll be yours until this gets old
Until, under the pressure, I will fold
Into your arms where I belong
As you try to prove me wrong
Pull me apart and rip me to shreds
Tie me back together with these threads
I’ll make you see that you need me
To be just like you, to be free
Let me show you what I can do
This is me trying to break through

Broken Sidewalk
Mary Holz Jan 2013
Rest in peace to the sidewalks outside
Cracking and crumbling as they collide
They had a good life, supporting us all
But even the strongest foundation can fall
Saying my goodbyes, paying my respects
Going back along the split concrete
Thinking of past memories, dragging my feet
That’s when I tripped, on that same sidewalk
On which I paid tribute exchanging sad talk
I caught myself with my hands, hearing a crack and a twist
Just like the sidewalk that fractured my wrist

Tears Drop
Mary Holz Jan 2013
The rocks hit me hard
blinding me with pain
I had let down my guard
the rocks pelted me like rain
and I let the tears drop

You had thrown sticks and stones
and I just couldn't dodge them
doing worse than breaking my bones
but your chance at noticing was slim
and I had let the tears drop

I had tried so hard to ignore
your harsh words echoing in my head
I held my heart together as it tore
next thing I knew, I was seeing red
and I let the tears drop

Then I felt the strength I yearned
I finally stood up to you
I used the strength I had earned
and threw the rocks back at you
and I wiped away the tears

Angel
Mary Holz Dec 2012
Take my words and thrown them away
Save me from believing that you can hear
Save my breath from what I would say
Just leave me alone to wipe away my tear

You’re not my charity,
I’m not doing this for me
I’m keeping you from your own severity
And if you care, maybe you’ll see

— The End —
